buying/redeeming SW points?

We leave next week for WDW. We would like to change our returning SW flight to a later time. The original flight was made with reward points. I would like to cancel the original flight and re-book, taking advantage of the 20% pt redemption promo and then I would need to buy some points because the new flight cost a little more. It says on the SW site that it can take up to 72 hours for the purchased pts to post to my account. Does that mean I can't use the pts to re-book till it posts. If I have to wait 72 hrs. most likely the fare is going to go up. Also I'm nervous that if I cancel something could happen before I re-book like fare goes up or worst yet flight becomes sold out......what to do?

We bought points a few months ago and it didn't take 72 hours at all. It was more like an hour before it posted to our accounts. I was prepared to wait the 72 hours too, and was pleasantly surprised when it didn't take anywhere near that long.

Of course there is no for sure how long they will take to post, however I have purchased points in smaller amounts a few times and the points didn't take very long to post at all.

Is it a better idea to purchase the extra points needed to book with points or better to just pay the cash price? Any pros or cons to purchasing the extra points needed? T.I.A.!!
