I have read lots of info about buying shares on here, and all seem to mention buying through Halifax. Never having bought shares before I have no idea how to go about it but I wanted to know if they are only available through Halifax or can I use my own bank's share dealing department?

Thanks in advance:)

You can use any bank - but most of us chose Halifax because they do not charge any yearly fees. A lot of us were with another company that suddenly wanted to charge us for holding our shares, but Halifax only charge for your transactions (over seas share charge is £15, but after that there is no charge).
Check with your bank about any fees charges as I think most will add there to your account which can leave a small dent in your pocket!

Just to add that it's very easy through Halifax - I did it all online.

Thanks to both of you for the prompt replies....I am now watching and waiting for the shares to go down....dropped a bit the last few days. Hope it is nothing to do with the tragedy in Japan, wouldn't like to feel I was benefiting from it.

Thanks again
