Buying points from 2005 versus now

I'm discovering that determining the number of points and UY is more difficult than identifying the resort to stay at.
We originally decided on 270 points at the BCV since we go to Disney in March during my childs spring break and that number would give us 1 week in a 1 bedroom. Now the Local school board just changed spring break starting 2007 to April 14th, which is one of three premier weeks requiring 350 points.

I don't really want to spend that much money for 350 points

My guide has us on the waiting list for October/December 2005 but currently has 270 points available now for either March or April 2006

If I understand correctly, buying October 2005 targets the UY as October every year when fresh points come on. He indicated it is unlikely that the October points will arrive before my guaranteed price of $92 per point expires at the end of April.

Here are the two questions:

Since we will most likely go to DW every April at this point for a while (and we just came back from Disney), does it really make that much difference if I buy the October 2005 points or March / April 2006 points. I'd like to get past this decision.

2. If we buy in April at the BVC can we add on points (buy more at the same resort from DVC if they have them) next April to keep it all in the same month? Can it all be part of the same contract? And if we sell in 10 years or so, do we have to have a separate contract for the 270 and a separate contract for the add on or can we bunch all the points together for the sale.

I've been watching the resales and they are going in about a day up to 270 points.

Thanks for your help and where in the world do you get all the logos for each resort?

P.S a lot of owners refer to DH. What is a DH?

that volume of points from DVC direct at BCV will go fast.

Consider the following:
1) you will want your 11 month window to plan vacations and reserve the room you want. (if you always want to stay at BCV)
2) BCV is a hot property and it will go fast...
3) buy the smaller amount and you can always rent the difference or purchase more at a later date.
4) purchase 1/2 the points and visit every other year (more flexability)

Good luck w/ your decision, I just purchased through resale.

You should be aware that those dates in 2006 are Premier season since Easter falls during that time. For 2007, only the first night is Premier Season and the total points needed would be 285 for a 1BR at BCV. Most years, a week at that time would be 270 points. The dates for Premier Season changes each year to accommodate Easter (some years it will be in March) and otherwise those dates will be in Magic season.

If you were to purchase 270 points with a March or April Use Year right now, you could bank those points and have 540 to use for a trip next April (or even 810 by borrowing from the 2008 Use Year).

If you purchase an October Use Year, you could also bank the points from the current (2005) Use Year and would then get another 270 this October- which could be used with the banked points from 2005 for a similar scenario. You should also be aware that DVC can change the points needed for any specific time. If they raise some nights, others must be lowered, but it is within the program to do so. It has happened only once (1996 at OKW) and I don't expect any such change in the foreseeable future, but it could happen.

As already mentioned, if you were offered a contract at BCV, it may not last too long. I'd suggest acting on your decision as soon as possbile as those points tend to go quickly.

Good luck with your decision! :)

Yes, you can add on more points at BCV or anywhere else for that matter provided Disney has points available in your Use Year. You can do that at any time, not just at the start of your Use Year.

If you purchase fewer than 150 points from Disney, they must be in the same Use Year and they become an add-on contract to your master contract. The points can be combined when making reservations, at 11 months out if they are all from the same resort or at 7 months out if you added on at a different resort.

If you decide to sell they are treated as separate contracts: you can sell either the Master or add-on contract if you just want to reduce the number of points you own, or you can sell them both. This is actually an advantage since it gives you the flexibility to sell only some of your points. Contracts cannot be split up and large contracts are harder to sell so it actually works out better for you that the add-on is considered a separate contract. In fact, if you are buying 270 points, you might consider asking Disney to break those into two contracts: a master with 150 points and an add-on of 120 points. Again, if you should ever want to sell some of your points, you would have the option to sell the 150-point contract or the 120-point contract. Or, if you wanted to sell them both, you might sell those two contracts more easily than one 270-point contract.

"Dear", "Darling" or "Disney" Husband. For a list of all the abbreviations used here on the board, look here: http://www.wdwinfo.com/abbreviations.htm

OK all this is making sense and thanks for the link to the abbreviations. I've been wondering about a lot of them. Have a great weekend.

I'd jump on those March points in a heartbeat if I were you.

If they are even still available. I spoke to my guide on Monday and they had just received 1000 points - sounds like most are gone.

I am waiting for Dec UY myself and was told a 6 month wait - I would jump on ANY UY if I was not doing an add on.

Jump fast, there are lots of people like us justing waiting to pounce on particular use years at particular resorts.

I think if you want either of those you better contact your guide right away. Someone else will buy those very quickly, if they are not already sold. Goodluck.

If you really don't want to purchase more points. could you drop a weekend night and stay at another disney resort? Six nights during premier season would be 275 points. You could borrow or rent the 5 points that you are short. That would give you a chance to see how the seasons are going to fall with the kids vacation schedules in the next couple years.

Does Premier Week fall at the same time every year? Or, is it tied to when Easter falls?

In other words, some years Premier week is in April and other years March?

I also work my vacations around school. My son plays football and only has one week off from practice all summer, which is the last week of July. Otherwise I would be going the end of May when school gets out for the summer. I own 300 pts. at BCV with a March use year. I have never had problems booking, but I am curious if anyone knows if Premier Week changes each year? :confused3

I just answered my own question. Premier Season in the Spring is a different week every year that is apparently tied to when Easter falls.

I just checked the point charts. This year Premier Season is April 9-22. In 2007, it is April 1-14. I suspect in years when Easter is in March, the spring Premier Season is going to be in March.

So, if your school break occurs each year around April 14th, some years your points will be higher or lower depending on when the holiday falls.

If you wait a day, and start your vacation April 15, 2007, one week in a BCV one bedroom will only run you 270 points!

Premier Season also falls from Christmas to New Year's. :yay:
