First Time DCL cruiser here. My question is regarding the bunk bed set up. I will be sleeping on the couch, but am hoping I can see the "stars" above while lying in bed. If the bunk above me is not in use, do they fold it up so the galaxy can be seen?? Thanks for any assistance :cloud9::cloud9:

If you mean that you will be sleeping under the fold down bunk bed, then, no, you won't be able to see the star portion of the ceiling that is visible when the bunk bed is opened. The bunk bed would be in the way. You could lean your head out to the side or see it in from other parts of the room but, no, you can't lay back on the couch bed and gaze at the Disney stars. The stars only fill the space that was previously occupied by the bunk bed before it was pulled down.

If you don't have someone sleeping in the bunk above you, you could ask your cabin steward if it's possible to have it open yet folded up. I don't know if there is a safety issue with that, but physically the whole apparatus swings down 90 degrees from the ceiling towards the cabin wall, and then the bed frame and mattress swing down 90 degrees again - towards the interior of the cabin. Maybe it's possible to leave that frame and mattress in the upright position? Again, don't know for sure if they would stay or be at risk of falling.

I'm pretty sure that it's not possible. The top bunk bed doesn't swing 90 degrees down from the wall, it's in a compartment in the ceiling, meaning the stars are behind the mattress in the ceiling. You can ask the steward to put down the bunk and sleep on the top bunk, but you won't be able to see the stars from the bottom bunk with the top bunk put away.

How the bed opens: First the cover swings down (hinged on the wall side)

Then the bed folds out of the cover

I don't know that the bed is fastened into the cover in any way. Once the cover has been opened, they MIGHT be able to leave it flat against the wall, but I think it could just fall out due to the motion of the ship.

Certainly wouldn't hurt to ask. Just be prepared that the answer may be "no".

I just want to make sure that you know that the "stars" don't light up. You will not be able to see them when it is dark.

Thanks everyone for all the good info and details. At 6'1", I am certainly not top bunk material.
Too bad they are not lit up either!! :worried: :worried:
oh well ...

Vinyl is not an adhesive. It's like a window cling. As I mentioned above, it will remove easily.
That that particular item suggested to be used has this in the description "just peel and stick". That sounds like an adhesive to me.

It says it will not harm surfaces and you can just peel it off, and in the q and a section it says they are re-usable and don't damage the wall. If you're not familiar with the concept of vinyl, I'm not sure what to say to convince you. I assure you I am not suggesting anyone apply adhesive stickers to their stateroom.

I am familiar with the concept of vinyl. I'm just pointing out that that particular phrase makes it sound like an adhesive (of some type) is present. Now, it may be minimal, but DCL does say "any" adhesive is not permitted.

This is so silly, I don't mean to argue with you, but let me just assure you that it doesn't have minimal adhesive, it has no adhesive. No residue, easily removable.... It won't damage any surface. Probably this whole thing is irrelevant as the OP is unlikely to take vinyl glow in the dark stars and put them up, but you never know!

The description for that amazon link even uses the word sticker more than once. Vinyl can come with a sticky backing. I use it all the time. Those are a handmade item and from what I can tell is that they are using a sheet of sticky vinyl and cutting the shapes with a Silhouette or Cricket type machine.
