Day 6
Today we got up and packed the bags for the first of any times to come. Having then got the car and checked out we headed off towards Carmel. Me doing the usual, ignoring the tour plan from Virgin, I got the wrong turn off in the Presidio and we nearly ended up going North over the Golden Gate Bridge but luckily found a turn off and headed south onto Route 1 as planned. Soon we were heading towards Carmel through the SF suburbs. Within 3 hours or so we had found the Carmel Mission Inn home for the next 3 nights. My first impression was 'great we are right by Route 1' :( . But it wasn't at all bad didn't even notice the traffic passing by. Checked in only to be told we were early and our room wasn't ready which we didn't mind as we knew we were quite early. So we headed over to Crossroads the shopping complex opposite and wandered around before deciding to get a burger for lunch. Then headed back to get our room key. Wow what a room lovely bed and a really large balcony with sun lounger  we had got a good room here as not all had balconies!!
Once the luggage was in the room we headed off in the car to find Carmel town and drove down to the beach as it was cloudy and winding made a note to pop back when it was better so that we could paddle in the Pacific. By now it was getting late in the day so we headed back to the hotel for a swim in the pool. Not feeling very hungry that evening so popped across to Safeway and got bread and cheese to go with the wine and beer.

Day 7
Today started off quite cloudy so we went off towards the factory outlet at Gilroy to find my new suitcase. Soon after arriving as we were quite a way in land the sun came out and we did our shopping as quickly as possible. Mission accomplished as we found the Samsonite store straight away. Carried on and looked around a few of the sports stores before heading back towards Monterey.
Monterey was lovely especially the area around Cannery Row we wandered around the shops and decided on pizza for lunch at a lovely little restaurant right on the main street called Shnarley's Pizzeria and Wine Cellar.

After this we headed down to Pacific Grove and walked out to the small and rocky headland. There was stood for 10 minutes or so watching the sea otter get a shell and the smash it open on his belly with a rock. They are such interesting creatures that I could spend hours watching there antics. Back then to the hotel as tomorrow we were off to 17 Mile Drive.

Day 8
Today we got up and headed to 17 Mile Drive. Paid our entrance fee and started the drive along the winding roads. It started off very overcast but gradually cleared up as we got closer to the golf courses. The first golf course was Spanish Hills right on the edge of the Pacific. At one of the car parks we got out and walked along the path which followed the coast line. One thing I must add is the seaweed stank something awful. Whilst watching the golfers saw several deer wandering through the course grazing as they went.

Some of the houses along the roads were gorgeous and must cost a few millions at least  . Next it was off towards the famous lonesome Pine stopping at several other photograph point along the way before getting the famous lonesome pine obligatory photograph.

After a quick stop headed off to Pebble Beach Golf Course one of the last stops on the drive. Parked up once we found a space ad wandered into the clubhouse to look at the 18th hole from the lounge. Had a wonderful view across the green and then the bay no wonder there was a wedding thee what a marvelous setting. Again it was time for lunch so went to the 'cafeteria' which was in fact a full service restaurant and had the most delicious half chicken whilst DH had a huge burger. After lunch we finished the drive.

We then went back to the beach at Carmel which was by now packed as it was sunny and no parking spaces so drove along the Scenic Route until we found another carpark and beach which was quieter. Time now for our paddle and wow  was the water cold no wonder the surfers have wet suits!!

Then it was time to head back to the hotel and have another swim in the pool to end the day. Off again tomorrow down the coast to Pismo Beach.
