Bugs at Poly

Not to discount bedbugs, because really I have no idea what bit you, but here are some other ideas - noseeums (as others have suggested), sand fleas, and chiggers. All can come from walking around outside, especially at dusk in Florida, or anywhere where there is vegetation, grass, sand, etc. You won't see the critters, but you'll sure feel them. We were attacked walking (on pavement, btw) through the back entrance to Fantasmic! and ended up with lots of small, itchy bites all over our ankles.

I feel better knowing it is probably not bed bugs. Is there any repellent that would keep from getting bit? The spray used for mosquitos, will that work also? I have a trip planned next year and would not like bites all over my ankles.

I have 2 suggestions...

1) When first checking in check matress's to make sure these aren't actual bed bugs.
2) After coming from the park make sure you have NO bites and even if you don't see bites i'd suggest taking a warm shower or bath.

I don't know if i actually wanna stay at the Poly now :confused3

I mean i do see that it's a great hotel, but i also heard someone found a dead - bird eating tarantula!!

:scared1:

So, Poly is second on the list now for me! LOL, WL, Contemporary or AKL... Mhmm? Which shall it be? Hehe

It might be good to change the name of your thread to Bugs at the Poly instead of Bed Bugs at Poly because you have no proof there were bed bugs.

After first hearing of bed bugs, its the first thing I check when I check in...they would just gross me out!:scared1:

OP, you didn't mention how many bites your husband had and if you were bitten on your first night or last. The way your post was written sounds like he was looking for a discount on top of free dining. That may not be the case, it just sounds that way to me.

WTH!!! I have been around here for a while and have never heard of a tarantula at WDW! Are you sure? I didn't think that they even lived in FL :scared:

If you read both of his/her posts you would see that the apparent comment about "money off of the bill" was made in sarcasm and out of frustration at the lack of concern by the staff (IMO) and in the other post he/she clearly states they did not want any refunds. Where are you getting the free dinning request? I only see free dinning mentioned in the OP's signature. :confused3

I understand a few of you are "poly fans" but no place is perfect and bugs can happen anywhere. Furthermore, quite a few others gave very helpful info and suggestions, reassuring the OP that more than likely it was sand fleas or noseeums.

I agree with this..If they have bugs shame on them but don't label them with absolutely no proof.

DH and I have stayed at almost every resort on property and have never seen any evidence of bed bugs. The first thing he does when we walk in a resort room is lift up the mattress, looks behind the bed and headboard. He even brings a flashlight to look into the corners. He teaches history and does an entire unit on these suckers. They sometimes live behind the electrical outlets and baseboards, coming out in the dark to feed. He says the bites are usually in clusters and look like dark read mosquito bites. People have various reactions to them, just like other bug bites. One sure way of telling if it is really bed bugs is to look at the sheets. If there are small specks of something that look likes blood, it is the bug's feces. (I know, gross. DH is giving me a lesson as I type) If you have any doubt of what bit you, please make sure to thoroughly clean out your suitcases and wash any clothing and sneakers before putting them in your closet or drawers.

Oh, I WAS trying to reassure the OP! If her husband did not have the same bites (wouldn't she have mentioned his bites as well? I know I would have!) then it is highly unlikely she received the bites from bed bugs. Also, it sounded like the bites did not take place until the last night. Wouldn't it make sense if the bed had bugs that the biting would have taken place earlier in the stay? Just trying to bring some common sense to the table.

Of course I am a fan and of course no place is perfect. But something about this story just doesn't add up in my book.

You are right! Unless the bugs just arrived on the last night (or they brought the bugs with them accidently), the OP should have had bites every night. Was that the case? And everyone sleeping in the room should have had the same bites. All over the body and not just around the ankles and feet.

These could also be fleas. This is the time of year. THe guest prior to you or anyone could have brought them into your room.

This is a picture. Our cats had a problem this year, generally we keep them treated by Aug or Sept,
I have bites like these pictures, but moistly tinier and not so many of them.

Now, I can not be certain that the dozens of bites on my legs are from bed bugs, but I would find a little strange if I was attacked by that many mosquitoes and did not notice a single one. Tried to check the bed, but didn't see anything, also not real sure what we were looking for. Tried to talk to a manager, oh wait...make that a VERY UNSYMPATHETIC manager, who looked annoyed, and only said, we will send someone up to that room to check. We were checking out, so giving us a different room wasn't really an option at that point. My husband's comment...gosh, even at the Holiday Inn they would have atleast taken some money off your bill!

Don't mean to be a doubting Thomas -- could you possibly have the Disney Rash? Also known as Golfer's Vasculitis. It causes an itchy red rash on the legs. Some people get little red "flecks", some people get a huge rash. Typically, no raised areas with Disney Rash.

Good grief....I am annoyed and offended that there are so many people here who take things so out of proportion. I was NOT looking for a discount, or a comp...just a staff that seemed geniuinely concerned about the well being of the guests. That was both my point, and my husband's point. And if some of you would read the literature, it does indicate that bites do occur mostly on the lower extremities. I am not making things up, I am not "out to get" the Poly, I just wanted people to be informed that this may be an issue.

That does it!! We're staying at SSR again this November, and I will ask for the newest building, in hopes of avoiding the whole situation. We've got enough things for our 'mature' minds to grapple with. Worrying about bugs is not going to be on the agenda.

Well, I agree with your point :thumbsup2

The image that I got in my head of bites and/or rashes on lower extremities made me think of Golfer's Vasculitis. I've been on other Disney World fan sites for years now... and the subject of "that itchy Disney rash" comes up EVERY SUMMER (or so it seems). When we've been traveling with others and they've developed the rash, it LOOKS like bug bites, it itches like bug bites, but it ain't bug bites and anithistamines or creams don't do a thing for it.

(the capitalizations are not shouting, just being emphatic)

Again, I agree with you that you'd expect the staff (ESPECIALLY at the Poly b/c they have a well-earned reputation for being superb), to show some concern and interest in the situation. IF for no other reason than if there are indeed bed-bugs they'd better nip it in the bud and fix the situation.

So, hope you have a great day :)

We ALWAYS buy and bring the zippered vinyl matress and pillow covers on our trips and make sure that house keeping LEAVES THEM ON!!! I feel much better this way.:thumbsup2

I had this rash near my ankles when we were at the Poly last month and I also had it when in Las Vegas. I attribute it to the heat, humidity, and the amount of walking I did!

Having a rash is very annoying, especially on your last day (maybe better than on your first day?;) though). My thoughts are that the manager said he would send someone up to check on your concerns. How much sympathy could he have shown? Once word hits the internet that all someone has to do is say they have a rash and Disney is "sympathetic" aka:"discount like the Holiday Inn", then most people checking out will be itching like they have the chicken pox!:goodvibes Please know that I AM NOT saying that is what you were doing!!! Also, I am not a Poly fan either, although I don't have anything against it. I am just looking at it from Disney's perspective and I hate the whole bed bug thread issue whenever it comes up. Ewww
