Bulkhead Seating

I usually take cash and really-valuables out of my suitcase and leave them in my pockets as I go through security. To expound on that idea, I like the idea of a mini-bag on a lanyard that goes under my shirt.

IOn TED flights the bin above row 1 is reserved for row 1 passengers; same with United 757's for row 8 and half of row 9 (the half on the left). FAs usually guard these bins carefully to keep space free for us..

OT: Since FA's are not expected to lift other peoples' baggage, would there be a problem if the passenger(s) seated in row 1 did the lifting to re-preempt those particular bins in case of a lapse in attention on the FAs' part? Then all the flight attendant has to do is get on the PA system to summon back the owner.

We had all our camera stuff in that bag..

Sorry but I have to add a caveat, non-hard-sided stuff in the overheads can get squashed.

I have no idea what you are trying to say here. Should I be expected to put other passengers items in the bin since I am seated in row one? NO! nor would I do so.

If someone can't lift their items to put them in the bin they shouldn't expect an FA OR another passenger to put their items in the bin for them.

I agree with Safetymom - most amateur travellers bring FAR too much on board with them.

We have bulkhead seating on our round trip flight to Disney and back. We have no carry on storage under the seat, so we'll have to store our small carryon in the overhead. That being said, am I allowed to keep my purse with me on take off and landing? I do not want to have my cash, credit cards and annual passes in the overhead.
I've looked online and can't seem to find an answer.

I've always kept my handbag on my lap during take off and landing.

I sat in a bulkhead seat on my last trip and it's never been a problem.

Unless your handbag is the size of a large shopping bag, they will not ask you to remove it from your lap.

Just for takeoff and landing, your purse must be in the overhead, if you have no storage below the seat in front of you.

I know NWA does. We only fly in the bulkhead seats ,since DW needs them due to mobility issues, and most of the other airlines make you place your bags up too.

I usually fly USAirways and I've always had to put my bag up if I was in the bulkhead row. It's medium sized. Occasionally in other rows they have made me put it under the seat in front of me.

I can honestly say that I have never been asked to remove my handbag from my lap or from my side.

I've sat all over the plane including the first row and bulkhead seats.

In fact, this last time I flew, I was in the bulkhead row with an empty seat between me and the gentleman who was on the aisle. I had my handbag in the empty seat as well as a couple of magazines. The guy put his newspaper there too. The FAs never said a word to us.

I fly Continental. (But in years past I've flown Delta, United, NW, etc.)

I guess Continental doesn't bug you like the other airlines do?

United/TED, US Airways, Alaska, Lufthansa, Air Canada, Delta, Northwest, Indigo, Spice Airways, Air France, SWISS, Jet Airways....

Those are the only carriers I remember flying in the past year in the bulkhead row where I had to put my purse up. I'll try and remember further back if you'd like but my memory gets a little foggy after all those flights.

Right on sista! I do not lift other passengers bags for any reason. Some of them pack rocks in their carry on's, and I'm not taking the chance of hurting myself or someone else. If you can't handle it on your own, check it. Period, end of discussion.

I wear a string wallet when I travel, when I'm using my laptop bag as my "purse". Over several years now, I've never been asked to remove the string wallet at any point in any flight. It has enough room for cards, cash, + cell phone.

I do much the same. It keeps my cash, passport, ID, credit cards, inhaler, and cell phone at my fingertips.

No you don't have to go back any farther...I believe you!

I don't fly for business, only for pleasure, so I don't fly as frequently as you do.

I guess I've been lucky that they haven't bother me. So, I better keep quiet before my luck runs out.

Actually, I was thinking about you this morning! To clarify, some bulkheads (like row 6 on UA's 319/320 twins) have a cutout at your feet where you CAN store your carryons. Perhaps you had that type of experience.

In the left side of row 9 on a 757 (UA), and row 8, there is no such cutout and bags must go up. In row 1 on Ted or UA there is no cutout; bags must go up.

So maybe in past you were always at a bulkhead with a cutout, and in fact where fine to store your carryon at your feet.

Thank you. I am not going to take any chances.
I'll put my small backpack in the overhead and keep my valuables in one of those under the clothes string bags.
I did go into the travel shop Bags and Luggage and found a couple of different styles. The one I liked was the same size as the Vere Bradley mini hipster. That I love, and would use outside travel. What do you think?

Please know that the only reason we have to put everything in the overhead bin for take off and landing if you are in a bulkhead seat is for safety. The FAA can fine an airline and a flight att. if they do not enforce the rule. The rule is quite simple - everything has to go up (not behind your legs, not in your lap) for take off and landing. After take off pile it as high as you want (we don't evacuate at 30,000 feet). Also I see many passengers who put purses etc underneath the seat behind them - don't do that -not only does it make the person behind you mad but unless you know them you may end up missing items from your purse. (it has happened before). Remember how lucky you are to have the extra leg room and no seat in front of you, it's a small price to pay. Usually if I have a passenger who gives me a hard time I just offer to find them someone who has underseat storage to trade with them (usually the row behind suddenly they become much more compliant) Just remember be nice to the flight att. we don't always like enforcing the rules but we have to because we can't afford the fines -besides it might be me one day. The rules are it goes IN the overhead. Some FAs may not notice, but if they do UP it goes......

I find this thread interesting....

There is a REASON they are telling you to put the bag in the overhead and not in your lap, behind your back etc..... It's for the safety of you and the other passengers. If you cannot live with the FAA rules for the seat, then change it, but please don't play "hide the bag" from the Flight Attentant. The FAA rules do no say "everyone but ME" they apply to us all.
