Cakes and Napoleons and F&W, oh my! Planning our Disney wedding!! UPDATED 9/15!!!

Loving all the restaurants you got to and all the photos! Hacienda is so colorful - both the decor and the food. :goodvibes And BOMA. Favorite. We usually go to dinner there, but I'm thinking breakfast will have to get on the to-do-at-Disney-soon list. ;)

Ugh, I know that feeling of panic when you run out of space on a memory card. :( Glad to hear you made it work for the rest of the trip though!

Okay, so I had a lot of catching up to do, having fallen behind around the time of your photo session.

La Hacienda. Wow, that looked like a lot of great food. Somebody posted the recipe for the avocado margarita, and I made it once. It was okay, I hope the real thing at Epcot exceeds my version.

POR/POFQ. I've always really enjoyed POR, I have a soft-spot for it. It's so scenic. I've never stayed at POFQ, but what I've seen just doesn't do it for me. As far as the beignets, I've never had them at POFQ, but I had them at Cafe DuMonde in New Olreans and I think the thing that really made them was the coffee with chickory that they serve with them. So, you have a bite of this sugary confection (which was not crunchy like you described the one at POFQ), and then a sip of bitter coffee, and you keep swinging your taste buds back and forth like that -- delish! :goodvibes

All of that food looked so good.
I love POR. One of my favorite resorts.
Those drinks look so good. I love Long Island Iced Teas.
I have been to Boatwright’s 3 times. The first 2 times were good and the last time I think they gave us the scraps of other people’s plates. I might go back again.
Never stayed at FQ but would like to but POR drags me in.

Boatwrights is one of my all time favorite restaurants..anywhere. I like the atmosphere and the food.

The beignets... I do really like...but I am with you on the powdered sugar. a little goes a long way...and a lot...well...it goes too far for sure!!!

As for the resorts. I am one of the POR/POFQ fans... but I can totally appreciate your review. I am not happy when housekeeping doesn't do their job... and :scratchin now that I think about it... it was when I stayed at POR that we had SERIOUS issues. Like...no housekeeping for days...until we had our hair dryer catch fire. :confused3 So maybe I am not sure why they are my favorite. Must be the grounds and main buildings...

BTW is that a dirty glass?
8162609829_8bf4d997a1_z.jpg

I've never tried Boma for breakfast before. Intriguing. We love it for dinner though. I love how there is such a variety of foods to try there. And if it weren't for the DISboards, I would never have thought of trying it out.

We had a similar memory card situation on our last trip with my dad. He was so excited to go on a vacation that he used up his memory card so fast. We got a much bigger one at DHS in the Camera store. And I have to say, it was a decent price!

I am glad to hear that you liked POR. We have stayed there and enjoyed it, but we never toured all of it. We were in the mansions area and liked the feel there. The decorations at POFQ are a bit too freaky looking for my taste.

Your description of dinner at Boatwrights sounds delish!

Boatwright's sounds good, I've stayed at POR twice now and I haven't eaten there yet! I wish they had breakfast there, maybe a character breakfast would be cute! They should have a Princess and the Frog themed character meal!

Oh my yes... I am suprised they don't take more advantage of the Princess and the Frog at POR/POFQ... I love that film...:cloud9:

Well... it's a live and learn thing... You would have always been curious how you felt about the resort and now you know it's not your thing... (although I don't think that that glass... would have been anybody's thing...)

Boatwright's sounded good though... :goodvibes ... sorry about the beignets... that would have been disappointing to me...

I hope your final day is awesome...:goodvibes

Your meals at Boatwrights look quite tasty... I love jambalaya and cornbread!

It's too bad you didn't love the beginets. I think it's destined that we can't all love every Disney "must have" snack. (Except for the popcorn... is there anyone that isn't in love with Disney popcorn?!)

