Buying Disney ‘things’ versus renting DVC points

Given the message at the condo meetings about addressing commercial renting, the thought has occurred to me that maybe the first step by DVC is to allow those who just have some extra points to use, to have a way to use them at Disney versus renting them. MMB gave the ability to use them for the Sorcerer pass.

If so, I think it’s a great strategy on the part of DVC. If they make the vast majority of owners happy by eliminating the need to rent to use points at Disney, Disney keeps the dollars in house and opens the way to eliminate the large commercial renters while not upsetting most owners. It also ads to the sales pitch of the flexibility of points to new potential owners.

What would you like to buy with points?

I would like to buy a planning service for my visits that sets up my park reservations, lightning lane pre selects, dining reservations, and airport transfers.

I am happy with the option to use my points for AP and I just have a feeling we may see the trades for things like cruises become a better value, especially since MMB eliminates the $95 fee, and they are allowing additional transfers for exchanges as well as allowing reservation points to be transferred.

It certainly would be wonderful to use them for other Disney things. But, remember, all trades remove rooms from inventory and gives them to DVC to rent to pay for the trades.

So, that’s a balance they will have to figure out.

In theory it sounds like a good idea.

I don't have the stats but of those that are commercially renting I would gather most of those points are resale. If that is the case that would eliminate them from being used to buy things as Disney generally only allows the trades to open on direct/grandfathered points.

I would like to be able to trade points in for either of the dinning plan. Assuming the points trade in is reasonable.

Points for wicked wind down would be interesting as well

That doesn’t mean Disney couldn’t allow resale points to be used in the future.
