We have bulkhead seating on our round trip flight to Disney and back. We have no carry on storage under the seat, so we'll have to store our small carryon in the overhead. That being said, am I allowed to keep my purse with me on take off and landing? I do not want to have my cash, credit cards and annual passes in the overhead.:confused3
I've looked online and can't seem to find an answer.:surfweb:

Thanks for any help:)

Just for takeoff and landing, your purse must be in the overhead, if you have no storage below the seat in front of you.

For travel, I always use a purse that has a long enough strap to wear cross-body (or sometimes, for WDW trips, a fanny-pack). I have never been asked to remove either, and I fly 5-6 times/year. ITA about keeping it with me, and not in the overhead! :thumbsup2

Take those things out and put them in your pocket for the flight. Just a thought.

I've put my purse next to me in my seat and not had anyone say anything about it, but I imagine it would depend on the individual flight attendant.

I sit in bulkhead row on almost every flight, regardless of class of service and aircraft. I also fly almost every week.

I am currently using a handbag which is very flat and can get away with putting it behind my legs against my seat. Usually I board first and grab a blanket; that usually means that it is hidden from view. HOWEVER it is so small and flat that it does not impede access and is really up against the luggage of the person behind me.

On only one flight ever did I not have to put my purse in the overhead bin (if it was seen).... it was on an RJ and the FA said 'since it's Saturday, I'll let it go' (It was a business route; virtually empty aircraft)

On TED flights the bin above row 1 is reserved for row 1 passengers; same with United 757's for row 8 and half of row 9 (the half on the left). FAs usually guard these bins carefully to keep space free for us.

But sadly even though I am seated in the front rows, I usually end up boarding first only to secure bin space. Far too many passengers dump their bag into the first bin and then go back several rows to their seat.

Thank you all so much for all your advice. I think I'll look for something small and flat to just hold my money, credit card and passes. If it should have a shoulder strap it should fit under my sweater or light jacket.

bavaria, I so wish airlines would require customers to only use their own overhead until everyone has placed their own carryon in place. If there is extra space, by all means use it. However, someone sitting in the back should not beable to place their luggage in someone elses overhead so they do not have to carry it down the isle to their seat.

I wish flight attendants when they see someone do it make them remove it. People also need to stop carrying all their belongings on the plane. Some people bring on way way too much stuff.

The space above your seat is not "your own" overhead. Overhead bins belong to no one; they are equal access. Some of them are loaded with pilows and blankets, some with safety equipment etc. If the bin over your seat were truly yours, that would mean that the people who happened to sit in seats under those bins would have no space.

i always have my purse with me in my seat....i have never been told to put it up...but it's not particularly big.....
i sometimes wear it over my head (long strap, in a crisscross across my body) and sometimes it's just in my seat with me, squished together in the seat with me....no one has every said a word to me....
i fly many many many many many times a year....

I don't think that Belle meant that the overhead bin was only for her - I sense that she knows that it is a shared space, but was using the term 'own' to mean 'store your luggage in the bin above/near your seat, not several rows in front of your row'

UA FA's are pretty good about guarding row 1 and row 8/9 bin space on TED and 757's.

I have a colleague who does play bin police, but just as I don't like to play Contemporary parking police I also don't want to play airplane bin police.

I sat next to someone recently that had her small orange purse next to her and she was told it had to go in the overhead bin. The conversation got a little heated when the passenger got into a fight with the f/a attendant over it. She was almost escorted off the plane because she didn't want to put the purse up.

But I strongly recommend www.seatguru.com
.
Very easy to use and quite helpful when I fly Continental (15+ times/year) and want to know in advance . . .
Some bulkhead seats have little storage areas at feet level; some have no storage.
.
Your mileage may vary!

Do you always sit in the bulkhead row? Anytime I've been in the bulkhead row, the F/A made me put it up. I usually wait until everyone boards; even with suitcases in the overhead, you can still fit your purse in front of them. After takeoff, I remove it and then put it back before landing.

Since I come with my passport in hand, I wear a "neck safe", which tucks under my shirt. That is where I carry the passport, cash and credit cards. Would that work for you?

Only because they can not trust the airlines to not lose their luggage.

They still bring too much one if that is the reason. I travel quite a bit and have had my luggage delayed for a few hours, nothing more.

I don't think passengers should hold up other passengers because they don't trust that the airline will deliver their luggage.

A few observations...yes, people do tend to bring too much onto the plane with them. They try to think of every possible eventuality and plan accordingly. Yes, I guess you could be stuck on the plane, on the runway for hours on end, but in all probability that isn't going to happen. So, bring a book, a few toys for the little ones, your travel docs, your wallet/checkbook, a change of clothes and you're good to go. I always fit whatever I need into a tote bag that fits underneath the seat, and have a bag that stays on my person, across my shoulder/chest during takeoffs and landings. When in the air, it goes on the floor.
For those bulkhead seats, I keep my bag across my chest. I've never been told it has to go above. But, on my last flight to MCO, in August, we were in row 2. The woman in front of me, in row 1, bulkhead seat, had a huge bag with her. A really big tote bag type purse. The FA told her that she would stow it in the overhead bin for her and then get it down for her when they got to cruising altitude.
So..if it's small enough, you should be able to put it across your chest/shoulder. If not, take whatever you have to have out of it (cash, credit card, ID) and then put it above you.

No, you don't 'own' the overhead bin above you. But, I have to tell you...when we were in row 2, I was getting more than a bit nervous about not having room in the overhead for my one bag that would have to go up there. We had all our camera stuff in that bag...no way was I letting it go too far away from me! But, there were a ton of people boarding before us with copious amounts of carryon luggage...I don't think anyone checked any luggage on that flight...just kidding. But, there was one little spot for my one bag when I finally boarded. There does seem to be a number of people who stash their bag in that first one or two compartments, then they move to the rear to their seat..that way they don't have to lug their stuff back and forth, through that narrow aisle.
