California fires

I live in Northern California - in a forested mountainous area. We have fire warning every year and have had to evacuate once when I could see the flames comeing through the trees. Its very scarry. Does anyone know how all of these fires are starting? Up here it is usually by lightning - but I didn't think So. Cal. was having lightning right now?

On CNN this morning I saw fires in Chino Hills. :( DH's best friend lives there. Waiting for a reply from them to an e-mail sent.

I have a sister who just moved back east in September after 11 years out in San Diego...she dreads the thought of winters here but after having to evacuate when the fires were really bad in the San Diego area it was too scary for them. The fires came really close to their home and burned the homes behind them. It is devasting to wacth esp whe you have family out there. My thoughts and prayers will definitely remain with everyone out that way:goodvibes

Previous Los Angeles county resident here. I'm praying for those who lost their homes or those who are in the path.

One of the fires looks like it's on a road that's familiar. Going towards Costco across from the 5. I can't remember the name of the road. Very scary stuff. My DH worked in Glendale, so we use to shop down their all the time.

It's definately weird to see snow gently falling out my window and seeing these fires on tv.

Just wanted to share some pics.. we are maybe 20 minutes to the west of the Brea/Corona/Yorba Linda/Anaheim Hills fire..

I was standing on my porch, here is what the sky looked like looking towards the east

The mother of one of my DH's coworkers lives/lived in the mobile home park in Sylmar. This is the second time she has had a mobile home burn to the ground in a Sylmar park. Our house isn't too far away in La Crescenta. We have a soaked down our tile roof and my DH and neighbors are out clearing any dry brush they can find.

Well, I can give a first hand evacuee account for this fire. My parents live in an area of Yorba Linda that is still under mandatory evacuation and we don't know the status of their neighborhood.

My DH, DB & I were all up at their house yesterday to help load up everything & we were evacuated around noon. By the time they evacuated us, the fire was already down in the riverbed below my parents and we had to be diverted to the 91 freeway. As we were driving down the main road to get to the freeway we had flames on the side of us down in the riverbed.

Once the on the 91 we became trapped as the fire hopped the freeway & we were all stuck at various points on the freeway. My mom and I were about 6 cars back from where they stopped everyone & we had flames on boths sides of us at a lot of points in the hour plus we were stuck. The pictures I am posting are from my DH's camera and he was a little farther back from us - the flames up the hill in the shots was basically directly across from where we were stopped. My Dad and DB were the farthest back and were stuck next to a large sound wall - where at points the flames we licking over the top of that wall.

The finally started to turn traffic around to head us the wrong way up our toll road off ramp, only to turn us around to head us back down the other side to the 91 east - where again, the fire was right on the side of us. Due to the 91 now being completely closed, we were forced out to Corona. The only way we had to get back to get back to Orange County was to head down to San Diego to head over to the 5. We finally got my parents, us and their Golden Retriever back to our condo in South Orange County around 7pm last night.

My parents are still here with us and right now we have no idea when they will be lifting the evacuation. If you are inclined to do so, please keep my parents and everyone affected by the fires in your prayers.

I saw a film clip of a man in Yorba Linda who was apparently staying through the night to try to fight off the fire from his home. He had already evacuated and his neighbor's house had burned down but he was standing out there with a hose wetting down trees and trying to catch embers.

I know that he wasn't being smart yet I keep hoping that he was successful.
