Hello...again. First of all I want to say thank you to those that have taken the time to respond to my various questions. I am proud to say that my wife and I will be buying a contract here in the next few weeks and we are excited that we finally have narrowed it down. We have decided to buy a 100 point contract to start out with and then add on with a resale later. We will be buying direct to get the benefits/perks and, again, purchase a resale contract at a later time. My question is, for those that have purchased directly from Disney, is it better to buy into the DVC program while AT Disney or has anyone purchased points over the phone? We will be going to Disney in December and we can wait to purchase our points then (if Poly is still available), but we are ready to buy in the next few weeks too. If buying while at Disney is the better option, we will definitely wait until December. Thanks again for your help!

If you're set on buying retail first, I see no reason to wait. Why not see if you can get THAT trip on the points and look at it as a discount. I will point out that it's better and safer to buy the resale first that way you'll know they'll be combined if you get the same UY and title listings. The deal should be the same either way. You might get some fast passes or similar doing the tour but that's about it. There used to be differences buying on DCL but I understand that's no longer the case.

I'd also start with the resale first because it's much easier to match up a direct purchase and be certain it's just an add on vs doing direct then resale. And once you are an owner you can do direct add on's as small as 25 points or any increment above that. 35, 40 etc, etc or even 99 points if you wished to.

But when buying direct the prices are the same whether bought onsite or over the phone. And Poly will be available for at least another year - probably two.

The one reason to wait would be if you have never toured Poly DVC. Definitely go see the studios and bungalow in person before buying.

Buying from home direct gives you more time to rescind after the pixie dust has settled. You have 10 days from signing the contract and it being returned to Disney.

Do you for sure want to buy only at the Poly?

We ended up buying a small (70pt) Poly contract direct a few months after meeting with a guide at Disney (and also losing a contract to ROFR right before the resale benefits change). I called, told him what we wanted, paid via credit card, and was able to get into my account just a few days later. We then just had to return some paper work by mail. It was all very easy.

There appears to be no benefit of buying onsite. As others mention, you get a few fast passes, but they didn't even work at some of the rides (e.g. 7 dwarfs mine train). Oh, and we got some free coffee, cookies and stickers while there. Hardly worth waiting for!

2. I like being at Saratoga and seeing it, but I REALLY liked seeing the model rooms to understand what I was going to like or not like by staying at GF or Poly or Aulani. That was nice. (If you want to see any of the pics I took, let me know).
3. They are supposed to be remodeling the models and rumor was it might be a surprise coppers creek remodel. That might be nice to see.
4. The other benefit was not having to go find a notary and then dealing with the paperwork (although we ended up doing a by mail also in a redo).

I liked the in house one better.

Some were. But I had 3-4 different people for the legal side of things there too to look at the document. Like I said I had to do both in person and then a rewrite a few days later at home and it was nice not having to find a notary and mail while in the office.

Your own legal people or DVD's, if their's it's still basically the sales team and as such it makes it suspect.

They had theirs, and I had my wife (she's an attorney). But, I also came home and had it run by my friend who's a property attorney and he statement was simple: Disney is not going to do anything that will jeopardize their DVC reputation in a shady way with that. It was all pretty simple and fair.

They're going to walk a fine line but it's not necessarily the legal aspects that I was referencing as much as the rest of the story. With anything, esp timeshares, there's the rules, what we think the rules are and what the rules actually are in practice. Anyone making a decision based on the representations of the company alone, no matter how thorough or well intentioned, is only getting part of the story and in reality, a relatively small part. And, IMO, not enough information to make an informed decision. Plus, no matter what they tell you there or how accurate it is at that moment, almost all of it can be changed on short notice unilaterally by DVCMC/DVD.

We put our direct phone sale on our credit card and did not need any of the subsequent paperwork notarized. I assumed it may have been a result of the smaller size of our transaction, but this would be another logical reason...

You can buy a direct sale on a credit card, but not a resale.

If you're set on buying direct, buy now and tell the agent you want to use your points towards your December trip. They'll ensure you get a room.

It seems that some of the guides are pushing this idea that Disney "considering" banning resale buyers from booking outside their home resort, and other things like that, so I would also be hesitant to believe everything that Disney tells you during a sales pitch. I also get the sense that guides may overstate how easy it is to book at 7 months outside your home resort. It's good in your case though since you have people who are familiar with the law, but not everyone is as lucky.

I don't know what people get over the phone, but we got a tote bag, a $50 gift card and for buying the day we toured (we had already planned to do so- not an impulse buy) we got 2015's points as a bonus. We also got water, snacks, fast passes, a ride to our ADR- that sort of little thing. And DD got to play at Lilo's while we toured, which she loved.

None of that (except the points) is enough to make the decision if there's value for you in buying over the phone, but there were some nice little touches, plus we preferred meeting our guide in person.

We bought over the phone in 2008. Never ever did the tour. Very easy and like Dean said, our guide booked our next trip for us using bonus developer points. We've since added on via resale.