I'm glad you got to try POFQ even though you determined it wasn't for you. At least it makes the resort list shorter for next time! :goodvibes

Being from Louisiana, I can tell you that my family likes their rice all gooey and sticky. No individual grains of rice...just a big blob. :rotfl: So, the jambalaya looked like how I'd serve it here in North Louisiana. Ahh, beignets....the Louisiana treat covered in tons of powdered sugar. Even though I was born and raised right here in Louisiana, I could live the rest of my life without another beignet and still die a happy woman. I much prefer funnel cakes (easy on the powdered sugar).

Thanks for the honest French Quarter review. We have a one night stay booked there in May and I'm looking forward to it even though I have a distinct feeling that it will feel too much like home.

I have to agree that sticky rice is the way Louisiana peeps like it. Being from NOLA, I can advise that I like dishes like that to look kind of like a hot mess! :rotfl2:

Glad you enjoyed your final dinner! (your dinner picture is not showing up though). Long Islands that do not taste like alcohol have been known to cause me a bit of trouble!

I'm sorry POFQ was not as expected. That would be a big bummer with the AC in the summer!

I will be staying at POR shortly and plan to explore POFQ if I have some time. I plan to give the beignets a try as well. Gotta try them at least once.

Hahaha thanks, I was fixing that picture just as you posted!!

Yes, that would have definitely been a problem then!

You should give them a try for yourself! Everyone has different favorite Disney snacks!

Hmmmm very interesting post for me on so many levels! DH and I were discussing the Port Orleans resorts as a possibility for our next trip so I'm glad to hear your take on so many aspects! (Even if we did change our mind already... Hahaha) glad your dinner was good, but too bad about the beignets, sometimes I hate trying foods that have been really hyped up, just in case I'm disappointed in them. Lol

Hahaha glad to help!! I know lots of people have loved staying there though! Where are you thinking of staying now?

That dinner looks so delicious! Anything with Mac and cheese is a winner in my book.

I enjoyed your impressions of each resort. I feel like I always mix the two of them up in my head so it's nice to hear a comparison of them.

Hahaha same here!!

They were similar, but very different too! It was interesting to visit both!

It was interesting to read your comparisons between POFQ and POR, especially because, like you said, POFQ seems to be the favorite among most people. We haven't stayed there yet, but we have stayed in POR, and that is my favorite WDW resort (so far)!

I wasn't a huge fan of the beignets either - although that could be because I've had the real thing from Cafe du Monde in New Orleans, so I'm a little biased haha.

Ewwwwwwwww at that glass.

I can see why people like POFQ, it is much smaller and anywhere you stay is very close to the main areas. In retrospect though, I wish we had stayed at POR!

Hahaha yeah, I can see that creating a bias!!

The Port Orleans resorts have always landed on the bottom of my favorite resort list, and I feel like your description of the resort and the room quality kind of reinforces my standing. I know there are a ton of loyal POFQ and POR fans here on the DISboards, but I just don't see it. :confused3

Glad that dinner went well, though! Your dish looked very good, especially the Mac and Cheese part. :goodvibes

Yeah, I know there is a resort for everyone, and it was good to give it a shot, but it wasn't a good fit for us!

The mac and cheese was really good!!

This was exactly my impression of the beignets when I tried them. I am already a messy eater by nature, so imagine the trail of powdered sugar I had following me! :rotfl2:

Nice drink choices pre dinner. I am a big sangria fan, so yum! I am so glad to hear you had a wonderful dinner there. I have never eaten there but I am a lot more likely to give it a try now.

I agree that POR, although larger, is more to my appeal compared to FQ. It was the home of my first onsite Disney stay and I will always love that resort.

I honestly can't believe a housekeeper did not change out those glasses. That's just gross.

Hahaha they were not a neat food to eat, by any means!!

I love sangria, we just got a new pitcher, and my first thought was "this will be perfect for sangria!!"

Yeah, I wish we had gone with POR, but, you never know until you try!!

The glasses were pretty gross, I have to say!!

Lovely pictures of POR! My family loves the Port Orleans resorts (although I have never stayed at either one). I appreciate your honest opinion on the resort. Boatwrights looks like a great meal, I love cornbread so I am intrigued by this "best cornbread in the world" lol

POR was a very picturesque resort!!

