This will be my third DCL cruise and still learning some tricks. I've seen several posts about shopping for newly released cabins (due to cancellations, etc). I am wondering about this "cabin hopping" prior to the cruise date...if you see a cabin open up in another category, can you upgrade based on the rate at the time you booked or is it present day rates? I'm fine with the cabin I have in my category, so I wouldn't be looking for a lateral move, but, curious about the upgrade piece. Also, wondering if same applies at port, what is the upgrade price based on?

Also wondering, if I wanted to add a second cabin, spreading out my party, is there a trick to getting a better rate on the second cabin that what the current price point is?

Yes, if you change room categories on the same cruise, you're locked into the price that room was on the day you made the original booking.

To upgrade at the port, they have a chart showing price differences between categories. That price varies from cruise to cruise. Often it's a significant difference. Sometimes not. But it's a bigger difference than you would have gotten had you upgraded the day before the cruise.

second cabin ... hold out for a guarentee rate after PIF date. might happen, might not

What happens if you want to upgrade after PIF date, for example inside to at GTY ocean view?

As long as it is a GTY and not a OGT you should be able to move it and get the price of the category on the day you booked. If it is OGT that is only new bookings so you would have to cancel your existing reservation and take the penalty which may or may not be economical.

Thank you!

Are you happy with your cabin choice? I don't even know what you have, and I'd be happy, just because we spend most of our time elsewhere on the ship.

Anyway, if you're happy, try to do a port upgrade. It's a roll of the dice, but we have had some unbelievable success in upgrading to a fantastic cabin for what seemed like a song. Then we've been on a cruise where they said they were sold out and had nothing. Be happy with your current choice, then see if the pixie dust gods are working on your port arrival day.

I am happy with our current cabin...just curious about his upgrade thing. And, i'm definitely trying to add two more to our party, which, makes 6, so, need 2 staterooms.

If you want to add more passengers and need a second cabin, you'll have to do that in advance. A port upgrade won't help that situation. The second cabin will be at prevailing rates, even if you move a current passenger into it. Depending how close you are to the sail date, be aware of penalties for canceling 1 passenger from the already-booked stateroom. I would just add the second cabin with the 2 new passengers; then once onboard you can shift who sleeps where.

Enjoy your cruise!
