Calculating Recognized Service..

Today, during my performance review, my manager mentioned that she didn't think your previous employment with the company should count towards total time served.

Our HR policy says if an employee leaves and comes back within 12 calendar months, the original date of hire is used to calculate total time of service, even if you were gone 11 months and 3 weeks-- they calculate your time like you never left the company. (Pretty generous if you ask me.)

This originally came up when determing my eligibility for maternity leave. My manager told me I was not eligible. Employees with 2 years of service get 12 weeks paid, so I called HR myself to confirm what I had read. I was orginally hired with the company 9/06 and my position was eliminated (I had no choice) 12/07. I was re-hired 09/08. That means my total time of service hit 2 years the month they re-hired me. When I showed that to her, she was fine and no more issues of my maternity eligibility. (Not to mention, even without it I'd hit 24 months worked by the time I'm due anyway)

However, it's come time to do vacations and I have seniority over three other employees based on my service. At one point, one other employee said since she had been with the company the longest she should get to pick everything (her workstation, etc)... I didn't point out I'd been with the company a lot longer than her because I don't believe time with the company should have anything to do with that.
Then my manager told me I was on the bottom of the list to pick weeks because I was the last hired. I didn't push it because I don't want anything in particular (and would feel pretty selfish getting first pick AND 3 months off, too) but today during my performance review she re-iterated what she thought about people who "quit" shouldn't have their time counted from previously. I reminded her I was basically laid off, I didn't quit, and she dropped it again.

So, anyway.. my little story aside, how do you think recognized service should be calculated? How does your company do it?

It really doesn't matter what I think, or for that matter what your supervisor "thinks." Your company has a policy in place, in writing. Your previous time with the company counts. If that time gives you more time than your coworkers, you should make a stink about your position on the vacation time "totem pole." If you don't do it now, you're setting a precedent for the future, when you may very well care about when you go on vacation.
 
Eh, I know my manager and know thats how she is. It really doesn't bother me, I know all I have to do is call HR. I have all the documentation printed, highlighted, etc. in my drawer (that only I have keys to) so I'm not worried about that.

She can't really make my job any harder (I'm a teller) and I know she wouldn't anyway. As for the vacation thing... it would be a good point if I planned on staying there, but I won't be there for very long after the baby comes and I've been honest with my direct manager about that from day 1. (otherwise I would have made a stink about it, I'm a vacation junkie!)

My story was basically because she thinks so differently than me. And so does the other employee (my previous time doesn't count) but that my company thinks it does.

Thus, asking how other companies handle things like this and what other people thought.
Sorry if I made my story sound like the point of the thread.