Hahaha it was very very good, but I wouldn't go into the restaurant expecting some life-changing cornbread experience!!

We finally got to see POR last summer and liked it's theming and decor.

Glad you liked your Boatwrights dinner. Those beef medallions must be the go-to entree since I almost always see those in dining reviews. The crayfish beignet is the only thing that I may be a little scared to try. Those crayfish are scary looking critters...ok, so you don't have an actual crayfish staring back at you but still....

I finally tried the powdered sugar laden beignets a couple years ago at D-land and was surprised at how "yeasty" they were. Not what I expected but good. Sorry that yours were more of a mess than a hit. They need to serve them with a handi-vac.

POR was very nice looking!!

My dish was really good! Hahaha I don't know what a crayfish looks like, maybe it's better I didn't! It wasn't bad!

LOL a handi-vac with each order of beignets! That would be a great idea!

Dinner looks really good! I've heard good things about Boatwrights. But, even though we're staying at POR I didn't make an ADR there. :confused3

I'm sorry that POFQ wasn't your favorite. I loved it there, but mostly for the pathways and small size. Probably doesn't hurt that it was our first mod and we didn't really know what to expect. ;)

I was glad to hear your positive impression of POR! We're excited to try it out!

You really should! It was a nice meal, and it would be really convenient for you guys too!

I did enjoy walking around the resort, the pathways were really cute. POR looks really nice!

I have had the Belgian waffle, too. Soooo good! :thumbsup2

I was just at POR on Wednesday, so I loved seeing those pictures! :goodvibes It was so nice and peaceful there after having left a jam-packed Magic Kingdom. I have stayed at only one moderate - POFQ. I think Caribbean Beach will be my next mod, eventually.

Just a few days back into Real World, and after seeing your pictures, I would be fine with repacking and going back to Disney World tomorrow. :earsgirl:

Mmmm I could go for one of those waffles right now!!

It was really peaceful! Caribbean Beach is fun, I bet the girls will love the beaches and the pool there!!

Hahaha that's how I always feel when reading the Dis!!

HAPPY EASTER!

easter_disney_1.gif

Thank you!!! (Albeit belated) you too!!! :goodvibes

I'm surprised you didn't like POFQ and preferred POR! A lot of people like POFQ much better! I love POR, yes it's big, but it's manageable (at least the mansions section is, I don't know about Alligator Bayou!) and I feel like a lot of the really huge resorts (OKW, CBR) are just way too big to even walk through!

Boatwright's sounds good, I've stayed at POR twice now and I haven't eaten there yet! I wish they had breakfast there, maybe a character breakfast would be cute! They should have a Princess and the Frog themed character meal!

We didn't actually stay at POR, so I'm not sure how seriously my review should be taken of there!! It did seem manageable when we were on the bus around there.

That would be awesome, I bet that would be so popular!!

Great review of Boatrights! I honestly think this is the first time I've EVER read a review from there!

It's nice to hear your impressions of the resorts. I wonder what yall would think of values...

Hahaha it's definitely an under-rated restaurant, we really liked it!

Hey, I'll go into any resort with an open mind!! :thumbsup2

I don't think I've read a review of Boatwrights before reading yours! It sounds really good!

I'm glad that you were honest about the condition of your room at POFQ. It sounds like it could use a little TLC to get back to Disney standards!

It was really good!! Definitely worth a try!

It did need a bit of TLC, I actually think they're redoing the POFQ rooms now, which would be great. If the room was a little more spruced-up, I think I would have had a more positive impression of POFQ.

Yay for Boatwright's...it's one of my favorite restaurants.

I've stayed at POR and POFQ and prefer POR, although the smaller size of POFQ is nice, and it's generally much quieter.

Too bad about the beignets...they do love to pour on the powdered sugar, making them SO messy!

That glass in your room...ewwww. I think I would've said something about it!

We really liked it there too!!

It was nice to have the small size of the resort!

Hahaha the powdered sugar was a bit much, but it did make it fun!

We love La Hacienda and Boma too! They're both great!

Hahaha yeah, that was a bad moment!!

