Buying used lenses

There is a guy near me selling the Canon 17-55 2.8IS. I think he's asking $850. That seems high to me but I've never bought pre owned.

What should l be looking for when I see it? Good questions to ask?

It is being sold because he got the 24-75L. Or something, I forget, lol.

I think it's probably worth $850 if its like new.

Check around at reputable places that sell used gear (KEH, Adorama, B&H) to compare prices when you're buying used. You'll often find a better deal than what individuals are selling for.
 
Used Canon lenses usually go for 90% or so of their new value. Which is why I never understood the reason for renting a lens unless its like a 1200mm where the price just isn't affordable and the used market on it may not be the easiest.

That is a fair price for the 17-55mm used.

The 17-55 is known for collecting dust, so you might want to check inside the lens for dust.
