I've recently read several posts that mentioned snakes along the walk to DTD, cockroaches (or palmetto bugs) and little geckoes in the rooms -- all at Old Key West. We are booked for our first visit to OKW in October. Please tell me I don't have to worry about all these creepy crawly things at OKW!!

And, does anyone think these are at other Disney resorts? We've never seen any of this at BWV, BCV, VWL, POFQ, or CB.

I'm thinking (and hoping) it's probably just an occasional sighting.....

at any of the resorts...:)

It's Florida though, so if you do see anything - in your room - that makes you uncomfortable, let a CM/front desk know:)

Have fun!!

:sunny:

They are all over. Even if you haven't seen them, they are still around. It's just that it's been reported at OKW lately. I wouldn't worry about it though, it's Florida. Bugs, lizzards, reptiles and humans all love it there.

the little lizards are all over.

I miss them when they aren't around. they almost cute!

snakes I haven't seem any.

Disney does a better job of killing off roaches (I don't care what you call it - a roach is a roach) or did.

maybe because of the eagles and hawks now in the area - they can't use what they did????

birds and snakes will eat these things - then the hawks and eagles eat them and anything else they can catch.

don't forget all the bunnies! Saw a deer - really across the main street from OKW.

the construction at SSR is bringing out alot of creatures.

if disney does anything with the Treehouses (next door to OKW) then I really think this will increase!

I've seen everything from armadillos to snakes to gators to bugs and insects too numerous to mention. They live in Florida, so seeing them isn't really all that strange.

I do know from personal experience that there are long black snakes around (didn't stay in that room long enough to find out what kind though).

We stayed in the treehouse villas in the late 80's and at least one snake got into our unit. My mom freaked and they told her that was common and that they come in through the dryer vents.....(needless to say we spent the rest of that trip at the Poly- 2nd floor)

If the snakes were there then I can imagine they are all over that area though.

We were at BCV last June and I could have sworn I saw a long black snake cross the pathway by the self park area!! It was pouring down rain and I saw it cross into the bushes. Stopped me cold!

The lizards are everywhere! We've seen them at BCV and SSR and VWL where they come out to warm themselves at night by the hot spa.

We havent had one try to stay with us in our Villa yet. Good Thing too, because I would have to get a 2 bedroom to meet occupancy! :goodvibes

Do you have any insects of bugs where you live.
Even in large urban cities bugs do exist.
With all the foilage at OKW, it is their home.
Now if one invaded my room and tried to drink my diet pepsi we'd fighting.

Yup, that's probably the same one I saw at the bus stop one night. It had gotten "stuck" on the covered walkway. So it was very actively trying to get out, slithering frantically up the walls. A CM came along and just moved it into the bushes (far away!) I'm pretty afraid of snakes, but Mom, on her first trip to WDW, was terrified!

We have seen snakes and bugs and lizzards and gators at allmost every resort we have stayed at. In 98 on our honeymoon we had a raccoon try and get into the hot tub with us at Coronado Springs. We have seen Armadillos all over at OKW and even snakes they are very common there. We have even seen Alligators at FW and CSR and numerous other areas.

We were at OKW in late June and did not see a thing! First trip to OKW and the 1Br was wonderful and spotless - no bugs, no snakes, no roaches!!

The next to the last rattlesnake bite patient I had was from a pigmy rattlesnake in the garden section of Wal Mart. And there was a lady recently in Jacksonville bitten by a snake (presumed water moccasin) that was coiled up in the toilet lid. Snakes, bugs, spiders, ants, roaches, various lizards, noseums, mosquito's and others are all commonplace in FL. We have Lyme Dz, Eastern Equine Encephalitis, West Nile virus, and others. There are risk and gross things all over.

I was in a nice hotel in the Embassy section of Washington, D.C. -- which shall remain nameless for obvious reasons -- a few weeks ago. Saw not one, but three, RATS in a three-night stay. These were not mice, they were RATS! They were so large, I thought they were feral pigs! One roasted could have fed a family of four!

I'll take a harmless lizard or tree frog any day!

If you spend enough time in Florida, you will see a snake sooner or later. I've seen snakes at OKW, BCV, and Marriott's Grande Vista resorts. Also in Islands of Adventure park. And frequently on Sanibel island. And at a Hyatt resort in Bonita Springs.

The husband of a friend from work has West Nile Virus. He's been hospitalized for about two weeks. But he is going to be okay. Mosquitos are everywhere and so is WNV.

Roaches have been around since before the Ice Age. They probably were one of the few survivors. In fact, we're probably related to roaches.

At least they don't smoke and don't try to steal your spot for Spectromagic.

JUST back from an OKW visit. I read the post about the roaches, etc. at OKW and kept close watch for critters in our room. Didn't see a thing. The walkways of the resort are crawling with the little lizards, but they are harmless and move out of your way, but NOTHING in the room. And the room was spotless. Looked brand new.

We did see about a three foot snake at Typhoon Lagoon though.

I have mostl seen the little lizards, bunny rabits and ducks at OKW. I have seen a very occasional Palmetto bug, which is essentially a big cockroach :earseek: . I have never seen a snake, although I am sure they exist there...it is Florida, after all.

It's Florida and my kids spent nearly and hour at the CBR trying to catch one of those cute little lizards. No luck tho, they are too darn fast. Never saw anything like that in any of our rooms ever. I did speak to a Disney Exec. one time that I happened to have run into. He was walking about incognito and he and I got to talking w/ him. After about 10 mintes into our conversation he came clean who he was. He gave me some inside info about the parks and explained the sound of the crickets heard through out the entire WDW resort was a piped in recording. He explained that Disney does such a good job with pest control that the insects that the crickets eat are killed so the crickets don't come onto the property so their sound is piped in for that woodsy feel. After that I did notice the cricket sound every where around the resort after dusk. He was also kind enough to give my kids 30 trading pins each. They were all the same pin but he explained that they could use them to trade with CM's for a nice collection. Man did he save me bundle of money.
Any way,
Cheers
PS. I did see five foot tall black and white mice all over ;-)

Those cut little lizards tend to carry Salmonella, as do reptiles in general.

Eeewwwwwwww Guys! WAAAY too much information!!!!! :faint:

FWIW, I don't recall ever seeing anything remotely resembling a snake or a cockroach at WDW. An occasional small lizard/gecko and maybe an ant or two. That's all.

I know insects and reptiles live in Florida, but I don't recall ever having to worry about them showing up uninvited. The Florida bunch all seem to be very polite - maybe they only come out after I go by, LOL!

Best wishes -