Ugh, I'm insanely far behind on the Dis right now too!!

Wait...YOU MADE THE AVOCADO MARGARITA??? How?? Do you have a recipe???

POR was really scenic, I thought it was so pretty!! The way you had the beignets sounds like a much better experience, it sounds like eating them with something bitter was the way to go!

POR was really pretty-looking!!

Your review of Boatwrights had made me nervous, but we thought it was pretty good!!

Boatwrights is one of my all time favorite restaurants..anywhere. I like the atmosphere and the food.

8162609829_8bf4d997a1_z.jpg

We really liked it there! I'm glad we went!!

Hahaha yes, there is a lot of sugar on those!!

The atmosphere of the main areas of the resorts is really pretty! A hair dryer catching fire definitely is a big issue though!! Yes, it was there when we arrived, we never touched it!

I've never tried Boma for breakfast before. Intriguing. We love it for dinner though. I love how there is such a variety of foods to try there. And if it weren't for the DISboards, I would never have thought of trying it out.

Your description of dinner at Boatwrights sounds delish!

It's a really good breakfast, it's one of our must-do's!

I completely and totally forgot about the camera store in DHS! I'm such a bad Dis-er hahaha!

POR looked really nice! Hahaha yeah the decorations in the dining hall were a bit too much for me too!

Yes, definitely live and learn! I'm glad we did give it a try!

It was really good! Hahaha yes, everyone has their own favorite Disney snack! (Carrot cake cookie, here!)

Yes, I'm glad we gave it a try too!!

Oooh how I love funnel cakes!

I have to agree that sticky rice is the way Louisiana peeps like it. Being from NOLA, I can advise that I like dishes like that to look kind of like a hot mess! :rotfl2:

Thanks for the rice info!! Good to hear that Boatwrights was serving it more of the Louisiana-style!! :thumbsup2

Your review of Boatwrights had made me nervous, but we thought it was pretty good!!

I honestly believe it was because it was the end of the night. The other time we ate there it was really good.

So I'm sure you all have noticed that I am much more absent from the Dis as of late than per usual.

Is wedding planning a totally cliched excuse?

Well I'm using it anyways.

WOW there’s a lot that goes into planning a wedding!!

Anyhoo.

That, combined with work keeping me busy, has led to less and less Dis time over the past few weeks. And you guys are SO GOOD at updating your TR's, well, you make me feel even more like a slacker!

But I will TRY to be here a bit more often than I had (read: I probably won’t be back for around 3 more weeks, with another lame excuse to follow :rolleyes1), because I totally missed you guys while I was devoting my internet-ing time to various wedding sites and Googling things like “more folders for my wedding planning binder”.

(Have I showed you guys my wedding planning binder?)

(I bought this model because it was orange and pretty. And because DF said he would make fun of me for buying a Trapper Keeper. (I would have totally gone retro and gotten a Lisa Frank model because OF COURSE.))

Anyhoo. (Times two.)

Other than wedding planning, I’ve now been doing Disneymoon planning, which, so far, is pretty similar to regular trip planning with the exception being that we have a bunch more activities already on our schedule. (Such as, say, the wedding.)

And so, it was recently time for that day we all await…ADR day! :cheer2:

I dutifully awoke before 6 AM EST (easy to calculate because I already live on eastern standard time), and started clicking away at the Disney site to make our dining reservations.

…and, no dice.

I clicked around some more, and it was quickly evident that either the new system doesn’t ADR rope drop at 6 AM anymore, or there was a site issue.

Wah.

I sat around until 7, tried the site again, which was still having issues, and then around 7:05, called the dining reservations line. Where I waited patiently (I do like that Disney Parks hold music!) for around 25 minutes.

(I should clarify at this point that we are flying down to Disney a few days before the wedding, so while a few of our ADR’s are pre-wedding, most are technically during our honeymoon.)

