Buying resale and adding on

 My dh and I are thinking about buying DVC. The problem is that we do not have enough money to buy outright and would have to finance. I was thinking if we bought resale we could start with a small allotment of points just to get started. That way we would not have to finance anything. However, you cannot always find small amounts for sale.
I was wondering......Can you buy small add ons from Disney since you are considered a member even though you do not meet their minimum of 150 points? Will they sell you 25 or 50 more points at a time (if we couldn't find any for resale). That way we could build up our points without the hassle and cost of financing.

TIA for any help,

Heather

Yes, once you are a member -- with any number of points -- Disney will sell you add-ons with a minimum of 25 points, 50 minimum if you want to finance.

If you want to pursue that strategy, I'd recommend you call The Timeshare Store and tell them what you are looking for. Small contracts are often sold before they are advertised.

Also, check the ROFR thread and be sure you offer enough to clear ROFR with a small resale. Disney has been ROFRing small contracts very aggressively in recent months.

While small contracts are sometimes available (and sometimes make it through ROFR) on the resale market, the minimum initial purchase from Disney is 150 points. Disney will sell you contracts as small as 25 points (cash) or 50 points (financed), but those are only sold as add-ons to an existing contract. If your first contract is a small one through resale, then you will be a member and may purchase add-ons through Disney. In fact, you would probably want an add-on with the same use year as your initial purchase, and it may be simpler to match the UY through Disney.

Thank you thank you!! That is exactly what I was hoping to hear.....well, except for the part about Disney using ROFR for the small contracts. Still....it is worth a shot to avoid finance charges.

I just called my guide and bought a Boardwalk contract. It consisted of 3 small contracts. I am glad about this, when I get ready to sell I will have that advantage and the 3 are the same UY but not my first UY. He said It didn't have to be the same UY.

That is very interesting, I thought it had to be the same UY? So why are people on the waitlist for BCV if there are points in other UYs (which I know there are b/c there are some in my Feb. UY as of when I called my guide last week).

They don't have to be the same use year if it is at least another 150 points.
