California Grill Dress Code

I just ate at California Grill for the first time. I followed the dress code even though I knew it wasn't enforced. I was surprised to see what people were wearing. Is there a point at which patrons will be turned away? Could someone dine in swimwear?

This has been a frequent topic of discussion lately as you can see from the above replies. If you search the forum you can find the other threads. To summarize, I think we've found that at least two "red lines" are hats - they will ask you to take it off - and tank tops on men. I saw a couple of 20-something men receive long-sleeved collared shirts that CG apparently keeps for dress code emergencies to wear over their tanks. Now these young men just put them on, unbuttoned, over their tanks so I'm not sure how much it elevated their appearance but it was something. I'm not going to wade into the waters on whether they should/shouldn't enforce or whether it does/doesn't impact someone else's dining experience. :D

Once, we were in line to check in at Monsieur Paul in EP and the woman checking in in front of us was in cut-off jeans, a white tank top and full-on Viking face paint. She was escorted up the stairs into the dining room. I was also once on the DCL Fantasy and saw a tween in the MDR in a t-shirt and swimsuit bottoms. I really don't know if there is a dress code line left to cross?

People should take some pride in their appearance. I know it's vacation but that's no excuse for wanting to look like a slob or wear swimwear to an upscale dining venue. There's a McDonald's on property if people want to dress down.

I asked our waiter once if they have an 'enchanted grotto' where they seat people who fly in just above the minimum dress. He laughed and said, "Of course not." while nodding his head yes.

It was a gag of course. They seat people to distribute customers evenly to their servers. Filthy jeans guy with his armpit stain teenagers gets put right next to just-about-to-propose guy and his stunningly dressed date.

If finishing class taught me nothing else I at least retained the notion that one aims to be out dressed by one's host, but only just.

My husband was asked to remove his hat (which he meant to do once we hit the lobby and then forgot). We were in jeans and nice (enough) tops. While priced $$$, theme park dining isn’t “fine dining” If folks want real upscale high-end dining with everyone “dressed for dinner,” I’d say anyplace with mouse-head confetti on the table and fireworks views really isn’t it. Good food and good times are good enough for us.

My understanding was that swim suits were the only no go.

Hard to think of a worse use of my time than critiquing what other people are wearing a restaurant

I'm pleased that it's not as strict as I first thought tbh. I have packed a dress but being from the UK i struggle with the hot weather and if its really hot I would like the option to wear cut offs and a nice top. How is the ac there?

The A/C works very well in CA Grill... it was almost chilly in there when we had brunch recently.

I am frustrated that the only no-go line is hats on men, if only because my partner and I always wear them. We're Jewish, but we don't like to wear kippot or other visibly-Jewish headwear when dining at places that aren't Kosher because there's a rule against accidentally inducing other Jews to believe something is by-the-book okay when it's not. We're both fine with simply choosing food that meets our requirements (e.g. not pork or shrimp but not getting fussy over which cut of meat it is or which stocks may have been used in making the sauce), but others may not be. Which means our usual headwear of driving caps paired with nice clothes. Oh well - guess we'll have to figure something out. Their house, their rules and all. It's just frustrating that "men wearing hats" is still seen as the ultimate sign of disrespect when that's not the case across all cultures...even if wearing cut-off jorts to a "nice" restaurant is!

Another week another dress code thread. Its simple, outside Victoria and Alberts there really is no dress code. Doesnt matter if your pro or against a dress code, Disney will enforce what they will enforce and the dress code is pretty much wear what you want with the exception of (most of the time) those listed in the NOT PERMITTED List: Tank tops, swim suits or swim cover ups, hats for gentlemen, cut offs or clothing with rips/tears are not allowed. T-shirts with offensive language/graphics will also not be permitted.
