2023 Soccer questions thread. With MLS starting soon, the UEFA Champions/Europa League returning next week, and international Senior team matches (USA and Canada included) returning in March, I figured some who may have wanted to learn about the sport more may have questions after the past 2022 World Cup. So if you have any questions on the sport, tournaments, leagues, or teams playing this year, post them here and I’ll try to answer them as best I can. Others who enjoy the sport are welcome to answer questions as well.

The basics:
(Please note as of 2022, teams can now have 5 substitutes during a match)

A common question I get from friends new to the sport is what do the 6 FIFA approved confederations mean. FIFA has 211 international teams that are currently eligible (Russia being the exception). Some countries like Vatican City, have national teams but are not apart of FIFA.
The confederations are as follows:

UEFA (Europe)- the Union of European Football Associations

Concacaf (North/Central America and the Caribbean)- The Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football

OFC (Oceana)- Oceania Football Confederation

CAF (Africa)- Confédération Africaine de Football

AFC (Asia)- The Asian Football Confederation

CONMEBOL (South America)- Confederación Sudamericana de Fútbol

One thing that is unique to soccer is that almost every team on earth has a well known anthem associated with their clubs (vs classic American teams that are only known within the country).
