Bugs at Poly

Now, I can not be certain that the dozens of bites on my legs are from bed bugs, but I would find a little strange if I was attacked by that many mosquitoes and did not notice a single one. Tried to check the bed, but didn't see anything, also not real sure what we were looking for. Tried to talk to a manager, oh wait...make that a VERY UNSYMPATHETIC manager, who looked annoyed, and only said, we will send someone up to that room to check. We were checking out, so giving us a different room wasn't really an option at that point. My husband's comment...gosh, even at the Holiday Inn they would have atleast taken some money off your bill!

My wife and I woke up with a bunch of bites on our honeymoon at the Polynesian. We were going to Universal that day and I called housekeeping from my cell phone and asked them to change the sheets.

They gave us a song and dance and tried EVERYTHING under the sun to not have to change the sheets.

"Just be sure you close your patio door at night and don't leave it open during the day."

"Okay - I don't do that anyway, but I will make sure not to in the future. Can you please still change the sheets?"

"Well did you bring in towels from the pool? You might have brought something in from there."

"No, we didn't use towels from the pool. Can you please change the sheets?"

"Sometimes there's bugs in the sand. Did you wear your shoes on the beach?"

"Look, we're busy right now. I really called to just make sure you guys change the sheets, please?"

"FINE."

I think I was attacked by the little buggers at The Dolphin last week. Not much concern from the management there either.

I remember seeing/reading some where that places really need to clean the entire room, curtains, carpet and all and possibly even get rid of the mattresses. This could be why hotels get so snippy about the cmplaints of bed bugs. BTW I was reading on another Disney board and saw a similar complaint about bed bugs at Poly and an uncooperative staff. My guess is they know there is a problem and don't want to fix it.

My DS10 just got over an allergic reaction to a set of bites. We went to the beach for the night and he ended up on steroids after 5 visits to the doctor. He was so bad. We do know if it was from the sand he was rolling around in on shore, or the bed he slept in.

We are headed to the Poly next month with my parents. Let's just say, I am extremely anxious after that experience...

I've gone to the Poly on days off to each lunch and sit on the beach, and I've gotten bitten up badly just being on the beach chairs and not sitting on the sand. I've never been bitten by anything when I've been in the rooms, but 5 minutes on that sand and I look like I have chicken pox

If you had bed bugs, you should have noticed small dark brown/red spots on the bedding. You probably got bit by no-seeums, gnat like bugs that do bite.

Hopefully, they were the no-seeums like the other poster stated. They are so small that you can't see them (how they get their name), and you usually can't tell you have been bitten until later when you see the bites.. It seems if they were bed bugs, you would have had a good chance of bringing them home with you. Either way, I think your concerns should have been addressed by the hotel staff.

Now those two words have been mentioned, panic will ensue. The OP does not even know for sure, relax.

1) Unfortunately, there have been posts about bedbugs at Poly and POP.
2) Once they are in the room, it is tough to ge rid of them.
3) In fact, the headboards even have to be removed to fumigate.
4) The bad part is that you feel when they bite.
5) You just see the evidence of bites the next morning.

No, I am not absolutely positively certain they were bed bugs. However, I can say...I did not step foot on the beach, or sit anywhere on the ground while at the Poly. I have gone through all the things we brought home and haven't seen anything, yet. I think I was just really disgusted at the reaction from the staff. No concern, no apologies, nothing. I was not looking for a free stay, or anything, just a little concern would have been nice. We were in Aoteora, or however you spell it. The saddest part is that otherwise, it was a great room! We only paid for a garden room, but that "garden" room had a fantastic view of Cinderella Castle!

Different bug sprays work on different things- I remember seeing some with labels mentioning that they worked on no-see ums, check when you buy at the store. I'd look into those bug repellant wipes as I don't think you can check bug spray if you fly- not sure on that. We got them for our trip but never used them- my husband and I went down to the Poly beach one night and sat on the swing for about fifteen minutes and didn't get bit by anything then- but I wouldn't think of sitting in the sand from all I've read on the DIS about bug bites there. Maybe sand fleas? I dunno. . .

Sorry to the OP that you had a bad bug experience. I'd definitely tell management again that they should check that room top to bottom. FIRST thing I did when we checked into Tokelau was lift up all the bedding and check the mattress for stains/signs of bedbugs and we had nothing- and no one got a single bite in 8 nights. So sorry for your trouble-whatever bit you. Management should be VERY concerned and VERY helpful anytime a guest has a problem

I would follow up with a letter to management. There should have been more concern. How hard is it to send someone up to a room at some point during the day to just take a look at the mattress? Not hard.

But I have to say, you probably would have physically seen them. bedbugs are a decent size. I wouldn't be surprised if it is the noseeum bug. They can be in rooms too. They are so small and pack a powerful bite. They get me outside while walking the dog during the summer months here in FL.

What scares me is not being bitten by bedbugs as annoying as that can be, it's the possibility of bringing them home. A friend of mine brought some home from a vacation and had the darndest time getting rid of them. They can be really awful.

I think that happened to me also when we were at pop the first week of sept. It has never happened to me before so I wasn't sure. The only thing that made me think it was bed bugs was because I woke up with bites and I thought maybe I was bitten by a mosquito the night before, but I never saw a single mosquito. All the bites were around my ankles and one on my shoulder and one later on my wrist. My daughter told me she had them on her ankles also. I thought about it on our last day and never mentioned it to the hotel. But now I am sure that is what it is. Should I call and let them know? We have reservations next year at pop, but if this is a problem at that hotel maybe I should change. Any suggestions would be great.

Florida, as in many other tropical weather states, is loaded with biting bugs that live in grass, sand and fly in the air. If they were bed bugs the bites would be distributed around the body, not just ankles and lower legs. Bites on the lower extremities would indicate a bug that is in the grass or sand- and there is sand between the bricks on the walkways all over the parks. We were attacked by ants just standing under a tree for a few minutes. There is sand everywhere down there and it's hardly noticable sometimes but alot of bugs live there.

The people at the front desk may have been annoyed that you were reporting the bites at your checkout rather than during your stay. Since you said that you expected something off your bill they may have thought you were playing them for a discount.

I never walked in any sand or grass, and I didn't notice a bite until I woke up and it was itchy. I was there this time just 6nights and last year 10 nights and last year I never had one bite and we were at the water parks walking in the sand, and I still never got bitten once. I never did mention it to the hotel, nor would I ask for a discount or money(if you are refering to me).

I stayed at Port Orleans Riverside this past May and came home with about a dozen very itchy bites on my legs. I am quite certain it was NOT from bed bugs, but rather from the "no-seeums" because I never saw mosquitos when I was there. The bites and itchiness lasted a good couple of weeks after I returned, and I had posted over on the Theme Parks board to ask if anyone knew what had bitten me, and after reading many opinions and researching various bugs/bites, in the end, I'm fairly certain it was the "no-seeums".
