Any tips?

DD(4) wants an ipad and the osmo games to go with it. I'm not buying a 4 year old a brand new ipad, but i have seen a lot of refurbished ones on ebay for $150 or so. Have any of you ever purchased one from ebay? Any tips to make sure I'm getting a good product?

I sell my old Apple products on eBay a lot. I'd make sure you buy from a seller with a lot of positive feedback, and examine the photos and the text closely. When I sell phones, there's specific wording: "clean", which means the phone wasn't stolen and was properly removed from iCloud etc. There may be similar wording for iPads. But overall I think you're fine, although you may even want to check Amazon instead--they definitely have sellers who sell refurb Apple products.

I personally would not buy an iPad on ebay. Have you checked out any of the legitimate used Apple product resellers, like Gazelle or the Apple Store? We bought our DS11 a used iPhone on Gazelle, and we've sold multiple items back to them.

I've never heard of gazelle. I'll check them out.

I bought an original iPad on eBay when the second version came out and I still use it every day (yup, it still works for what I need it for at work). The seller even threw in a free Otter Box case for it. I don't use the case any more because I leave the iPad at work and didn't like the clunkyness of the case when there are no transport concerns (it just sits on my desk all day) but I was very appreciative. I am soo happy I made that purchase all of those years ago. Definitely check out the reputation of the seller and read the description very, very carefully!

Just curious if the people being somewhat alarmist about eBay have actually been ripped off in some way? I would think PayPal and choosing a well-established buyer would provide sufficient protection.

I used to be a seller on ebay. I no longer am.
I'd only buy things using a cc, going thru the Paypal link.
Only from an established seller with 99 percent or higher feedback.
One that lists their specific return/refund policy and
uses the included Tracking with their shipped items.
Good luck!
