Buying milk for toddler in DLR?

I'm taking DS1 to DLR in Feb, and I was wondering if anyone knows how easy it is to buy milk in the parks. Anyone know where to find it?

He's just turned 1 this month and made the transition from formula to milk, and at the time of our trip he'll still need to be drinking 16-24oz a day. We'll have a fridge in our hotel room and some milk there, but I know that for meals in the parks and probably snacks he will need some milk.

TIA!

Milk is available at all restaurants and counter service food counters scattered throughout the park. I know for a fact you can get milk at the bakery on Main Street.

We always grab a 1/2 gal. at a nearby store or a gas station just before we get to the parks to keep in the fridge at the hotel and then often have the kids have milk with their meal in the restaurants as well. It's pretty expensive to buy it in the single serving containers on site for use back in the hotel but it's easily available if/when you need it from most counter service restaurants. If you're off-site, we've bought it from McDonald's on Harbor as well.

I think it's just 2% in the parks but it's everywhere. What about using a small soft sided cooler and having cups with milk in that? DL will allow you to take that in no problem, you will probably have or get a stroller anyway so you wouldn't have to carry the cooler with you. You would just want to get some bottles or cups that won't spill and remember to take some dishwashing liquid so you can clean the cups after. :)

I don't remember seeing whole milk but I also wasn't looking for it. It seemed like it was exclusively 2% which might be an issue for a 1 y/o.

I'm pretty sure that I read recently that the American Pediatrics Association was now recommending 2% for children because of the rise in obesity. I used whole milk at home for my kids, but anywhere else I just used what was available. I think the point of whole is just to get the extra fat for the young-uns. So a couple days of 2% shouldn't be an issue.

In this case though, my personal preference would be to get an insulated thermos and carry the milk in there. (Buying a half-gallon or so for your hotel room as a PP suggested) That way you can provide it on demand and not have to worry about waste.

You can buy the aseptic packs of milk at the grocery store (kind of like juice boxes) and bring them in as well. They don't spoil at room temp.

Shelf stable milk?? Warm milk?? I know some people love it but not me. I think it's kinda yucky myself. :)

They reccomend whole milk until the age of 2. Under the age of 2 they still reccomend whole milk unless the child is at risk for obesity. That said you are probably right that a few days of 2% wouldn't hurt.

Awesome tips, thanks for the help! :)

I've never paid attention to buying milk in the past, so I wasn't sure how easy it would be to find it in the parks. We will have whole milk in the fridge at our hotel, and we'll be heading back there for afternoon naps, so it's really just a few meals/snacks that we'll need to buy 2% (or whatever is available) in the park.

I have heard of the shelf-stable milk, and I'll buy some of that to keep on hand as well for "emergencies"... in case of a melt-down moment when DS needs his milk NOW and doesn't have the patience for mommy to go buy it. ;)

Sorta on topic: Does anyone know of a good brand of sippy cup that is insulated and spill proof? I'm not having any luck finding decent ones.

I like the Playtex Insulator Cups. :thumbsup2
BUT my son tends to toss his cup overboard when he is finished so we have lost some in the parks. So now we use the First Years brand Take n Toss. They use to make a insulated version of the Take n Toss but I haven't seen them in the stores recently. The Take n Toss ones don't have a valve in the "sippy" part so they will leak if they are turned upside down, where the Playtex don't because they have a valve.
HTH! Have fun! :)

The foogo by thermos is my favorite. If your lo can do straws, the straw cups stay colder and hold more. They also have a regular sippy. They are stainless steel so you don't have to worry about toxins in plastic and insulated very well.

Thank you for the tips! I am going to try both of those out.

Dahlia: is the foogo found in the sippy cup section or with other Thermos items in camping?

I also like the insulated Playtex Cups. We also have some character/brand cups at Walmart that I really like. I don't know the brand but we have Elmo and Minnie. I'll see if I can find a pic...

Here ya go..

I like these because there are no valves, just two parts to wash!

I agree those are great cups, plus you can get Disney characters on them. I like that they don't have the valve so it is much easier to clean them, especially while travelling.

Depends on the store. At my target they are with the adult water bottles which I think was between camping and automotive. I usually find better prices on them online, however.

Correct, DD just turned 2 and we were finally able to get away from whole milk. Yea, I only have to buy one kind of milk now:lmao:

The Horizon Milk Cartons that don't need to be refridgerated were a god send for me and my boys. You can buy them at Starbucks, single serve for about $2 each, but we've bought them from Amazon. Honestly, they don't taste any different imho.
