Cake Bake Shop at the BoardWalk is now open

Theres a good possibility she brought her best, most experienced servers & cooks to Florida from her other locations for those first few influencer invitation only days. And now we’re getting the just trained, get experience on the job staff. Not an excuse, just the only thing that makes sense to me.

This is definitely what happens when restaurateurs open a satellite restaurant. I’m more concerned that the owner didn’t stay on site all day every day for at least the first few months on such a big investment. The investment into this restaurant is likely many many millions and she has no investors, that is a big poker bet to shove into the middle and walk away from.

Thanks for the confirmation. I don’t know anything about the restaurant industry but couldn’t imagine any other reason why the experiences were so different

Makes the decision a bit easier for us. Gave up STK71 and rebooked it. We will stop by if we have time and just get a cake slice.

Can you park at the Boardwalk Resort with your Opentable reservation for The Cake Bake Shop? I booked this reservation before it was doable on the Disney App.

I remember there were reviews in the beginning that people said they got servers they knew from other Disney restaurants. Like the bartender was from Enchanted Roses and the server was from a Disney signature restaurant. I wonder what happened to them.

Appreciate you taking the time to post about your experience, I was worried I was being picky but we both picked up on several similar themes in our respective reviews. We were also in the ‘glass room’ and also had slow service. I half-way wonder if we didn’t have the same server. “Not ready for prime time” was my ultimate conclusion.

It’s a common thing for managers to station servers according to their experience and skill level. The bottom of the pack is often put in the in the lowest traffic area. They want to give those servers at least a few tables to gain experience, but if the rest of the place is already overwhelmed it risks really horrible performance. The server’s not well prepared, the seating is the least intriguing and usually on the outskirt, and if the rest of the staff is in the weeds too there’s nobody available to help save them. The customer ends up getting the worst of everything.

Doesn’t mean they are gone but just not working the shifts when reporting posters were there.

I thought I would share what I was told by the Cake Bake event team as it relates to the Afternoon Tea in case anyone is trying to decide between the Tea and a lunch reservation.

As of now, they are planning to have the Tea guests dine in a separate area from the general lunch reservations. Unfortunately, they are thinking the Tea will be done in one of the outer rooms and not the main dining room. Based on the most recent dining reports, that sounds really disappointing.

The Tea is fully prepaid, which is fine, but it’s a non refundable reservation. They said they may work with you to change the day or the time, but it’s definitely not a guarantee or a promise of a full refund if you cancel 3 days in advance or anything. The contract does not have any language that would refund a cancellation. Traveling from the northeast in the winter and with Covid forcing too many last minute adjustments to our plans in recent years, this policy is really tough for me to want to accept.

When it was announced yesterday, I was very excited to book the Tea, but after the most recent reviews - especially of the outer room and the service - and the lack of a refund for cancelling, at $121/person with tax and tip, I’m no longer sure we will stick with the Tea over a general lunch reservation.

Hope this helps anyone also wrestling with the same decision.

Now that reservations are available on MDE, they are no longer available on Open Table. I wonder if the reservations that were already made through Open Table will still be valid. I should hope so.

Not bookable

Unfortunately, this restaurant is not on the OpenTable reservation network. To see if they take reservations and have availability, please contact the restaurant directly or visit their website for more information.

Today I was able to finally get a mid-December reservation for my party of 6 via MDE. I'm glad that part is done, but recent reviews have me concerned. Hopefully they will work this out and the service and food consistency will be improved soon. We will definitely politely ask (though we understand it will only be a request) to be moved if we get seated in the glass room several have mentioned. One member of our party is in a power wheelchair, so our options may be more limited due to this fact. It may well be a one and done experience for us, but the consensus of the family was to give it a try, so fingers crossed. :)

I have that set too! It was sold at a local grocery GWP.

I don’t have that piece however , rats!
Go to replacements.com and search for Haviland Blue Garland. They make some custom pieces out of the china and the tiered serving tray is one of the handcrafted pieces. They have both a two and a three level serving tray. If you need additional pieces or have broken any, it’s a great place to get stock.

Yes, my grandmother got them at a grocery store, Kroger I believe, when I was a kid. She was older when we were born and figured she wouldn’t be around when we got married, so she got a set for me and one for my sister.

@TigrLvsPooh, sorry you had such a poor experience. Were you, asked if you minded sitting in the bar? We don’t really drink & don’t enjoy bar an atmosphere. So we wouldn’t like sitting in a bar, particularly if there’s no actual servers & the bartender has to wait on you. What if he gets busy with bar orders??

I have been looking forward to this place since it was first announced. We’re at WDW Christmas week & had been planning to try to get a reservation. This is making me rethink it for sure. Maybe I should wait til our trip in May til the kinks are worked out.
No we were not asked. I didn’t even realize right away it was the bar as we were being seated, otherwise I probably would have asked if we had another option. But we’d already waited 20 minutes for a table so we were very hungry and it was hot and humid waiting outside. (Why do they have such a nice seating area indoors for customers to wait and not use it?)

I think it’s easy to see the over the top decor and assume you’re about to have a phenomenal dining experience, but I think if you go into it knowing it’s just a regular cafe you won’t have any special expectations.

Thanks for the detailed review but I have a few questions about how you ended up being seated in the bar vs one of the other normal seating areas? Did you ask to be seated there or ask for another area?

Bartenders don't tend to do much related to food service. Their job is tending bar. I would never expect the full experience in booth in the bar area.

Please don't take this the wrong way but you are in a bar so walk up to the bar and let them know what your booth needs.

Dave
No we did not ask to be seated in the bar or asked if we minded it. I don’t drink so it’s not the atmosphere I’m looking for. As I just said in my previous reply, I didn’t even realize it was the bar until we sat down, or I probably would have asked for a different seat. I 100% agree with what you said about bartender’s serving. We just had no way of knowing this was about to happen.

So even after reading the very poor reviews the last few pages, I went ahead & booked for Christmas Eve. 🤦🏻‍♀️. I’ve been waiting for years to eat here too. I couldn’t let the dream go without a fight. I’ve got close to 6 weeks to watch reviews & make a final decision.

While repeatedly checking Open Table, I had noticed the lack of reservations for parties of 2 was really obvious. And the ones that were available were only for early breakfast or very late dinners…only from 9-10 pm. I was pleasantly surprised to find complete availability at all times for parties of 2 this morning.

I read @snacks review to my husband last night & we discussed the crazy differences in experiences from the first reviews to the ones we’re getting now. And then it dawned on me. Theres a good possibility she brought her best, most experienced servers & cooks to Florida from her other locations for those first few influencer invitation only days. And now we’re getting the just trained, get experience on the job staff. Not an excuse, just the only thing that makes sense to me.
I think you did the right thing in booking Christmas Eve. I've been watching this thread for quite a while so I know how much you've been looking forward to celebrating Christmas Eve at CBR. It's very possible that if you didn't book it you would lose the option, so now you can read reviews as they come in and have the option when it's time. Consider making a back up reservation in case you decide to cancel CBR. It will be a busy night. I hope it works out for you!