I spoke with a nice CM who was able to make all but a few of our reservations. (2 restaurants were not accepting ADR’s for no reason that we could ascertain, and California Grill is not accepting ADR’s yet either, but I figured that would be the case)

When we were almost done talking, right as she was about to give me our confirmation numbers, I suddenly realized that I had made ALL of our ADR’s under my name…which will not be my last name as of the wedding. (Yes, I know not to change actual official things like our flight info, but I wanted DF’s (and my to-be) last name to be on the ADR’s, since it will be our honeymoon and all!) I explained the situation, and asked if there was an easy way to switch the name on some of our reservations.

Nope. I’d need to re-do the ones that I needed corrected.

Sigh. :headache:

(And no, making all of the ADR’s under DF’s name from the start would have been far too easy, which is why I didn’t think of it until way after the fact.)

I got the confirmation numbers from her, figuring that at least I had ADR’s, and if I was going to be finicky about how they were reserved exactly (yep), then I could change them.

This was then an ongoing process for several days, as I battled the new Disney website (am I the only one that finds it VERY frustrating?), which would either time out, say there were no reservations available, or not let me make my 180 +10 ADR’s.

And then finally, finally, I was able to update them all*, much to the lack-of-fanfare from DF. (“It’s not really a big deal, so they’re under one name or the other.”)

(He's so frustratingly reasonable sometimes.)

(*except for Crystal Palace, where I was originally able to score an 8:05 AM ADR on a non-EMH morning, so that was not changing to the 8:35 AM, which was the only other time I was able to find several days later.)

Are you sick of hearing about my ADR saga yet?

Now, I know I did the ADR game last time, and a bunch of you are doing it now, but I’m figuring with the rate I’ve been actually updating my TR, any game would probably be dragged out to mid-August by this point, so I may as well tell you now, before I’ve changed my mind for any of our reservations.

(What? You and I both know the high likelihood of that happening. :rolleyes1)

Arrival Day: Dinner at Jiko (ADR not able to be made yet – who knows why.)

Day 1: Breakfast at Kona Café

Dinner at Yachtsman Steakhouse (Again, ADR not able to be made yet – who knows why.)

(This will be our first time there, so no relevant picture here!)

Day 2: Breakfast at Kouzzina

Rehearsal Dinner on the Croquet Lawn at the Boardwalk

(The most relevant picture I have, which doesn't show the space at all.)

Day 3: WEDDING DAY!

Day 4: Farewell breakfast at Fresh (in the Dolphin)

(I don't have a picture from Fresh already in my Flickr, so here's a picture from the Dolphin Fountain, right down the hall from Fresh.)

(Yep, this is a detailed and comprehensive TR right here...)

no dinner plans because I envisioned a giant troupe of us meandering around F&W at Epcot.

(I'd be lying if I said I also wasn't envisioning getting one of these...)

Day 5: Lunch at the Brown Derby (with my parents; DF’s parents; and DF’s sister, brother-in-law, and niece.)

(Haven't been here yet either, so another irrelevant picture..)

Dinner at Flying Fish

(Also our first time to be dining here...)

Day 6: Breakfast at Crystal Palace

Dinner at Boma

Day 7: Breakfast at Boma (I wonder if we should just sleep in the AKL lobby that night)

Dinner at Artist Point

Day 8: Breakfast at Whispering Canyon Café (sleepover at the Wilderness Lodge lobby?)

(First time here too!)

Dinner at California Grill (provided we are actually able to make an ADR!)

Day 9, AKA departure day: Lunch at 50’s Prime Time Cafe

(Haven't been here in long enough not to have a picture!)

Hey MeMom!!! :goodvibes Things here are good - I'm finally trying to get back on a somewhat normal Dis posting frequency!! How's everything by you?

Busy at school. The end of the year bring lots of review for testing and much paperwork. Always happy to see Fridays roll around! :)

Yikes! The ADR system sounds really buggy and difficult. I hope you get to make the rest of the reservations you wanted! As for the ones that you did get, they sound awesome!

Just when I thought it was not possible to hate anything more than I hate the new photobucket, the new Disney "Experience" was released. It was awful, horrendous, and I too ended up having to call for all of my ADRs on our 180 day window. The lady on the line was SOOO cheerful and I was still mostly asleep! :rotfl:
