OK...we have a 5:40 ADR at California Grill on Sat. Sept. 16. Spectromagic is at 8:00 and we HAVE to see it. Do you think we'll make it? I assume we'll just jump on the monorail. I know we won't get a "good" spot. Any advice on this one?

Also, where should we go immediately afterward to watch WISHES? And do they do WISHES rain or shine?

Wishes goes, rain or shine (except in very high winds).
BTW, this is the perfect place to post this question.

I'll base my answer on the times you provided, but its my SUGGESTION that (if you can't actually MOVE your ADR earlier) you show up to the restaurant and check in 45 minutes to an hour EARLY and see if they won't seat you sooner. That will help.
But here's my estimation (and suggestions) based on the 5:40 ADR as-is:

If you are seated approx. at 5:40, it should take no more than an hour, or so, for dinner.
So you'd be out the door by 7pm.

Some will suggest you walk from CR to MK. It is a shorter distance, but (unless the monorail is unusually delayed) you probably would only save about 5 minutes over just taking the mororail. (And, IMMEDIATELY after a meal you might not feel like taking so much of a "brisk" walk. ;) )

Monorail to MK (its "the long way around the track" from here) should take about 15 minutes.
Add the security check and ticket gates (5-10 minutes) and you're in MK by 7:20-7:30, or so.

Then do this:
Immediately board the WDW Railroad (station is right at the entrance to MK) and exit the train at the first stop (Frontierland Station).
Walk over to the main Frontierland street and look for a spot to stand.
It will be much easier at this later time to find a spot along the parade route BACK in the park like this.

Because the SpectroMagic parade STARTS at the front and moves SLOWLY to the back of MK, there is big difference in "wait time" between the end of the parade (depending on where YOU are standing) and the beginning of Wishes (which can be seen at the SAME TIME throughout the park).

Following example based on an 8pm start of Spectromagic:

If you watch from near the Main Street Train Station at the FRONT of MK:
Parade Starts- 8:00pm
Parade Over- 8:20pm
>>"Between" wait time- 40 minutes
Wishes Starts- 9:00pm
Wishes Over- 9:13pm

If you watch from near the Splash Mountain at the BACK of MK:
Parade Reaches "back section" of Frontierland- 8:25pm
Parade Over- 8:45pm
>>"Between" wait time- 15 minutes
Wishes Starts- 9:00pm
Wishes Over- 9:13pm

The preferred spot to watch Wishes is from Main Street or somewhere around the "Hub" (the circular area right in front of the Castle where the other "Lands" are entered.)
The real "SWEET SPOT" is exactly in front of the ICE CREAM shop.
(Don't stand under the umbrella tables, just NEAR them.)
From this spot, the fireworks appear "centered" over the castle from there (very crowded).
Up Main Street as far as the PAL MICKEY store is great viewing as well.
This is where Wishes is DESIGNED to be fully appreciated.
The Castle's front facade (with added lighting and projections) is actually a part of the show.

NOTE: If you go up toward the train station any FARTHER than the PAL MICKEY store... they DON"T turn off the LIGHTS of Main Street in that area. So you'll be viewing with hundreds of lights still in your line-of-sight.

The next-preferred spot is on the bridge between the Hub and Tomorrowland (on the Hub end, not Tomorrowland.)

"Tinkerbell" also flies from the top of the castle over to just above the "Noodle Station" open-air restaurant at one point early in the show.

The reason to see Wishes at least ONCE from the "sweet spot(s)" is that there are "front" fireworks (fired from the roofs of Fantasyland) that are best viewed from in front of the castle.
There are "rear" fireworks that are aimed to erupt behind (and centered over) the Castle.
So, if you can withstand the CRUSH of people, and don't mind the longer "in-between" wait time after the parade goes by, the Main Street area is tops for viewing "Wishes".

WARNING: No matter how tempting in may seem... Do NOT stand on the sidewalk between the Hub and Frontierland OR on the sidewalk between the Hub and Adventureland... the (nearly INVISIBLE in the dark) trees BLOCK the main fireworks and the sound is ABSENT/MUFFLED here (by design?).

AND in spite of how good the idea may look before the show, unless you KNOW EXACTLY what you're doing, do not attempt to view Wishes from the Noodle Station seating area.
The main fireworks are hidden from MOST of the seats at this restaurant area and they don't kill the lights or pipe in the music.

There are PLENTY of other places to see both SpectroMagic and Wishes.
Many here have their favorites.
MY spot is way back in Frontierland by the "Turkey Leg Stand" (we don't eat the legs, but its a great place to view the parade!) As I stated above, the parade reaches this spot by about 9:25pm.

Then, RIGHT after the parade ends, we jog across the "bridge" to Splash Mountain and take a quick ride ("nobody" is in the queue, most folks are still at the parade route).

Then, after the Splash ride, we walk back to the "bridge" from Frontierland and usually get there just in time to see ALL of "Wishes" from there.
The SOUND is supplied back there, and you can see nearly everything (including Tinkerbell).
The things you MISS back there are the fun/beautiful castle-front effects and the symmetry of being in the "center of the stage" for the fireworks.
But the fireworks are HUGE, regardless, and the BIGGEST ones ("rear" fireworks) are actually sent UP from the back of MK, near BTMRR and Splash.

I would add to that suggestion to go a little early and hope they can seat you then. On occasion at the California Grill, folks can be seated AFTER their ADR times--and in your case that's not good!!
Plus--if you get drinks, an appetizer, dessert etc, a meal can easily last over an hour--ours have always been at least an hour and a half, or longer.

Wow, Robo! I loved your answer, most especially since it clears up something that's been on my mind (even though I'm not the OP :) ) I like watching the parade from Frontierland, also, but last time we got stranded in that black hole of invisible trees you mentioned. So we were wondering if there was time between parade and fireworks to get from Frontierland back to main street. Sounds very do-able. Thanks again!

California Grill begins dinner seating at 5:30pm - if you arrive by 5pm, they'll check you in and you'll probably be one of the first to be seated.

I would also suggest you arrive early or move your ADR up sooner. You seem to be going for the food, since your ADR is not designed for sunset/fireworks viewings from the restaurant. SO if you want to truly enjoy the food and relax you should allow a little more time. Cali Grill is an experience unto itself and is priced accordingly.
As it is, you have plenty of time to eat, but you will be rushing to get set for Spectro.
Also, I may add that you consider allowing for plenty of time travelling to the restaurant on the front end. Disney buses will take you 45 min to 1 hr if you are coming from another resort. Self-parking is right outside, valet costs $6 or so. If you get there too early, you can enjoy shopping and video games elsewhere in the Contermporary.
AND - Don't plan to arrive at the park after Spectro starts with the idea to catch it in Frontierland. Once the parade starts, the railroad is shut down and you can't travel to Frontierland that way. Also, from the entrance you are stuck walking through crowds along Main St. ONLY on the right side of the street, duiring parade times.
Have fun!!!
