Buy SSR or Wait for AKV?

I am driving myself crazy trying to figure out what resort to buy into. Right now the SSR 86pp is great but I keep hearing good and bad reviews about it. I just don't want to buy in at a so-so resort.

I don't know if I should wait a few month and buy in to AKV. I'm sure it will be expensive to get in there. I just wish we has some prices. You know?

Any suggestions for me from SSR owners?

As far as reviews go, I think the most important factor to look at is the source of the review. I know for the first 1-2 years that SSR was open, the reviews appeared to be mostly poor. I think the biggest reason for that was that SSR owners--at least those who had actually stayed at their Home resort--were far outnumbered by non-SSR owners. And those non-SSR owners bought into DVC because they were inspired to spend $15,000+ to invest in ANOTHER resort. We're talking about people who already had fondness and loyalty to other DVC resorts like OKW or BWV--in many cases those feelings stretch back more than 10 years.

In short, it's no surprise that someone who has spent dozens of nights at another property would have lukewarm feelings toward ANY other resort.

If you look at more recent trip reports and reviews, you'll find that SSR is attracting quite a fan base. Even many long-time owners who disliked SSR "on paper" have since experienced it first-hand and changed their outlook.

SSR will never have a better pool than BCV, the location of BWV or the low points of OKW, but I would never label it a so-so resort.

Personally I think SSR has the most attractive in-room furnishings of all DVC resorts. It has the best spa / health club by a long shot. It is the only DVC resort with a golf course clubhouse on property. You can walk to Downtown Disney in as little a 5 minutes from some rooms. And even when you factor in other aspects that are not unique to SSR (pool facilities, dining, Community Hall, etc.), SSR's amenities stand up well in direct comparison to other resorts.

Many people will tell you "buy where you want to stay." Personally, I think a better mantra is "don't buy where you don't want to stay." Picking a single favorite is a near impossibility for many. Still, I think it would be a mistake to select a Home resort at which you have no intention of staying. Your Home resort is your fallback position--it's the place you can book 11 months out and be guaranteed a room while you arrange vacation time, flights, and so on. And there's nothing wrong with trying to switch resorts later in the game.

As for AKV, I guess that depends on how excited you are over that particular resort. Personally, I think the points will cost at least $10 more than the current SSR price and with the savannah operating costs, the dues will certainly be higher. I also think that AKV will be fairly easy for non-owners to book at 7 months. AKV will be larger than the BoardWalk Villas, and BW is pretty easy to book during the vast majority of the year.

Tough call, but I think it goes without saying that this is a situation where waiting will definitely not yield you a lower price--it's a question of whether you feel the product is worth paying a higher price.

You already got some great advice. I'll add that you'd be hard-pressed to find a bad trip resort of SSR in the past 6 months. The response of most people is "Wow - I did not expect it to be so nice and beautiful". You may hear the same handful of posters chime in about what crap SSR is - but once you've been around awhile, you learn to ignore their inflamatory remarks.

That said, SSR does not have powerful themeing - and I think this is the source of people's less-than-rabid SSR fan base. I think it is also intentional. It is elegant and has great attention-to-detail, but the theme of the resort is something like "health, relaxation and recreation". Because of that, you get the best fitness facility on property, the best spa, there will be two feature pools, exceptional quiet pools, lots of walking trails (my favorite thing about SSR) - BUT you also don't get "blown away" with the theme the way you do at the other, more heavily themes DVCs (AKV will likely have the heaviest themeing).

The understated theme makes SSR an ideal home for us - because the strong themes of the other resorts are more polarizing in our family.

I liked SSR when we stayed there. I found it to be beautiful and very peaceful. One thing that we like is now that our kids are older the proximity to Downtown Disney is great. My kids love to go there (as do us) so for them to be able to walk over there in the evenings is a plus for us.
We've stayed at Boardwalk too and that was great too. Loved being near Epcot and MGM and the Boardwalk, but that's a busier place so if that's the tone of the vacation you want then it's a good place to stay.
I thnk buying into SSR isn't a bad thing. You get the longer term and of course the F&F discount. I honestly can't see that people are ever going to be completely locked out of other resorts as long as you plan wisely if you are going at a busy time and want a more popluar resort (like BC Villas in July). We are very happy with our SSR purchse and know we will be for a long time!
Best Wishes!

