We've never rented or stayed DVC, and are kicking around the idea for May 2023. I'm wondering if it would be difficult to rent a BWV studio and how soon would we need to do so.

We’re now within the 7-month window for all of May, so any DVC owner can book any resort. That means competition for villas not booked by owners has increased. May is not the most popular time of year for DVC owners, but in 2023 it will become one of the cheaper times to go, in terms of points required each night, and that too will increase desirability and competition to book. IOW, if you want to book, I’d be looking now. I’d budget for Pool/Garden view and consider myself lucky to get Standard view or Boardwalk view.

ETA I intentionally did not check availability for BWV studios in May. Availability changes minute to minute, so it’s useless to check until you’re ready to book.

When less than 7-months out for May, your chances at BWV are typically reduced to getting only a pool/garden view 1BR. Standard view studios typically fill for that time at 11-months out when owners of BWV can begin reserving. Boardwalk view studios usually last longer but those are usually filled long before 7-months out, when owners of other DVC resorts can begin reserving BWV. Pool/garden view studios have a chance of being open at 7 months out but that means reserving at exactly 7-months out from any given arrival date; waiting beyond that usually means little ability to get a studio for more than a day or possibly two.

I was able to get three nights in a 1 BR BWV Standard view to go with our five night Poly Standard view. We don't own either but we often get them early on in the 7 month window. Standard views (cheaper points) are tough to get if you don't book at 11 months.

Get on it asap and good luck!

1BR Standard at BWV is pretty easy to get at 7 months (depending on season). The studio on the other hand is not……

Once you get within 7 months, availability at most WDW DVC resorts becomes limited. Saratoga Springs Resort (SSR), Old Key West (OKW), and Animal Kingdom Villas (AKV) - Kidani generally are available.

You also will have some availability at the Grand Floridian, Poly, and other DVC resorts.

But Beach Club Villas (BCV) and Boardwalk Villas (BWV) generally are full at 7 months because of their close proximity to two theme parks and limited number of Studios.

As @kes601 mentioned, it's often possible to get a one-bedroom standard view at BWV at 7 months, but then that's about double the points per night.
