Has anyone done this via their shuttle bus? Is it worth it or is it better to hire a car for a couple of days to travel there?

I used this last year and it was straightforward enough, got picked up outside Seaworld and it picked us up outside the entrance point of BG early evening. If you're staying on International Drive it picks up at various points along there and I'm sure it's free if you have the 5 park flexiticket. I wouldn't bother renting a car just to go to BG, if you're not getting one anyway then the shuttle bus is fine.

Yep - we've used the shuttle bus, it picked us up from I-drive and was free with the 5 park flexi ticket that we had and only 5 dollars without the pass. We did drive once before but the sign posts aren't that great and we got lost as we got closer, also it was nice to relax and snooze on the way home after such an active day. Definately recommend the shuttle bus.

The main problem we found using the shuttle was, we wanted to leave after a couple of hours (it was very quiet and we'd done everything), but had to wait another 5/6 hours to be picked up.
