Buying a suit

So DH has decided that he needs a new suit for the cruise we are taking after our Orlando stay -
He should be able to buy off the rack - he is pretty average size 5"8 and 32 (maybe 34) waist - not after anything high end - its not likely to be worn much, but everyman needs a suit (funerals, court, cruising)

We have limited time for shopping (1 day) and want to hit Premium outlet mall would he be able to get something there or would he be better off buying before we go.

I always worry about hemming the pants (even though I have very rarely taken up a pair in THIS family!). If you do end up deciding to get the suit overseas, make sure that you pack some hemming tape/web - then it will only take 2 minutes to get them to the right length. :)

By the way, I hope that hubs spends much more time wearing his suit on cruises than in court or at funerals! ;)

The height is about right....but the waist :sad2:.

DH has a 32 waist and he mostly has trouble finding this waist size. Plus he's vertically challenged so most of the times we never find the right pants length either. Having said that, it is possible to find the 32 waist....but 34 is much easier to snag.

I would take the chance that he will end up getting something in the US rather than buying in Oz....even if you end up at the mall in Macy's or similar. With his height, he'll be fine.

what busy busy said... Take some hemming tape for the length, but you should be fine at either the outlet mall or a regular mall that has several department stores.

In April we bought my DS a CK suit from MAcys. It worked well as we could buy seperates (shorter legs and longer arms meant different sizes) It cost us under $100. (including shirt and tie!)

Thanks AME - thats the answer I was looking for - was it on sale?

We were considering hiring one from the cruiseline $100, send in your measurements and it turns up in your closet - but figure we may as well spend $100 to buy it instead - although this doesnt solve the problem of carrying it on our multi leg trip. :confused3

Its funny how whenever we have a function, I will go and buy a new dress - that I will be lucky to wear more than a couple of times, but when it comes to DH- "that suit you have had for 5 years is fine! " :rotfl:

I have bought more clothes for this trip than I probably should have - but I cant take the chance that I will find anything over there. I just cant be that unorganised.

yup, it was on sale (with a coupon in a not so glam area of LA). But then with the constant discounting that the US retailers seem to have, you should be able to get a good price. THe availability wasn't an issue, just working out the right size to fit my son. I agree, I'd rather have it and keep it. The suits didn't take up much room in the suitcases.

edited to add ... we brought the suits rolled in the suitcases. DH ironed them the night before the formal night. We took them home in the clothes space bags after being dry cleaned on the ship (super cheap dry cleaning) and hung them up the day we got home. They still look great and they'd wear them again without further pressing.

IKWYM with outfits, my DH has one non-work tie that he's had for about 8 years and wears it with the same suit and shirt. My DSs all have one tie each (and suits as needed), but my DD has four evening dresses and when we cruise DD & I both wear a different dress for dinner each night :rotfl:

We hired our bridal party suits, and my brother bought his from Carolyn Allens, they were amazing to deal with, and we were able to order it all from home by emailing them our measurements ahead of time.

Then when we got to Orlando the suits were pretty much all ready, they came to our hotel room so the suits could be tried on for any alterations that may have been needed and then dropped off the following day once any changes were made.

My brother loves his suit, and looks quite dashing it in, and compared to Australian prices naturally it worked out perfect for us. (Especially considering that once we got there we were unable to find any suits in any of the shops :confused3)

I can post photos of them if you like :goodvibes I'm always willing to post photos of my wedding :lmao:

Actually, it was a tux... He paid $400 for pants, jacket and vest, however it wasn't your standard tux - something to do with the collar...

The bridal party was more of a standard peak lapel suit, but I added vests to make them more dressy. We only rented them, but they were definitely cheaper.

Actually, mum has just reminded me that we bought dad's suit too, but we called Carolyn Allens the day before they were bringing the suits over to try on to also get one for him, so they're pretty good at last minute things - at least for the father of the bride anyway

From memory Carolyn Allens (it's a company, not a person) was a stockist of Jim's Formalwear so if you google that you should see what they've got on offer, and even email Carolyn Allens and they should be happy to give you prices. They were great to deal with.

If you've got time on your side this wouldn't be a bad option so you've got a price comparison if you decide to buy straight from a store.

*giggle* any chance to show off my wedding photos....

I'm still lurking on your Happy Ever After TR. Your pictures are gorgeous and whilst Misty (?) the photographer is very good, you and DH are a beautiful couple! It probably made it very easy to take the shots.

POR looked great as the backdrop. :thumbsup2

My DH bought a Hugo Boss suit at Premium Outlets a couple of trips ago. He paid $400 for it. At the time we couldn't get anything here under $2000 which we weren't willing to pay. They did alter it in store and we picked it up the following day. He is hoping to get one this trip also.

ooh I hope we can get a deal like that! Do you remember what store -

We only have one day for shopping, I dont know whether to go to Premium outlet mall or Florida Mall - DD and I may go another day when the boys go to Blizzard Beach, but DH really needs to be there for suit shopping.

Oh and Bec, I was lurking on your wedding TR - but am still waiting for you to finish it!! :rotfl:

I know I know, I will finish it one day... hopefully before the 1 year anniversary any way... :lmao:

We looked for dad's suit at I think the premium outlet mall, but couldn't find anything suitable, that's why we ended up calling Carolyn Allens, they were coming over with the rentals anyway, so it wasn't difficult to get dad's measurements to them and get an additional suit sent over.
