Cabs and smokers

Hi everyone - I'm looking for a few pieces of advice.....

I wonder if its feasible to get cabs out of WDW (I'm staying at Port Orleans Riverside) to any of the restaurants in 192 etc. We have a car but I'm thinking that I may enjoy a beer or (several) two but wonder if cabs are a) easy to come by and b) reasonable or exorbitant in cost.

Anyone care to comment?

Also, I'm a filthy disgusting smoker and wonder what the restaurants etc are like for those of my ilk - do they have smoking areas? Are they all no-smoking?

By the way I am trying to give up but have been known to lapse!!:(

Thanks for any help

Bad news on the smoking front, Trashy - they've just passed some kind of law which forbids smoking in restaurants and even bars, I think.

Taxis are easy to come by, but aren't especially cheap. It cost us approximately $30 each way from our villa in Kissimmee to Epcot (so, a similar journey to the one you propose). That did include the tip. On the way out, we got the equivalent to a private hire and, on the return journey, a yellow cab. The guy from the private hire was a gem, but the yellow cab driver, was, well, less than desirable. And he didn't know the way - we kept having to direct him. Friends visited us from a Disney resort and their driver got lost, too. I'm sure you will be able to pick up a cab from the front of your hotel without any trouble - even if there's not one waiting, bell services will get one for you. I get the feeling, though, that the yellow cabs which service Disney are only used to ferrying people around Disney.

The private hire company we used was called Poinciana Cab Co, tel 407-935-0001. The driver was called Guy and his direct line no was 407-873-1237. We were staying in the Poinciana area, though. I imagine there are similar firms all over Kissimmee.

Anyone got any ideas of cost of cab from CBR to Discovery Cove.....and would we need to book return trip at same time.....

TIA

Hi Eiblis :)

You can take Mears transport from Disney resorts to Sea World (Discovery Cove is literally across the road from it's sister park).

It'll cost around $13.25 per person return - not bad eh?

Just call them up the day before to arrange your pick up.

You cannot smoke freely in WDW parks - there are designated areas for smokers - they introduced this to prevent people smoking in line and whilst waiting close to others for parades etc. - we were close to someone smoking (from UK) whilst waiting for a parade in AK (he seemed aware he wasn't supposed to as he was desperately trying to hide the thing and puff on it discreetly  ......... won't work until they produce a smokeless, odourless variety :teeth: ), and someone went straight over to a CM to complain.

Just to add re cabs, Janice and I got a yellow cab from the Dolphin - it was dropping off and we needed to get to PI in a hurry to meet friends - I have to say I wouldn't want to get in his car again - similar experience to Debbie.

I'm going to harp on a bit now about cabs because I use them frequently when in Orlando as I've always visited as a non-driver.

Checker Cabs, Yellow Cabs and City Cabs (there's another as well but I can't quite remember it at the moment) are all part of the MEARS Group. These are the cabs that will have the (407) 870 -0000 number for Kissimmee/Osceola or the (407) 699-9999 number for Orlando/Orange Co. If you ring these numbers you will be sent any of the above cars come to pick you up - if you specifically want say a "Checker" or "City" cab to pick you up you need to specify when making the booking all of which takes less than a minute. I've never waited more than 5 minutes for a cab to pick me up.

On WDW property, Checker Cabs are however the only ones that can take you through the admission gates without having to pay the car park fee and therefore pass that cost onto you, the passenger. Also if you are staying on property (except at the Swan or Dolphin) when you ask the valet or bell services to call you a cab it will be a Checker that comes to pick you up if there isn't already one just hanging by the hotel, which WDW have given approval of and that is as good as an endorsement as any.

At the Swan and Dolphin if you ask the valet for a cab you will be directed to one of the white town cars that are lined up by the front entrance. These are non-metered white town cars and it would be my impression that they either work for S & D or they pay something to them. The above mentioned cabs that are part of MEARS are not allowed to stand on rank at either the Swan and Dolphin. If you take one of the white town cars cars from the S & D your fare will not be metered so you need to ask them how much before you take the ride. One charged me $16 to AKL and another once charged me $20 so you see it differs. LOL I don't know what it costs in a metered cab as I've never got one from there. But I also got one from the Swan to The Poly (further than the AKL) and that cost me $20 as well so I figured I either got a bargain to the Poly or got stitched up at AKL ;) These town cars are very professionally run but if you do stay at the S & D and want a metered cab from the MEARS group you can call for one from your hotel room or payphone in the lobby and one will come and get you because it is a pre-arranged fare.

I think we may be the friends that Deb is referring to who got lost from our Disney resort by Epcot and yeah he missed the turning and so we kept driving and driving (he was a Checker cab that works mostly I-Drive and WDW) but we were chatting about all of these restaurants so I sort of felt responsible for his lack of concentration but he then realised and turned around and took the money off at the end which we thought was very honest of him. So even though we gave him $30 he was only going to charge us $26 the meter read something like $38 and our hotel had quoted us $45. LOL it was our own fault as when we rang him to take the fare (he'd taken us to Florida Mall a couple of days before and given us his card) he told us then he didn't know where it was and by the time he came to meet us he had asked others too but in the end he used his own cell phone to ring up Deb and ask for directions we thought that was really sweet of him and we would use him again just not to a private villa address ;)

Now what you do need to BEWARE of are what the industry know as "GYPSY" cabs - these drivers cleverly disguise their cars by spraying them yellow and therefore you may immediately think it's a safe cab run by the MEARS group or perhaps you think they are from another reputable company just because they are on Disney property. Please check that these cabs are insured those from reputable companies are insured should anything happen to you whilst you are in the cab and I believe that this information is on display somewhere in the cab. The "GYPSY" cabs tend to hang around Downtown Disney so please also look for the phone number on the side of the cab and check that it is one you recognise before getting in. The drivers I.D should also be on display. Another way to tell is if they have there rates displayed on the window or inside the car.

