I currently own at AKV and have been thinking about adding on more points, either at AKV, or perhaps adding a 2nd resort such as BLT. What are the advantages to buying through DVC as opposed to using a re-sale site? Are the booking windows the same? There has to be some differences, or advantages to buying direct through DVC, but without reading every post on this site, can anyone tell me what the differences are? Can I use points from a re-seller to book through RCI and the Cruise Line also???

Purchasing direct is quicker, but significantly more expensive. Disney offers financing. (You are on your own if you need financing to purchase via resale). Points that are purchased directly may be used to book options in the Disney Collection (which includes non-DVC Disney resorts at WDW & DL as well as the DCL), the Concierge Collection and the Adventurers' Collection, as well as the World Passport Collection (which includes trades made via RCI)..

Resale purchases take longer, but are usually WAY less expensive than direct purchases. Points acquired through resale may NOT be used to book options in the Disney Collection, Concierge Collection or Adventurers' Collection. They ARE able to be used to book options in the World Passport Collection.

Everything related to use (i.e. booking windows, banking, borrowing, etc.) is the same.

With resale point's you cannot book DCL.

You can still use RCI but in a limited capacity.

....(snip)......You can still use RCI but in a limited capacity.
Please explain further. AFAIK, there is no difference at all between using resale points and direct points for RCI trades.

No, no difference between resale and direct. I only meant that I have heard that the use of trading DVC points into RCI (at all) are a bad use of your points because they somehow limit your choices......in full disclosure I have never tried to do this, just reporting what has been posted on this and other boards.

Sorry if there was any confusion. :)

There are numerous threads on this board about the difference between buying resale and direct. Take some time and read what is already here.

If I had time to read everything on here, I would have done that. I'm looking for short answers to my questions hoping someone can answer them without me having to scroll through every single post on this site.

You're spending thousands of dollars. The difference between resale and direct is one of the most common questions asked here. Many other threads ask exactly the same question. The pros and cons of each don't fit into one sentence. Suggesting you do a search isn't that unreasonable.

The overwhelming conclusion is that buying resale is the best option in most circumstances. You pay much less (maybe 50% off) for almost the same product. But if you don't actually understand all the details then you're likely to be confused or disappointed at some point!

As of March 21, 2011, Members who purchase their Ownership Interest through Disney Vacation Development, Inc. are eligible to book reservations for all Member Getaways collections. Members who purchase on the resale market after this date will not be able to use those vacation points to make reservations for the Concierge or Disney Collections.

paying extra to buy direct gets you the option to pay high point costs for disney hotels like POFQ, disney cruises or fancy resorts like the hotel del coronado in san diego. DVC resale owners can still rent out their pts and pay cash to do those things for much less than a direct trade.

the only cases where resale limits you are when you must go on the member cruise (resale buyers can't even pay cash to get access) or you need access to the disney hotels in california.

all the discounts, perks and general rules of DVC still apply to resale buyers. resale buyers can even trade out of DVC for other timeshares through RCI (like other trades, that is not typically a very good financial deal, however.)

Buying direct through Disney is fast other than if they put you on a wait list and there are no restrictions. I suggest that you call your Guide to find out what's available.

Advantages: SPEED :wizard:
Call DVC, ask them which one of your existing home resorts are there X pts available to add, they tell you (probably AK), you give them a CC#, they add points to your account ready for use immediately. In one hour you'll have points, vacation booked and a smaller bank account (Disadvantage :headache:).

Book windows are the same unless you specifically ask for another UY.

Resale Pts - good for RCI

Short & Sweet enough :) ??

bakerworld and chalee94, THANK YOU!! Those are the short and sweet answers I was looking for. Sure, I could have spent time searching and researching on this site, but those 2 answers were very specific and what I was looking for. Much appreciated!!

Just be aware there are waiting lists to buy some of the classic resorts directly from Disney. People have reported waiting anywhere from a few days to a few months for Disney to find points for them. You shouldn't have this problem for the resorts in active sales (VGF or Aulani) or the resort that just "sold out" (AKV).

Also be aware that a DVC salesperson will likely make you think they're only selling the active resorts. If you want another resort, push for it.

I know you don't have much time to read through things, but there is lots of good information on this board. There could even be info you never thought to ask about. Sometimes it's worth it to take your time and really get to know the product you're about to spend thousands of dollars on.

OP currently owns at AK ....

The answers here just seem to be copied from already published guidelines. Does anyone have any real experience with buying the resale points and using them? Sometimes there are hassles that come up that you won't find in official guidelines. Would be interested to hear from someone that has actually bought the resale points.

I also noticed some replies were just "research the board". That is fine but there are a lot of threads/ replies out there that just aren't very helpful and it is difficult to sift through, if you have specific threads that you think would be helpful, please share them. Thanks.

I'd bet that at least 50% of the posters on this board have at least one resale contract.

When you are spending a lot of money for a future vacation, it behooves you to spend a little time researching. If you have a question about a different post, post your question.

We purchased SSR directly from DVC and purchased VB from resale. As others have stated, resale was much cheaper but it did take almost 2 months from putting in offer, getting thru ROFR, and getting everything closed. (We weren't in any hurry, so that didn't matter to us.) I have no desire to use my points for a cruise (it's cheaper to rent your points out and then use the cash for the cruise anyways....pretty much the same thing for some of those other options as well.) Thus, for us, it was a no-brainer. Haven't had any issues using those "resale" points. Personally, I would have no problems going the resale route again.
