Buffy Fans, Could Giles Be Dead?

OK, its a very geeky question, but I am curious what you think.

In the last episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Giles returned to Sunnydale.... or did he? Did anyone notice that he almost never took his hands out of his pockets? He never touched anyone or anything. My wife and I played the tape back to be sure (yes, I know, I told you we're geeks). He is also putting a lot of pressure on Buffy, telling her that she is the only one who can save the world so that she does not reach out to her friends. This is clearly not helping.

I suspect that Giles is dead (just as the end of the prior episode hinted) and that we are seeing "the first" in Giles Form. Remember, the first can only assume the form of someone who has died (meaning Giles is dead) and is not solid while in this form (which explains the lack of touching anything). Opinions?

Bonus question: Is it really Buffy's mom who is appearing to her in her dreams? The dream mom seems more helpful than the "first" version that appeared to Dawn (in one of the scariest scenes I have ever seen on TV).

That is EXACTLY what I thought when Buffy opened the door and he was standing there. I was like, "NO BUFFY DON'T LET HIM IN! THAT'S NOT GILES!!!" I missed that one episode though when they hinted at his death...Our UPN station here thought it would be more fun to show basketball games. I would prefer to think that it is really Giles because it would be too sad if he died :(

I also hope Faith comes back. Please tell me I didn't hear Buffy say the First already got her. I was feeding DS and I heard her say some about it going after Faith and then it would come after her.

I read on a Buffy message board someone saying that they should create a whole army of slayers. All you have to do is "kill" a slayer and then bring her back to life (like in that movie Flat Liners) and keep doing that until you have a bunch of slayers. When I saw all those future slayers coming in, I thought that was what had happened :)

WDWHound,
I never even thought of that, but now that you brought it up, I bet you are right. I kept wondering how he "got away" from the First. If that's true, that makes me sad - I love Giles!

My co-worker also wondered if any of these other would-be slayers were brought on since Sarah Michelle Geller will probably not be back next year, and even if Dawn becomes a fighter, she's still not a slayer and they need a slayer. What do you think of that theory?

Princess_Aurora: Faith is alive and well and sitting in jail in LA. Buffy only mentioned that they need her, not that she was dead.
Rumor is she will return late in the season, first on Angel, then on Buffy. There is more to that rumor, but I will leave it at that.

The scene you missed was of Giles bending over a dying watcher. A servant of the first came up from behind him swinging an ax. The scene cut away a split second before the ax would have impacted Giles's head. There didn't seem to be be any way Giles could have survived.

I have read some spoilers that might hint at the fact that Giles is not dead. I think hes normal Giles and he is trying to root out the a rat that is working for the first.

Ah, but Dawn was literally made out of Buffy when she was created (which is why buffy could die in her place in the finale of season 5). This means she could be a slayer.

I hadn't thought of it that way, WDWHound, but that certainly could be one scenario. What I love about this show is you can never really predict exactly what is going to happen because Joss Whedon just always surprises you. At least once or twice an episode, something happens to surprise me.

Meanwhile, did you see that both TV Guide and Entertainment Weekly named it one of the top ten TV shows this year. When will the Emmys ever give it the credit it deserves!!

I think Dawn will eventually come into slayer strenghth. Like you WDWHound, I think that since she was made from Buffy's blood she has to have some Slayer in there. I think she just needs time to discover her potential. I was thinking if Buffy didn't return to do the next season that maybe it would become Dawn's show with Buffy only being in it every now and then...unless she dies for real this season.

Speaking of Angle...does anyone know when the new shows start??? The last episode I saw they were fighting that apocoliptic demon and I kept thinking, "If Buffy were there, she could help kick some butt."

I'm glad Faith's not dead. I knew she was in jail because she turned herself in for all those murders. Anyone know how long her sentence is? I'm thinking since she turned herself in and if she could've done the insanity plea (because let's face it, she was) then maybe she could get out soon. I liked Faith before she went all bad and I really want her to come back.

JeniC- PM me with those spoilers please :)

Last year's musical episode was nominated, but they "forgot" to put it on the ballet! Given that, I doubt you will ever see the Emmys recognize this amazing show.

I thought the same thing about Giles as you did Hound, but then I thought it would be even more surprising if it really was him. He even had a worried look when Buffy gave her "going to war" speech.

Good questions Hound and ones I'm not sure I'm ready to answer after just one episode with Giles. I will say that I do believe it is Joyce and not the first who is appearing to Buffy.

I will also say that at one time there was talk of Joss Whedon creating a series for broadcast in England based on Giles so unless that show plan has been axed (I looked and couldn't find anything) it would be dumb for Joss to kill off Giles, then again he killed off Buffy a few times so who knows ;) (Not knowing is one of the things that makes it fun). One thing all fans of Buffy know about Joss is that he likes to lead the fans one way and pull a complete direction switch when you least expect it.

I have the episode on tape at home but have not had a chance to watch it. I will keep your theory in mind.

wow....i've missed a lot!!! I haven't watched for a while!!!
