I have had DirecTV in both Florida (summer thunderstorms) and Cleveland (lots of snow) and have had very few cases of signal loss. In Cleveland I have never lost the signal during the winter, so snow has not been an issue. I have lost the signal once for a little while during a severe storm. In Florida I lost the signal a couple of times during severe rain in the summer, but it was for a minute or two each time. We did loose the signal for a while as a hurricane was approaching, but that is understandable.

Where you place the dish along with how centered on the signal you are will effect your signal strength. In neither case did I have the dish anywhere near an overhang. This is important if you have winter weather because it allows snow to pack around the dish. My dish is literally in the middle of my roof surround by nothing. If you are on the edge of the signal you will also be more easily effected by weather.

Mileage will very of course as we have seen here but many times satellite signal issues are correctable with a small azimuth adjustment or better dish placement. They aren't immune though from channel disputes. I only watch 2 sports and one is cycling. Versus is currently not being shown on DirecTV as they battle out putting the channel in a sports package. I don't care either way, I have the sports package to watch the other sport, soccer. Luckily someone shares the races on the internets. Gotta love the provider actually forcing their customer to the torrent sites to see the event they are already paying for and would gladly watch if they would just show it.

Federal regulation explicitly prohibit what you're saying. They cannot "get around the law".

There are very specific guidelines for what restrictions can be put in places, and it is very clear that outright prohibitions are not permitted, no matter what.

At my complex we aren't allowed to have a dish on the patio/roof either. Not even a bike is allowed to be kept on the patio. So that may be a law but it certainly is not followed.

Indeed, it is up to each of us to know our rights, and to fight for them when the issue is important enough. There is a law saying that a product must actually do what it was sold to do -- that the sale of a product implies an non-negotiable warranty of fitness for a particular purpose. What would you do if you purchased a television, first sale/not on "clearance", and you got it home and it didn't work, and when you tried to return it, the store said that they don't take returns?

Both sides are really laying it on thick over the radio yesterday I heard both sides-

"WE pay them 200 million and they want another 40... They want to boost their income to compensate for their dying theme parks and line the pockets of their executives" (yes, wording isn't exact but close)

and

"THEY pay us NOTHING and now we want some compensation" (wording not exact)

Think both sides are exaggerating much (Cablevision is the only cable provider on Long Island aside from Dish/Direct/Verizon Fios)

I can easily find fault in Cablevision's assertion that they pay for WABC-TV already. They pay for Disney Channel and ESPN and SoapNet, not WABC-TV. It is very unusual for a major affiilate to not charge Retransmission Fees these days. Cablevision is definitely in the wrong in that regard. Now whether the price Disney wants for WABC-TV is high or low, it is hard to say without seeing the contract.

If you take them to court over the satellite dish you will win. As with the "not responsible for lost and stolen items" sign at the coat check, a claim doesn't make it so. My old boss had to take her homeowner association to court because they had a deed restriction against dishes.

They are allowed to charge an additional security deposit if you are securing the dish to the building, but they can't restrict their use, even if they say they can.

Precisely, and they can also impose reasonable restrictions, i.e., installation cannot compromise the integrity of siding, masonry or roof (in addition to the statute's limitation to limited-common space, i.e., patios and terraces). That often means you have to put the dish in a flower pot filled with cement, and run the coax through a windowsill. However, that's emminently do-able.

I agree that both sides exaggerate. So glad we have Dish. We were looking at Verizon Fios at one point but the rep we talked to at the mall said it's not available in our area. Verizon has been trying to expand, but Cablevision has been fighting them to make sure they don't. Man, I hate Cablevision . If it wasn't for them, we would have another option for our internet instead of through cable.
