Caffeine Free Diet Soda Available?

It is certainly possible that it was something else, but I get a very specific sugar spike from regular soda and this was exactly like that.

Maybe I need to try it again to make sure....

It is most likely the Acesulfame Potassium, another artificial sweetener in Coke Zero. In animal studies it has been shown to effect insulin secretion. . .so most definitely it might be a YMMV.

DH is an Internist and has not had it mentioned nor has heard anything from his patients, but they may not notice plus most are non complient...

Every diabetic needs to know how he/she reacts to different ingredients. My DH seems to be ok with artificial sweeteners in moderation (he has T2) but he will end up high in the morning if he consumes more than 2 servings the day before. He also has found that he can consume a lot more carbs in the form of fruits and vegetables than he can grains; identical number of net carbs from grains will cause a much greater spike in him than from fruits & vegetables. I always cook him up a spaghetti squash when we as a family eat spaghetti because he can eat so much more of it due to the nature of the carb being better for his blood sugar. You have to learn how your own body reacts. This is very important.

Re: Zero products and blood sugar.

Check the labels---if they use "sugar alcohols" that can affect blood sugar, even though they are not (technically) "sugar".

That's not surprising. The processed flour in most pasta is a much more efficient sugar delivery system than most fruits/vegetables. Have you tried whole wheat flour-based pasta?

Even whole wheat pasta has the same effect on him. I really like the explaination offered by Elaine Gottschall (author of the Specific Carbohydrate Diet not that we follow SCD even though at times I think it would be a huge help for all of us). He does eat more whole grains than highly refined grains but even then he has to watch how much of his overall carb intake is from grains in general. Rice pastas don't seem to have as much of an effect on his blood sugar as even whole wheat pasta though more than root vegetables and squashes so sometimes I wonder if gluten is an issue for him as he does have several cousins and a niece who are gluten intollerant but because he doesn't have obvious gluten issues he's not about to join the rest of us in a gluten free life. Eating in our house is an adventure I tell ya.

Wow! That is really terrible. My pre-diabetic mom drinks Zero products all the time. Are you sure it was the soda and not something else you consumed with it? :scared1:

Aspartame can really mess up blood sugar levels. Until Coke and Pepsi get their act together and start producing Splenda or stevia-infused cola, my DW is limited to diet cola from Costco or Wal-Mart, both of which are sweetened with Splenda.
Oh, how I wish the Minute Maid Pomegranate Lemonade was available in Canada.

Minute Maid Pomegranate Lemonade

Just a warning- if you are not used to the artificial sweeteners, this stuff can do a job on your stomach. I was sick for 2 days after drinking 2 glasses of this lemonade at Tusker House (I didn't know it was artificially sweetened)and I ended up missing my LeCellier ADR the next day. I avoided the lemonade for the rest of the trip and was fine.

Thanks for all the great info, just an FYI Coke Zero does have caffeine so it is off limits to me...

The Cantina in Mexico had caffeine=free Diet Coke before the rehab. Didn't notice after since I have gotten use to getting pink lemonade there.

Due to a stomach issue I can not have drinks with sugar or caffeine, as you can imagine this limits me a lot. Do any of the restaurants have caffeine free diet soda, I am stick of drinking water or de-cafe coffee.

On the bright side, I guess you won't be tempted to try the Beverly soda :scared1: at Club Cool. ;)

Just a word on a the "zero" drinks - I know they're supposed to be 0 calories, so one would assume they have no sugar in them. I beg to differ. I have Type 1 Diabetes so I only drink diet soda. I've tried a zero product twice now and both times it shot my blood sugar levels up just as if I had drunk a regular soda. So be warned!

Wow, this is good to know!! Kind of shocking but testing your sugar says it all!!!

I was checking out menus on another site and noticed that CF Diet Coke was available at Prime Time Cafe at DHS. I don't know if this is still true but I'm hoping so!
