I am considering the S. Maarten Butterfly Farm, how is it. ? I also want to do a catamaran / snorkel trip. Any recommendations or ones to stay away from?

Do the Butterfly farm on your own, not thru DCL. You can go to the tourist info booth just off the dock and pick up a discount coupon for admission. ANy cab can take you, and the driver will give you a discussion of the island while he drives. The butterflies are most active in the morning.

The advantage of not going with the DCL group is that the place will be much less crowded and you can stay as long as you'd like. It's a great place for kids.

Do not go near Orient Beach with kids (unless you are planning an anatomy lesson).

We did the tour through DCL. I liked the excursion, but wished we could have more time at the farm, and less time in the ship's lounge waiting for everyone to gather.

We were at Orient beach last week and did not find it as bad as I was lead to expect. There were only a few topless women and one or two nudes. My 7 yr old did not even notice.

(see my DCL vs RCCL thread for more info on Orient beach)

We enjoyed the Butterfly farm and agree with the "go on your own" idea. Cab fare should be around $6 pp. If I recall correctly, all cab fares are set by the govt's and are on a pp basis.

Hope this helps.
