After looking around on this board I have decided that our next trip will be done buy renting dvc points. It made me start thinking..."Is there even a reason to buy when you can rent?". Can someone help me answer this question?

There sure is...if you plan on visiting WDW or a DVC resort repeatedly and regularly over years, it will be far cheaper to own than to rent.

But if you can get points at $10 a point or less, you might meet the cost of ownership (dues and original purchase price of the points). Dues are edging up to $6 a point and rental prices haven't moved much in many, many years. You won't get the DVC perks of ownership (discount on annual passes, etc) with renting.

Here are the upcoming dues for 2012.

Year OKW VB(s) VB HH BWV VWL BCV SSR AKV BLT VGC AHV(s) AHV

2012 5.20 5.58 7.12 5.93 5.62 5.61 5.50 4.73 5.44 4.22 4.33 4.48 5.96

Plus if you decide DVC isn't really what you want, you aren't stuck with it.

Deb&Bill have a point. But I would also add that as the dues go up it will become near to impossible to with certainity beable to find points at $10 or less. Also, from my pov rental prices have been slowly going up. There are 2 board sponsors here that rent a heck of alot of points out and they regularly get $12 and $13 pp.

So again, if the long term is in focus - with repeated regular visits I'm confident owning is and will be cheaper than renting.

Since the other posters have covered the cost, I'll mention the control over your own reservation. When renting the the owner has control over your reservation, where as, if you're the owner you have full control over your reservation. This could be very important if you ever have to cancel or reschedule a trip.

Once you find a good rental source, renting can be a better choice depending how often you vacation at WDW.

You don't have to deal with the rule and point chart changes.
You don't have to deal with MS and account issues.
You don't have to worry about banking your points or scheduling a forced vacation because your points will expire.
You can visit WDW every few years so you don't suffer from Disney burn out.
You don't have to deal with buying and selling your contracts.

It appears, based on his signature, that disneynutz, MAY be a source of rental points. IF that is the case, consider it biased...I own at several resorts but only for my own use. Again, in the long term, based on useage, owning will be cheaper.

One other reason to buy over renting is that Disney is looking for ways to shut down the rental market - it is forbidden in the DVC contract - don't think they can but Disney can make it difficult like they are with the resale market

Have I rented out our extra points, sure. Am I biased, no. My post is my honest feelings, renting can make sense for some people and the facts are the facts.

Commercial renting of 20 times or more per year is against the rules. If Disney feels that renting is in direct competition with the Mouse, then they may modify the rules again.

The biggest benefit of owning is that you are in control of your points. Making a reservation involves calling MS and booking it. If your first choice isn't available, you can make all your decisions on the phone right there. Need to move it? You know what your use year is and how possible that is. Need to add a few nights? - you know if you have points. Need to cancel? - you know if its likely you'll be able to rebook. Want to book home at 11 months and at seven see what else is available, not a big deal. At three months want to see if you can switch again - go for it. Want to add the dining plan, switch your ME reservations around, drop the dining plan - a phone call. Don't pay your dues and they cancel your reservation - its your reservation on the line....if you rent and the owner doesn't pay his dues - its your reservation on the line.

With renting, each of these changes involves calling the member you rented points from and seeing if they can and are willing to make the changes for you.

The biggest advantage to renting - you aren't committed.

Exactly! I would not want to buy 8 plane tickets for my family and have it all fall apart. We like being in control, we like being worry free, we like using all of our points!:goodvibes

I was starting to think you had some Bias in your posts.

Renting points will be WAY cheaper than buying if you have to finance your purchase at Disney's 13% interest.

Not true....too long to explain, but you are misinformed, DVC point renting is allowed. Commercial renting is NOT allowed.

Owning gives you 100% control that renting can never match.

So to be clear, I am 100% bias given the circumstances I outlined. Year after year it will be cheaper to own. However, I assumed a cash purchase of the contract. You raise an excellent point with which I agree completely.

I agree with the prior poster that being able to change the reservation is a key consideration. Our first 3 or so reservations were not changed after being booked. I booked early on the first day of the morning when the 11 month window opened so I could get BW view 2 bedroom and put in my location request at that point as well.

Since then I have done a good bit of changing, both resorts and dates. I like being in control, especially since I own where I want to stay 90% of the time, and I absolutely want a particular room view as well.

I did rent points from others twice before purchasing DVC. Once even after we bought in I rented a reservation that was offered for a low price because the original renter could not travel at the last minute and the dates fit our plans perfectly (and allowed us to save a lot of money as opposed to staying at the Swan).

Having rented and being a current owner, I prefer owning, although I admit I still scan the rental board just in case.

We've rented countless times and will continue to rent until DH decides DVC ownership is for us and we can buy resale with cash. I would love the flexibility with ownership and having that control over my own reservation (although, we haven't had any problems with that). Until DH is convinced (I keep booking DVC units in the hopes of a conversion :rolleyes1 ), we will rent.

if you go to wdw pretty much every year, it's starting to look like buying resale > renting > buying direct. but renting is a great option if flexibility is more important than control.

Once you find a good rental source, renting can be a better choice depending how often you vacation at WDW.

this isn't completely accurate. when the sun-thursday stays went up in point cost, the costs went up for renters as well.
