Buying more points... Is Use year really that important?

Well My hubby finally says we can add on to our DVC points so I am researching which resort and use year to land on for us. We already own at BLT with a APR use year. Obviously I see why buying a BLT /APR use year is very helpful but it seems Apr isn't a popular time on the resales. So here are my questions:
  • Should I just buy direct from Disney (we bought BLT 13 years ago direct and are Blue card members already)
  • Will buying a Resale contract negate my benefits in any way?
  • If I buy a different resort all together say, Boardwalk or Poly would it really matter if I have a different use year?
  • Never bought resale so what might be the disadvantage? I know we are grandfathered in with our BLT for incentives and stuff but my resale points would not be allowed to be used with my BLT points in some instances? If so what would that be? Cruises?? (not that its a good use of points, I know!)
  • We are not looking for a large number of points. Say 50-100 points. If we wait for the new POLY can we buy a smaller amount or is there a minimum "buy in" for a new resort. We totally missed the VGF2 notice. Are they all sold?
  • The advantage of Resale is possible banked points. That is not the case if I call my old guide and say I want to buy 75 points at POLY. Right?
  • I'm trying to figure out why people hate or love the Riviera resort. Isn't there some kind of limitation if I bought RIV as a resale? Can I use with my BLT points to book any DVC resort?
Thank you for any advice!!!

If finding april use year at location and amount you want is hard, sure.

As in blue card bennies? Nope. Resale points wouldnt be able to be used at riv though and possibly other new builds( DLT, Poly2, anything else the decide to build)

Not really, it would only matter from a logistics standpoint and if buying direct youd have to buy a whole new membership which means youd have to buy 150.

No your resale points would be good at BLT. Yea cant transfer resale to cruises which is a really bad way to pay for a cruise anyways

No minimum buy in typically as long as you buy same use year and title deed the same so its all under the one membership.

You can get banked points direct as well, just have to buy before the end of the use year. For your with april, if keeping it all the same would mean buying in jan, feb, or march as youd still be in the 2021 use year (cant now since ya know its already april). Youd owe pro rata on the dues from when you bought.

RIV resale can only be used at RIV. Your current BLT direct points are good at any resort now and in the future currently.

Resale points won’t be eligible for use at RIV or any future resorts, no matter what you own already.

Your blue card is tied to the contract you own, so if you ever sell that, you’d lose it

Different UY means a brand new membership. You could not make a single reservation using points from both without a transfer.

I own several contracts across a few different UYs. It can be a bit of a pain if you need to use points from 2 different UYs to make a reservation but you can link separate reservations at the same resort in the same type of room so that they treat them as one when you check in. If you aren't saving a decent bit of money then it's probably not worth it but I've always thought the savings on the UYs I was buying were enough to justify the potential additional hassle later on.

A different UY is like a different person booking. I think this is neat because I get four waitlists. I use one for fall-ish, one for summer-ish.

A small contract in its own UY can be problematic because you can't combine the points. You could have some stray points you can't use.

Thank you all for your replies! I did not know I couldn’t book one reservation with different contracts? I’ll have to research that a bit further. My sister has three different contracts, two SSR direct and one small OKW resale. They all have same use year but are three different contracts and when making reservations she can pick from all three (I’m talking about @ 7 months of course). She is grandfathered in with her resale as she bought it earlier than all the restrictions so wondering if that’s why she can. They are all under her one member number.

I have no real interest in staying at RIV right now but I do know I’ll want to stay at Poly and VGF. Ugh. Decisions. I suppose it’s time to reach out to my guide to see what buying direct would cost!!

Thank you all!!

As long as they are the same use year and same membership they are treated as 1 big pool at 7m. It’s only if you have DIFFERENT use years where they can’t be (easily) combined.

So Could we buy BLT Apr use year (what we currently have) from a resale instead of direct and still have the ability to book reservations at 11 months at BLT. Basically we are buying additional points because our family has expanded with children getting married and having grandkids! We want to be able to book bigger accommodations. I don't necessarily want to buy Direct from Disney if its going to be thousands more but I also don't want to defeat the purpose of why we are buying!

Does anyone know if there are waitlists for buying direct from Disney to add on at BLT? Trying to find out if our old guide is still there! Lol

Sure can! Keep deed the same as the other and the contract will add to your current membership. Can manage and use the contracts together at 11 months at BLT.

I did this for BLT. I had wanted a BLT contract for some time, but could not find a smallish one for my June use year. I found a 25 ptr for Feb at a really good price and jumped on it. Just recently found another 50 ptr for Feb and jumped on that too, so now I have 75 pts for Feb at BLT which works just fine for me.

So you have two different use years Right? Do you have two different memberships? I'm a bit confused as the kind people who responded earlier seemed to say I couldn't buy resale and use (or possibly merge) those points into my membership. I don't want to have two memberships or deeds. I'm tempted to buy a resale at another resort say Poly with an April Use year but Won't that mean I will have to have two different memberships? I'm so confused!! LOL

ONE Membership if keep one UY and each deed recorded the same (names etc). Otherwise it’s multiple memberships managed under one account with different rules on point usage.

If you have a BLT April UY and buy a resale contract April UY at any resort, including another BLT, deeding any new contract the same, they will all be in your current membership number. Your membership will list each contract in it. Hope makes some sense lol.

So basically if someone had a small contract in a an April use year and they had one large contract in a December use year, they could just do a once a year transfer and always have all the points to draw upon at 7 and 11 months?

OK thank you! So what again is the disadvantage of the resale option? If I buy BLT APR from resale and deed exactly the same ill have one account. But will I be able to use the BLT resale points to stay at any resort or will those resale points be limited as in not being able to make reservations at the restricted resorts like RIV.

However, If I buy extra BLT points OR any Resort points directly from Disney (with APR use year) and again Deed it exactly the same then I will have the same rights I currently do which is to book anywhere, correct?? wow this is confusing stuff!

I don't think that is possible because I believe transferred points would retain their use year rules wouldn't they? And there are rules about banked points not being allowed to be transferred I think?? Another area really confusing!! Hopefully the experts will chime in here about this as well!

Disadvantage is those resale points are limited to O14 and not qualified for RIV bookings and any further new resort association. There are things that DVC might offer with only qualified point. The advantage of resale is the price savings.

What is 014?? Thanks! Yes it does come down the price savings doesn't it! lol
