Buying vs. Renting

Every year I am short 26 points for my trip. Every year I've rented points from people on this board (usually 30, so some years I only have to rent 25 etc..) Anyway - now DVC has Feb UY OKW points for sale. $89 / per point. The cost for 30 is $2300 something and they pay all costs. I would pay $100.36 more per year in maintenance fees.

The math says that it would take about 10 years for this to break even. Why would I lay out the money now when I can keep renting for 10 years? (Don't forget I will also not pay maintenance.)

A closely related question is - - - how long do you think the $10/point figure will last? I know we talk about it going up, but I don't see it happening. In fact, I could easily see renting points for that amount to fellow dis-ers for quite some time since my initial investment has long since been paid back.

jess wonderin'....

will you travel pattern change in the next 20 years - if so wait - if you know that in 2016 you will still need the extra points - I would go buy now.

now if this was only a once every 5 years or so time - then buying more points would be silly. but every year and you have been doing it for how many years?

Another perspective on the issue -

If I were in this position, I'd just borrow (& forget renting every year to stay even). Eventually, I'd have to skip a year (Horrors, LOL) or pay cash for lodging. But IMHO, there's no need to worry now about a potential missed trip several years down the road. If you have 150 points, it's at least 5 - 6 years away.

Anyway, I don't see the need to pay $$ now either to rent or for an add on just because your present pattern is 26 points short. Lots of things might happen between now and the time you can't take a trip.

JMHO. YMMV.

Best wishes -

That's what I keep thinking too. It's only a minor hassle. But I also think the $2300 is relatively small in the big scheme of things...

As tempting as it is to buy these, I believe I will pass.

Thanks for helping me think this out!!

ps - I've already borrowed all my available points. One year we stayed nearly 2 weeks - ah that was loverly!!!! I think one year I will have to pay cash. Horrors! :scared1:

When you have to pay cash for your accommodations, that's the year to buy an AP. You can get discounts on DVC resorts, as well as on the other WDW resorts. One year I got a 1 bedroom for $233 on AP. :goodvibes

I guess I would probably buy the points. If you include the cost of the points plus maintenance fees, you're looking at an average additional charge of approximately $195 per year over the remaining life of the contract. That's pretty small, imo. Given the fact that I would expect the rental cost of points to increase over the next 30+ years, I'd rather pay the $200 per year for ease of mind and the knowledge that I will never be short of points (and hence, potentially deprived of quality vacation time). But that's just my $.02.

:confused3

it's seems like i should because it happens to be bonus time.. so i have a little extra cash....

i dunno. DH and I discussed last night perhaps even staying off site in a house or perhaps even going somewhere else! :scared1:

well, i will simply follow my instincts - i will relax, let go and then something will happen. :wizard:
