California hit by Earthquake

Dana,

Mt St Helens in WA is having earthquake "swarms" - they started last Thursday. There apparently isn't concern about the volcano blowing it's top again (fortunately).

Yeah we can ride a tsunami from California to the Panama Canal next year and sail into a hurricane on the other side of the isthmus!! NOT!

Cheers,

Grumbo,

If we time it just right, maybe we can bypass the western locks and ride the wave right into Lake Gatun.

Surf's up, Dude!

Here in Florida, Crave the Wave no longer sounds like a good slogan!

We're from Sacramento too...actually Elk Grove...my DH was home all day, didn't feel a thing, I was in Manteca and didn't know anything about it till I was reading the boards. I guess if I listened to the news I might pick up on some of this stuff.

I am native San Franciscan...live in Foster City and work in Redwood City...we felt it here. No biggie though...a little swaying but I actually felt like I was on a cruise! LOL

The news always makes things seem worse then they actually are. There was no damage w/ this quake...or at least that is what I've heard so far. Nothing like the 1989 quake! Having lived here all my life, I think I would be more afraid of a hurricane and having to deal w/ the constant threat every season! The downside to earthquakes is there is no warning but they don't seem to happen as often as hurricanes.

RonnieJo - Born & raised in the city and remember the big one in 89' too. The news always makes a big deal about any quakes in CA. Glad to hear there weren't any problems.

Sacramento here too, Carmichael actually...nothing. Still have the crack in the wall next to my computer from the '89 quake. I keep patching it everytime I paint and it keeps coming back.
Anything built in the last 40 years here really shouldn't have a problem because of the stricter building codes.
Guess that's been the problem in Florida, they waited a long time to tightened the building codes to better survive Hurricanes. CNN did a story on it, anything built before 1930, or after 1980 seemed to fair well because of the construction quaility, or after 1980, due to stricter building code. Just a couple of extra nails can mean the difference between no damage and no roof.

HAHA! I am from Massachusetts, and except for a couple of years after college living in Europe, I have lived here all my life and the thought of being in an earthquake PETRIFIES me. I guess it depends on what side of the country you grew up on :-)

DIZNEYUSA: Was that car off the road in that Ft. Pierce area? I remember hearing the report and was thinking what in the heck are these people out driving for and felt awful that noone could get to them??? That really is such a tragedy...

Actually today they (the USGS) are reporting that the lava dome in the crater has begun to grow. They will be taking more reading today on the growth and sulfer dioxide levels.

I'm thinkin that she is gonna blow her top again...it may not be as big as last time but something is going to happen. They are just hoping that it won't trigger an earthquake or an eruption of another volcanoe like Mt. Hood or Mt. Rainier.
