Businesses Being Open on Holidays

cepmom-At least you close early! Also, since I am not a closer (meaning I don't have to stay until the end) I will get to leave when it "dies" down.

I work all weekend, so we'll see how it goes. I will probably be really dead the whole thing! I worked black Friday and you think it would have been busy (lunch was steady) but it was bad! One of the worst days ever! Everyone must have been tired of eating!

thanks....you know the worst part of working tomorrow? I am scheduled from 5:00 - 8:00. Seriously? 3 hours? Ther store will be pretty quiet...I don't get why they want me to come in at 5:00. It's not a huge deal since we didn't have any concrete plans anyway, but it makes no sense to me to come in at 5:00 for only 3 hours.

No kidding! That is prime dinner and fireworks prep time! At least you still make the same amount per hour. Do you get any holiday pay or anything?
I also talked to a coworker...we have no reservations for tomorrow. To put that in perspective, on an anticipated "dead" weekend night, we usually have approx. 300 reservations. And, you know the pittances a server makes per hour as far as minus tips!

I really think it stinks for everyone who has to work, because it's basically to please other people. They are enjoying time with their family and keeping me away from enjoying time with my family. We never go out to eat on holidays; actually I didn't know people actually did that It's a family tradition to cook up a big meal and enjoy family time alone. I think if anyone has off and it's a national holiday, everyone should have off. But that's my personal opinion. Then again I'm also a promoter of businesses being closed on Sunday and praise Hobby Lobby and Chik fil a for still holding to it. I'm working on the 4th, but I will not go to any businesses before or after work.

Our K-Mart has a pharmacy, and they're the place I usually use. So I'm glad they're open most holidays.

Not everyone has family to spend the day with, so it's nice that there are still places where they can go to do a little shopping, grab a bite to eat, etc..

I was actually hoping to go out shopping this afternoon and grab some dinner out. DH just called a few minutes ago to tell me that we are now having a BBQ at our house and his parents and his sister and her kids are coming over Oh well, I didn't have the heart to tell him that I really don't feel like having company

Well, it has been pouring buckets here since 3 am; I'm sure that a LOT of people will be eating out in this city of 2.5 million, because they are not going to be doing any grilling today.

Try to open a grill in this rain and it will be full of water in under 3 minutes.

So far today I've spoken to someone at TMobile to make some changes to my account and bought some ice cream from the ice cream truck. I'm heading out to Wegmans to get some cupcake mix. My DH is working at Toys R Us today, and he said they're moderately busy. Later, we'll probably hit a diner for a late dinner after the fireworks.

It is raining here, so that might make a family that was going to bbq go out for dinner, but if you're having people over, my thoughts are that they'd still be coming over! Last night was pretty quiet, as the days before and after the holidays usually are.

I can't even begin to count the holidays I worked over the years ---- it was pervasive. Hell, I even got shot one Thanksgiving. After I retired from the Army though, I didn't work on holidays anymore. Count your blessings. I'm sure our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan are having a relaxing 4th.

You seriously didn't know people ate out on the 4th? Really?

Honestly, I think if it's that important to you not to work holidays, there are probably some better careers for you. Most of the women in my family were some sort of health care workers (nurse, pharmacy tech in the hospital, cafeteria worker, nurse's aide), so they worked many, many holidays. So when I started out working retail, it was no big shock or burden to work on a holiday.

Maybe you should get your education degree. Teachers have all holidays off. Then again, so do bankers & tellers!

I'll gladly work a holiday if I could just get a job in my field or up to my educational level!

My DH works in the IT industry.. which as some know it is 24/365. He worked Christmas, New Years, Memorial Day this year. He is off today which is one of his regular days off -- so he gets floating "holiday" hours.

Mushy-- I hear you about education.. I got so sick of it of trying to find a position, I wound up looking for government employment and FOUND a position.

I wouldn't be surprised to see people dining out if they knew the place was open. I'm at a loss this year of knowing what is & isn't open. A lot of stores are open until say 4 or 6 pm but then I just ran to CVS & only knew it was open because there were cars there. No signs so I'm assuming it is regular business hours. Some retail places around here closed early yesterday, so I'm not sure if they are also taking today off or what.

A LONG time ago, I worked at a Colonial that was open the 4th...we were dead during the fireworks but there was most definitely a rush for ice cream afterwards.

I guess it all depends on where you are located. Seems a lot of towns aren't doing fireworks this year (at least that is what I read in the paper) or are combining with other towns.

We didn't do anything today and aren't doing anything tonight either. It's one reason I'm here. The kids will be going to bed soon as we don't have anywhere to go to see fireworks & they don't really care about them as they get to see them all the time.

I'm sorry you have to work and that it will be a very slow night -- makes for a long shift.

Many years ago my grandmother fell ill on Christmas Eve & had to have her gallbladder removed. I'm glad their were drs & nurses working on Christmas Eve.

My DH use to work at a gas station & holidays were desired by all the employees because they were paid time & a half.

I'm also glad that most restaurants are open on Sundays as I like not having to cook lunch on Sundays. When I worked in restaurants in college I never had a problem getting Sundays or at the least Sunday mornings off so I could attend church.

I actually had to buy something at Babies R Us this week and made sure to work around Canada Day. It never occured to me even check that it might be open, nevermind open after 5!

I remember getting to leave work early on Christmas Eve one time. I headed on the highway for the 2 hour drive to my parents house and was shocked to see all the rest stop food court stops wrapped in big vinyl signs announcing they were closed . No lunch for me. Given the nature of the business I honestly expected them to be open on Christmas nevermid the day before.

I was just there this morning

I actually had today off and wanted to put my 10% off coupon to use for some stuff I didn't get off my registry. I'm not off from work again until later in the week so today was the best day to get it out of the way.

I do understand the frustration though! I work for Home Depot and we're open on every holiday except Christmas and Thanksgiving day. I got lucky and was given the day off but I'm usually stuck working most other holidays.

I am SO glad most places are open on Sundays because there are a lot of us out there that just view Sunday as any other day...but my complaint is that nearly all places open late and close early on Sundays, so it sucks having to deal with shortened hours.

Growing up in the 1950's/early 60's the only things that were open besides esential services like hospitals were some local drug stores & restaurants. Everyone survived not being able to shop 24/7. Yes people say its nice to shop on a holiday they have off but its not nice when half a family has to work & the other doesnt. Just imagine if your law firm, garage, or what ever business you work for said they were going to stay open all holidays for the convenience of their possible clients & to make a buck. Would the people saying its great to have places open to shop then feel the same way? Oh they wouldnt have to worry about shopping since theyd be working. For my part I never shop on holidays except for a item from a drug store & restaurants (my dad remembered some fancier ones open in the 40s).

As an update for the evening, it was busier than expected. I made about half of what I would have made on a normal Sat. night. The rain helped a lot.
