Buy in Small, Add-on Large??

i don't see any advantage to what you are proposing...:confused3

I certainly do; the OP can use minimal cash outlay to join DVC (perhaps renting additional points through member-to-member transfer for that big once a year trip, thus maintaining control of her reservations) and keep maintenance costs very low. As funds permit she can add on in any amount she wishes and bank/borrow rather than going in the hole for a 160-point contract right off the bat. The small contracts will stay very saleable in the future (much more so than 160 points).

i understood the original question to be framed in terms of "savings."

there are advantages to buying a series of smaller contracts - i'm starting small myself - but if you intend to buy 160 pts, it will always cost more to buy a series of smaller contracts...it's cheaper to just buy a 160 pt contract resale.

Buy a little conservative on what you can afford. You can never have enough points. Buy in can be a big chunk of change and maint fees have to be in your budget. I bought a small 50pt to start. I'll add-on 50 to 75 points at a time at a different resort for booking priority. Use 7 mo window off peak times and bank and borrow to get a peak time (not peak, but at Christmas) when you want every few years. Three 75 pt contracts at three resorts can be advantageous.

I can see two advantages to buying small first, then doing a larger add-on later.

1) By already being a member, you can break up the larger "add-on" into multiple small contracts. This way in the future if you want or need to sell some of your points, or hand them down to your children, you have more flexability.
.

well then thats not adding on large, is it? thats adding on small multiple times.

theres no set answer or benefit either way, its dependent on the current incentives through Disney, whats available resale, where you are looking to buy into

generally the price per point is much cheaper via resale especially at a non AKV/SSr resort. so the more you get resale the more you are potentially saving. additionally once a member its much easier to get the samaller contracts direct through Disney

thats my opinion anyway

well thats an answer to a completely different question

if you are looking to get in for the cheapest option then a small contract via resale is the way to go

but not if you are looking at buying a small contract first via resale then a large contract direct from Disney versus buying the large contract first through resale then small from Disney.

No it's not. The OP asked:

"I am in the early stages of contemplating a DVC purchase, and am wondering if their would be a benefit to buying in through a small 25-50 pt re-sale purchase, and then adding on through Disney.
Would their be any savings in the later add-on purchase through Disney that would not available if I already owned a small interest, or would it be better if I purchased a full 160 pt contract through Disney up front
?"

Add-on "large" was an idea put forth in this thread by other people. The OP never said anything about adding on large, just how to get started and add on later. As others have pointed out, 25- or 50-point add-ons through DVC have distinct advantages.

Ok, in terms of purchasing, it is cheaper to buy small with no closing costs. But what about on the resale end of those small contracts? The closing costs are high in relation to those small contracts. It seems a wash to me. At least with some larger contract's (100-200), there's only one closing cost fee. So yes, I do agree with you.

sorry to disappoint you, but you actually should re read the title of the thread

Ah, you did not *disappoint* me, more like touched a nerve because one of the very annoying things about the Dis (among all the good things) is the way people love to swoop in to critique posters that they deem not sufficiently on topic.

You got me with the thread title, however; I wasn't paying attention there.
