California Grille

We're going in May 2010, it will just be my parents in their 70s and me and my husband. My parents like to eat early and I would like to be at California Grille around sunset (which is 8:15). Rather than plan on dining with them that night, should my husband and I just plan on drinks and appetizers at the bar instead? Is this even possible without ADRs? Let me know, we've never been to this dining experience but i'd like to do it this trip in some way. Also, do you need to hold this reservation with a credit card?? Thanks for all your advice!

You do need to hold it with a credit card and you can not go up with out an
ADR

You only need to hold the reservation with a CC# if you are going to be eating in the dining room. If you want to eat apps and drink at the bar you don't need a ADR. Just go to the 2nd floor check-in desk and tell them that you want to go up to the bar, which then they will allow you to go on the elevator. Once you are seated at the bar, ask for a app or sushi menu.

yes, You can go out to the observation deck to watch the fireworks.

Just be aware that although you CAN go up to the bar w/o a reservation, they may not LET you up. The bar/lounge area is rather small and fills quickly as fireworks time nears. If there is no room, there is a chance that they won't let you up--for the simple reason that there will be no place for you to sit.

Thanks - we actually do have a "dining" ressie so I think we'll be all set. I just didn't know if it was cool to get up in the middle of your meal to watch fireworks...but i imagine that happens all the time and the kitchen knows how to time meals etc. We'll just make sure our server is aware that we want to catch the show. Thanks!

It does happen all the time--as much as half the restaurant (or more) will be out on the deck. Your server will most likely even ask you if you're going to be doing that.
