I see CNN is reporting a 5.8 earthquake just hit Central California...
What a year this is turning into

Cheers,
Grumbo

I got to experience it 2nd hand - was in a conference call with attendees south of San Francisco and suddenly hear "we are having an earthquake". The problem with earthquakes is there is no warning - certainly took these people by surprise.

I'm in Southern CA - Seal Beach, Long Beach, area - I didn't feel a thing - (for those that are worried about it being near the Magic next summer)

 Hi All...

Welll I AM in Central Cal.....exactly! Fresno area to be exact. Felt the earthqake....just a little roller as far as I was concerned....no big deal to this California native! Lived thru the "big one" back in the 80's.

Guess it's all a matter of what you gets used to!!! LOL

I live in Sacramento, CA and while I didn't feel anything the family pet went somewhat crazy(dog jumped up, started barking and running in a couple of circles) for about a minute around that time. He does occasionally bark when people come to the door, but he has never done the circle thing before. Maybe he felt something I didn't. :earseek:

Awwww.... so that is why my dog was acting like an idiot all morning... Here in Sacto I didn't feel a thing either...

Wasnt it projected that California was supposed to get a big earthquake by Labor Day, or somewhere around there??

Also, for you Floridians that have online access, on Saturday evening I was watching CNN coverage of the hurricane and it was said that in the Ft. Pierce, Port St. Lucie area, a car went off the intercoastal highway and that emergency crews couldnt go to it because of the bad conditions at the time. The reports were unconfirmed, so was just wondering if that was a true story and if they were able to get to the person/people??

Sherry, it very well might have been true. If conditions are bad enough and the EOC has told people to stay indoors and they don't, they will not respond to 911 calls due to the safety of emergency workers...

Hey Grumbo, I just posted under our 8/20/05 CA to FL thread. All is well here, need to watch the news about Central CA...twas a big one - 6.0. No worries about the port, we live very close and did not feel a thing. Hope this is not a premonition of things to come... Glad FL is getting a break from the hurricanes, now they are the ones who need our support and prayers as they recover and rebuild. Tis' true this has been one heck of a month. Still thinking and praying for Lynda, Mike, David, and family.

Yeah we can ride a tsunami from California to the Panama Canal next year and sail into a hurricane on the other side of the isthmus!! NOT!

Cheers,
Grumbo

It made it up to San Francisco, but was so gentle that if I hadn't been sitting still, I would have missed it. Non-Californians are much more freaked out by earthquakes than the natives.

I'm also in Sacramento and didn't feel a thing. This thread is the first I've heard of the earthquake. Maybe I'll turn on some news. Like many Californians we are pretty easy going about quakes.

I felt it along with my co-workers as it was a fairly stong jolt and roll here in the Central Valley! We are only about 70 miles or so from Parkfield, the epicenter! We were in our main administration bldg. which has concrete walls and you could see the walls move - not a comforting sight  But no damage here and the school didn't even have an earthquake drill!

Had a friends of ours and a cousin that lives
in San Francisco. SOOOOOO glad everyone
is ok.

They said that with Mt St. Helen in Washington
was feeling tremors 1 per minute, maybe it
is connected?

Just glad everyone is ok!!!

Here in Florida, there was a couple on their way
South to a family affair and they did go off the
road and were not found until the next morning.

The only reason they were found when they were,
was because a state patrol officer was out on the
highway (there was curfews set) and saw tire marks
in the grass and the fence knocked down but the
canal is deep and they did not see anything, but
he called it in and sure enough it was very very
sad, they did find the couple, they had lost control
(the weather was so bad) we feel so bad for the
family.

4 hurricanes in approx. a 6 week period, we know
we have had our share!!

I mean it, if it snows here in Florida this winter, I
am really going to start wondering!!!

Everyone stay safe!!!!

The prediction was a 6 point something or larger in the So Calif desert area (i.e. Palm Springs world) before Sept 5th or something like that ... they missed ... today's was a 5.9 or 6.0 depending on who is talkin' and that's nuthin' to Calif ;)

Although it was in central CA, one reporter described the area as "if you are a cow, it's populated .. if you're a human, it's not a populated area." I guess Parkfield CA is in the middle of nowheresville.
