Ok so I am finally catching up from the dark ages and buying a laptop. I will be using it for home, school and work. I am looking at one with 1.8 GHz processor, 2GB Ram, and 160GB hard drive. It does have Vista (fortunately or unfortunately).

I want to be able to connect to the internet at the library, and home, how does that work? What about connecting through hotspots?

Other then the unit itself, what else should I consider getting, or do I need? Im worried the salesman will try to sell me the store, and I will believe him.

Im a laptop noob, any advice is appreciated...

I just bought a Dell. I bought it on line so there was no salesperson pressure. After a lot of research I decided what I wanted and only ordered what I wanted. On the Dell website go to small business (for some reason the same laptops are less expensive through small business vs. home) and start checking to see what they have that fits your needs. As you start going through the options it will tell you what it comes with and offer different upgrades at various prices. I would recommend that you get the CD/DVD RW and the 9 cell battery vs. the 6 cell one.
