If the preferred view is not on the boardwalk, what is it a view of?????

I've not stayed there yet, but at the bottom of the point chart it includes this about views:

Boardwalk view includes a view of the boardwalk. Preferred view includes a view of either pool, water, or garden areas.

Here is a graphic that Granny did that will give you an idea:

Preferred View was whatever you got? I guess I'm wrong...Very glad to hear that I can get a Boardwalk View!! It's what I want.

I think the term preferred view primarily distinguishes itself as not being a view of the driveway or parking areas which is the standard view and lower points. We've had some very nice views using standard points, but we do tend to just look over driveways and parking areas to nicer things to focus on.

I always here folks mentioning the long halls in Boardwalk. Does that have something to do with standard vs boardwalk or preferred views or are the long walks everywhere ???

There are long walks (and short walks) for all the views. A popular request is 'close to the elevators.' We don't travel with strollers, so we just look for the stairs.....

Since there is only one area that has elevators, you can be at the far end of the Boardwalk view and have along walk. Some of those red lines are far away from elevators! There are stairs that make a difference for some people, they can exit the building without going to the elevators.

In the graphic above the one set of elevators on the villa side is located near the lobby (there is a slight space between the red and the green in the diagram). So you can see that any room category may have a long hallway walk. There are multiple sets of stairs that can sometimes help. The long hallways are not an issue for us. Virtually every DVC resort has some issues with distance between locations within the resort. Getting around WDW in general requires traversing distances! But for some folks the long hallways seem to be very bothersome. A room request for "near elevators" can't hurt but won't bring any guarantee.

In the beginning there was Standard View (driveway, parking lot) and Preferred View (everything else). Then they split Preferred View into two subcategories: Guaranteed Boardwalk View and Pool/Garden view. If you want a Guaranteed Boardwalk View that is what you need to book.

I just booked at the BW and got a pool/garden view but got charged 286 for a week in May...shouldn't it have been 314 since it's a pool/garden view? I checked the reservation online and saw that....just trying to get some info before calling MS back.

Reservation shows:
2 bedroom garden/pool view
286 points

Yes, according to the point chart 7 nights in a BWV 2BR Preferred View in May should be 314 points, 7 nights in a BWV 2BR Standard View would be 286 points.

I just realized that i'm staying 6 nights (arrive 4/30 - check out 5/6), so 286 points does make sense...sorry for the confusion.

OK, then it does make sense. Your first night is in Magic season (40 pts), then you have two weekend nights in Dream season (72 pts each) then 3 weekday nights in Dream season (34 pts each) for a total of 286 points. It just happens to come out to the same number of points as 7 nights in a Standard View 2BR in Dream season!

That changed about 4 years ago. You specifically book preferred pool/garden view or preferred boardwalk view. Same # of points.

Looks like home is SSR for you. Often times BWV isn't available at seven months - often times it is. I hope its there for you when you call! But call as soon as the window opens. About 60% of the resort is the "pool/garden" view - the remaining 40% is split fairly evenly between BW View and Standard View. So the supply isn't equal to the demand.

We just got back from a stay at BWV. Even though it is our home, we didn't book right at 11 months so by the time we booked, I could only get a preferred view studio and not our normal BWV. We first were offered a room near the "quiet" pool which was about as far away as you could get from the lobby. I asked if another was available that was closer to the lobby as most of our trip was intended to be walks to Epcot for F&W festival events. They got is in 2072. A great room, just off the lobby and overlooking the clown pool. Sort of, we had a view of the Leaping Libations bar. No problem, it was still okay with us. I loved the short walk compared to our normal hike to the boardwalk view.