Town & Country are another taxi company who have the rank at Florida Mall, therefore unless you specifically ask for another cab to come and get you they won't be hanging around so if you don't want to call a cab and are in a hurry you'd have to get in the T&C cab. They are regulated but tend to work with the meter off. You can ask for the meter to be put on but remember if you start sitting in traffic that will mount up but if you sort of know what the fare is supposed to be again you need to get your price before you take the cab. EPCOT to Florida Mall runs around approx $30 to $35

I have taken about 50 odd cabs from WDW or I-Drive areas from the MEARS group mainly and they have always have gotten me to the place I wanna be bar the Villa incident.

Please remember that you do not have to take the first cab offered to you. If you think the driver behind, the one that draws up to the side of you, is the one that's gonna get you there or you feel safer with then take it, doesn't matter what anyone tells (or shouts at) you it's your call.

Shuttles are OK but I just prefer (and don't mind paying) for the freedom of a cab that is a) either already waiting on rank or b) comes to get me when I want it to and if there is more than 4 of you a Cab is often cheaper than 4 fares on a Shuttle. This is just my opinion.

I know I've gone on a lot but I just wanted to give a bit of a perspective on how the Taxi industry in the Orlando area is run.

Thanks Sam - more info than I'd hoped!!

Just question though - does that mean that if I go out for the evening from a Disney hotel (Port Orleans Riverside) that I should ask for a Checker cab on the return journey?

Thanks a lot Sam......and again sorry for hijacking ur thread trashcanman.......

Lots of great info....
will print n take with us.....
many thanks once again :D

By the time you've taken the cab fares into consideration, it would be just as cheap to use Disney busses and eat/drink on site. If you are someone that enjoys a smoke after a meal ( I'm not sure how far down the line the new laws have got yet) you may not want to languish over your meal anyway so it may be a workable option just to have one/two beers with your meal drive back to the hotel and have a couple more drinks at the hotel bar where I think smoking will probably still be OK.

Cabs are usually ok to get at major points like hotels and the major themeparks, but I haven't seen many of them waiting outside restaurants and even fewer trolling the street looking for a pick up. IMHO you'd have to call for one to collect you.

Thanks, Sam - I'm going to print this off for future reference.

Nope Trashy - what's more likely to happen is that the taxi driver that takes you to wherever - if he's any good he may just ask about how your getting back and then give you his card with the main taxi numbers on and his mobile number so you can ring him, should you wish to, from a payphone or I usually ask the restaurant to call me a "yellow" cab. This means they'll ring the 407 699 9999 number but it won't necessary mean you'll get a Checker but that doesn't matter as any cab can take you back on WDW property. Does that make sense ?

It's always handy to have the above number with you and it should only cost a "quarter" to make the call from a payphone it's a very big operation so you'll be asked "name" "how many" "where from" "where to" and then that information goes out to all the cabs who have computers in the front and then one of them will punch back into the computer "yup got it" because they may just be a couple of blocks down from where you are.

Can I just say right here that I am not affiliated in anyway with any taxi driver - I had to say that coz I'm a bit worried I'm sounding like a "taxi nerd" ;) ;)

Hi, we used a cab in April so that we could have a drink at night. We were staying on the 192 and wanted a cab to DTD. The hotel called the cab for us.

The driver said it was a standard fee from the Old Town area into any part of Disney of $17 each way.

They were called County Transportation Taxi and the phone number is 407-396-0003.

We found them very reliable.

That's a superb insight into the cab operations Sam. It does serve to underline that the cab operators are pretty mixed (it is worse in Miami where Spanish is often the first language of most drivers and many speak only a few words of English!), but all those companies which Sam lists have good reputations. Stick with them and you should be OK.

bumping for the great info posted by Sam - for Rick in chat!

hi ,
quick thanks to shirley who told me to request info from sam for cab prices to i-drive homewwod suites area from downtown disney after midnight. hope you can help.
thanks,
rick

LOL the times I've used a taxi from DTD to I-Drive after midnight have been "pretty worse for wear" nights for me so I can't remember what the fares were ;) ;)

But typically during the day from Wonderworks on I-Drive to DTD have cost us around $20 depending on traffic.

Hope that helps

Regarding the smoking side of things, I also have the bad habit and I am planning on taking one of those nicotine plastic inhalers with me. I know it doesn't compare to having the real thing and you look a bit silly but at least it takes the edge away if you "really" need to smoke and are not close to a smoking point. Also stops any arguments, my fiance doesn't smoke at all and I don't think he will appreciate me dragging him for a tour off all the smking areas throughout the whole holiday. :D

..... and Jinxy I'm sure it will help you on the long flights too - I think it's a good idea :)
