I'm going to Disney World tomorrow. We are packing and my wife insists on bringing bug spray. In the years of listening to Disney podcasts, I never heard of a mosquito problem. Should we pack it? Will we use it? Thanks.

Yes!
But we find using OFF "towelettes" easier ( and less messy) than spray.

I have never put bug spray on to go to WDW. I guess if you are staying in certain resorts you could need some but not in the parks.

I don't know about the bug spray but I am TOTALLY JEALOUS that you are leaving tomorrow. :upsidedow I still have a month to go!

We got bit at CBR in April but not in the parks at all. I agree with Robo and find the towelettes easier.

With all the rain & humidity we have in FL, there can be a lot of mosquito's and noseeums (the tiny ones that you cannot see but can feel!)

I saw a ton of mosquitoes at DTD in May. So while there may not be many in the parks, they are other places.

Ditto on the bug repellant wipes! The only place I used them was during the evening at the Poly beach, waiting for the fireworks.

Ive never experienced it myself, but have never been during the summer months. I just read someones trip report that said her family was bitten badly even with using the spray.

I would pack it just in case :confused3

NEVER experienced a bug issue at any of the parks. Maybe at the resorts?

i get eaten alive by bugs & i rarely get bitten at disney...

Bugs love to bite me unfortunately. At WDW the only places I've gotten bug bites is on the beaches at night and Winter Summerland mini golf at night.

For the love of God pack the bug spray! If you don't use it nothing lost. If you need it & told your sweet DW not to pack it you'll never hear the end of it :rotfl:

Agree with PPs!

Bugs are not admitted into WDW... They cannot afford the admission. (UNless they are part of the Cast ... like ITTBAB) LOL!

We usually go in July... TWO of us are "BUG MAGNETS" and I've NEVER packed bug spray ...never needed it.

They let loose Ladybugs into the parks so that all mosquitos are eaten and bugs are not a problem...

That being said... I agree with PP...better let Dear Wife pack it... :)

Hugs,
Mary

We only seem to have a problem with being bitten while waiting in line for the bus at Epcot and in Fronteirland at MK. We use the OFF towelettes, too. They work great!

Pack it.

We just got back yesterday from a 2 week AKV stay, and the local news stations last week were reporting at least 10+ cases of Dengue Fever in and around Orlando. :scared1:

They said it was carried by mosquitoes that bit in either day or night time, and are inside or outside. Local communities were stepping up spraying schedules (and I am assuming WDW did also).

Should you bring bug spray... hell yes.

Spray (wipe) yourself before you leave the park. The mosquitoes are ALL on the ferry boats, and in the parking lot, with a few at the monorail. They wait for the giant mass of stank sweaty people to provide them with food and water, and a few jump you in your car.

DEET. The higher the % of DEET the longer it lasts, it's like SPF. Again you'll be fine if you spray yourself before you leave the park, but you have to spray all your exposed skin (read directions).

Can you get sick? Maybe, but not likely anything serious. I did lose 24 hours to a Mickey Mosquito bite recently so why chance it. Did I recover? Yes. Was I instructing DW to get ready to call 911, yes. Did she have to? No, thank God, but I would familiarize yourself with the symptoms of encephalitis, you don't want it on your vacation. If you feel like you have the worst flu ever, are confused, hot and cold, with a migraine, nausea, the squirts, and your fever scares you... you might want to see a doctor. Or you could be like me and say, "Honey I think my brain is swelling, if my fever hits 104 and I start convulsing, call an ambulance."

Here's another tip: On the ferry, find a giant spider, frog, lizard, snake, or all 4 and stand near them, the mosquitos will not be near them, except for a few stupid ones.

All in all I've been bitten here about as much as up north so as long as you don't wander into a swamp, lake, Reedy Creek, or jungle after 6pm you're okay. I won't even discuss psorophora ciliata whom I had to punch, slam a door on, and finally take the dirt devil to... then I had to google the thing because I was impressed.

I always get eaten up so badly by the noseeums in the parks and any of the walkways with a lot of bushes in the resorts. Word of caution though. If you have freshly applied repellent on, stay clear of any merchandise bags. Several times we have had the color from the bags rub off on our legs after freshly applied repellent.....what a mess!