I own at SSR and have gone on several trips since our initial purchase, and have managed to stay in all of the properties at WDW except OKW(hoping next year). And honestly all properties have some type of draw back...and to me that's fine...a resort cannot be all things to all people(we all want different things out of our vacation). SSR is beautiful, and if you like DTD...I would stay there in a heartbeat.

Now back to your question. Is AKV going to be the place you really want to stay?(Is AKL your first choice of accomodations now?) If it is then you need a contract at AKV... the 7th month window gets to be a bigger issue as time goes on---This is esp. true for the Grand Villas--you need to have the 11th month window for major holidays if you need that size unit and go at any time in the peak seasons(near any school holiday). If you do not need a GV/do not vacation at peak holiday times/and you like AKV- but you would be happy at SSR too, then buy at SSR now. The other option you have is to buy a smaller contract at SSR now(so you can start vacationing with DVC) and then do like 2(50) point add ons for AKV later.

What ever you decide...good luck. :wizard:

Actually AKV will be one of the larger DVC resorts. It's slated to be around 450 rooms.

These numbers should be pretty close to correct:

HHI: 81
VWL: 136
VB: 172
BCV: 208
BWV: 383
AKV: 450
OKW: 531
SSR: 828

We just got back from SSR and loved it. Loved it so much we are seriously considering buying.

We stayed in a 2br(only way with 2 boys) in Congress Park. Bus service was great. DH loved the gym, too cold to try the pool. We're big walkers so the distance to the front didn't bother us and we liked it was close to DTD. We were there 11/19-11/24.

Just a warning...

As soon as VAKL opens it will become the "hated" resort. It's the trend of the DIS boards (which does not reflect America in general) When BCV opened it was "too small" "ugly" etc. Pretty much the mood on the board was that BCV was the worst DVC resort ever...of course as soon as SSR opened, BCV was removed from that spot and SSR became the "worst DVC resort ever" and in due time it will be replace by VAKL. (NOTE: BCV seems to command amoung the higher prices on resale which pretty much proves that the DIS does not reflect the overall viewpoints!)

WHY? I think some of this is insecurity. Folks want to prove that "I made the right choice in buying XYZ" and the way they think to do this is to trash the other resorts. (Think kids in the schoolyard!) IMHO the DVC boards have to be approached with caution. There tends to be a large "the sky is falling" population here (ie. ANY change is BAD LOL!)

I agree with the buy where you want to stay which is why I am trying to decide what to do on AKL. I know I want to stay there. Of course I also want to stay everyplace else I own points and I don't need any more points so something has to give LOL!

Wow. No wonder it was hard to get a summer reservation at HHI! I had no idea it is so small!!

You, know, this can be a bit like choosing a good wine. What tastes good to you is far more important than any rating system. Stay at Saratoga Springs and stay at Animal Kingdom Lodge (admittedly in a hotel room at this point) and see which setting you like better. Saratoga Springs is car friendly and Animal Kingdom Lodge likely will not be. That would be a big factor to me (and would cause me to buy Old Key West at resale rather than buying either Saratoga Springs or Animal kingdom). Animal Kingdom lodge is lush while Saratoga springs is a bit austere. Animal Kingdom is in the middle of nowhere while Saratogaa springs (at least part of it) has a buzz.......but I might think a wine is great that you think tasetes awful. Trust your gut.

If it makes you feel any better, we just bought SSR after much debate. In fact, I posted a similar question just a few weeks ago. We sent in our paperwork two weeks ago and are official DVC owners.

I too struggled with SSR now or wait for AKV. We will absolutely want to stay at AKV sometimes. It will be amazing, but we finally decided that SSR felt right. The decor is our style. We would never be disappointed to stay there. Besides, we just couldn't beat the price.

I received some mixed comments regarding the importance of the 7 vs 11 month window. Generally, what I heard was that most owners who called right at 7 months did not have an issue. Don't know if this helps at all, but I thought I would share.

I bought SSR in the last two months and booked a 2 BR for 6 nights at the BCV the week before 2007 memorial day weekend at the 7 month window with no problem. SSR seem a good deal and you can always add on at AKV if that seems better whenever it comes available. I may never stay at SSR but it is currently the best deal and the "bird in the hand.." axiom comes to mind. Hope this helps!

Good luck on your decision, hope to Welcome you Home soon.

Thanks everyone, Its funny I am staying at both of them in like a month so I can see which I like better. 4night SSR and 3nights AKL. I really didn't even think about it until right now that I will get the chance. It just so happened that those were the resorts that had rooms:thumbsup2
