I actually called cable last week, told them I would not pay their increase (the year promo was up 29/triple play) and they lowered my bill by over 40./mos so for now I stick....try and get anyone else to do that, OR offer an additional phone line for 15. a month, not happening in my area. So, not much choice here. cable it is. And if we lose channels again for a while, so be it...

I wonder how much scripps is demanding from Time Warner as their contract is set to expire next year.

Personally, I feel bad for cablevision getting the short end of this. In our area, they are great and the other choice we have is time warner who we left because of so many issues.

Folks really need to keep in mind that there are two satellite service providers that provide service to every municipality in the area. Unless you live in a building that is on the register of historic places, or have chosen a home where you have no view of the southwestern sky, you almost surely can switch to DirecTV or Dish Network. Federal law ensures it.

Not where I live. In our buildings you HAVE to use Bright House. They get around the law because other buildings in the same complex can put dishes on their porches. Down here I looked at a lot of apartments that had created barriers to dish use.

There are very specific guidelines for what restrictions can be put in places, and it is very clear that outright prohibitions are not permitted, no matter what.

We switched to satelite about 8 years ago when Cablevision notified customers about an upcoming 12% rate increase. I'm glad we have Dish Network now. We only have our internet through Cablevision/Optimum Unfortunately, there is nothing else around our area where we can get a constant internet connection. DH gets reimbursed through the State (NY) for it b/c it's a must for his job as an IT manager.

We have a rep from Cablevision come every now and then trying to get us to go back to them. I finally told him last time that there is nothing they can do that would get us to switch back to them. Their customer service stinks.

Yes..they can. They can establish restrictions in such a way that it makes it impossible to have them. Believe me, I had a copy of the FCC Regulations and the lease and I tried to find a loophole in what they were doing. There simply isn't one. The lease expressly states that nothing can be on the patios other than patio furniture and plants. I had to fight to be allowed to keep my BIKE out there. The patio is the only place a dish could be placed, because it's the only outdoor area with exclusive access.

The lease EXPRESSLY states that the only things allowed on the private patio are patio furniture and plants. Like I said-I had to argue over keeping the bike out there.

Now, they are likely getting around this because other sections of the same complex have less restrictive lease language. They can say that if you want a dish, you can move to X building. Of course, X building apts are not as well appointed...but that's the choice you make.

Believe what you wish. I'm well-aware of the law, having been on both sides of its implementation. I'm aware that landlords do abuse the situation and make tenants think that the law doesn't prohibit something that the landlord tries to do, and I also am aware that sometimes it just isn't worth taking your landlord to court over an OTARD violation. As you wish. However, folks should understand that the law is on their side, should they wish to pursue action against a landlord such as you've described.

The Dish can be a problem here in the summer because of the rainstorms too.

I've got no real beef with BrightHouse so far. Their HD is much better than Cablevision's was back in NJ, and their customer service is very good.

Yup, here we go again is correct , I just saw this on Cablevision's channel 1999 ... in case anybody's interested, here's Cablevision's side to the story ...

ABC Disney is threatening to pull the plug on WABC unless Cablevision and its customers agree to pay millions of dollars in new fees. Cablevision has asked Disney to continue delivering WABC , but instead Disney is holding Cablevision customers hostage by threatening to pull its programming.

Cablevision already pays Disney more than $200 million per year to carry its channels; now Disney wants a 20 percent fee increase for exactly the same programming.

In these difficult and challenging economic times, it is not fair for ABC to force Cablevision and its customers to pay what amounts to a new TV tax, for the same programming that is available today for free over the air and on the Internet.

It is wrong for ABC to demand $40 million in new fees to help pay the salaries and bonuses for top Disney executives.

Cablevision has tried in good faith to reach a fair agreement with ABC Disney, including top Cablevision executives travelinig to Disney offices in California earlier this month and lengthy face-to-face meetings this week in Bethpage and New York. We have made numerous proposals, all of which have been rejected. We have asked Disney to continue to make its programming available to our customers while we continue to negotiate.

E-mail or call 1-877-NO-TV-TAX and tell ABC not to turn off
WABC-7 while we negotiate a deal that is fair for everyone.

There is little surprise that ABC casts Cablevision as evil, and Cablevision casts ABC as evil. Cablevision really laid it on thick, though. Where's that smiley....

What would be really fair is to negotiate in the negotiation room, rather than in the press. As such, it is doubtful that either side will be pursuing a "fair" resolution.

for my home was losing signal with every rain/thunderstorm and sometimes heavy snows. Couldn't take it after 4 years.

Yeah, they really do need to improve the reliability of the service itself. A lot of folks swear, though, that DirecTV (for example) is better than Comcast (for example), so clearly the rain situation isn't the same for everyone.

DirecTV was WAY better than Cablevision in regard to reception. The few weather outages I had in NJ were nothing compared to the crappy picture I got every day from Cablevision. Their HD was a joke. They boasted of all these channels but half of them were things like MonstersHD that you never heard of. No USA HD, no A&E HD.

The only channel I wish Bright House had is Universal Sports.
