I have for the first time froze my leftover ham bone. I need recipes! I was thinking beans and ham but have never made it so have no idea on how to!! :confused3 Anyone with great recipes for ham bones...with a little ham left on it?

HI! I am devasted to have lost my Christmas ham bone because my fridge briefly died!!! Here is what I would have done with it....

In a big ole pot I'd cook off some chopped onion in a little oil... get them down to clear and soft... maybe with a little garlic in there... then I'd throw in the (defrosted) ham bone, and let it get hot enough that some of the fat is coming off it.... at this point, I'd add my beans. And yes, I'm lazy, so I add canned - great northerns, cannelini's, white kidney, even black eyed peas... any "white" bean usually works best. As for how many cans - how many people ya got? It'd say at LEAST three.... and I'd probably take about half a can of beans and mash them, then add them in (makes the base thicker). I wouldn't have drained the beans either - so you'll have a little liquid in there. For more liquid, add in some chicken broth - as much as you like to get it to the consistency you want. If you get it too thin you can always scoop out a half cup or so of beans, mash them to puree and add them back in... I'd add black pepper and hot sauce... wait to the end to add salt - it might not be needed. You can cook it on a hard simmer for as little as 15 minutes, as long as an hour... anything longer than that, and you'll wanna add more liquid for sure...

ANYWHO.... that isn't in recipe format, but it should get you one option!! I tend to not have recipes... I just throw stuff in a pot and it all mostly works out brilliantly!! :oP

Oh, and I'd make biscuits. Or cornbread. But for me, I'm a biscuit girl.

OH - and before you are ready to eat it... scrape all the ham and edible stuff off the bone, and toss the bone. Taste the soup throughout --- you can season it any way you like - mild, or spicy... salty... whatever you like!!!

GOOD LUCK! I'm jealous!!!

Split pea soup!!!

I go to Walmart and get 2 bags of peas and 3 cans of chicken broth. I put the broth and about 3-4 additional cups of water in a big stock pot with the bone and cook it for an hour or so. Take out the bone and set aside. Add the peas, a bit of onion powder and thyme. Bring to a boil and reduce heat to simmer. Cook for about 40 min or so. While peas are cooking, remove remaining bits of meat from bone and add to soup. I have made this with slightly firm peas and I've cooked them down to mush, it just depends on your personal taste.

We just finished our ham and bean soup yesterday.

I got my recipe on cooks.com.

It is so simple yet really yummy!

I made ham & beans yesterday from our Christmas ham bone! I served it over rice and I swear, thanks to the ham bone, it was the best I have ever made!!

I just soaked the beans over night, drained and cooked for several hours on the stove (I like the beans to get a nice creamy consistency) Added in the ham bone and bits of ham I cut off of it. Seasoned with salt and Cavendar's at the end of cooking. Good heavens, it was good!

Try Grandma B's Bean Soup over at all recipes dot com, it's the best bean soup I have ever had!

Here's my "recipe":

In a crockpot, put the ham bone, one large, chopped onion, one bag of "15 bean soup" with the seasoning packet and one bag of lentils. Add a couple tablespoons of celery salt and cover with water. Cook on low for about 8 hours. After 8 hours, take the ham bone out and shred any large pieces of ham. Any leftovers go in the freezer!

Do you use pinto beans? I usually just throw in the ham bone with pinto beans (soaked overnight) in the crockpot and we have a bowl of beans with cornbread. I never thought to serve my beans over rice....that really sounds yummy.

Here is my recipe. Buy one bag of dried beans. Wash them off and put them in the crock pot. Add the ham bone. Cover with water, atleast 2/3 the way to the top. Add salt and pepper. Turn on low and leave on all day. Come home to a great smelling house and an awesome dinner!!! :thumbsup2

I use lima beans and cook rice and cut up an onion to go on top. YUM!!! (Can you tell I'm from the south?)

1 bag 16 bean mix (1 lb. dry beans). Soak overnight or cover with water, bring to a boil, shut off heat and let stand 1 hour. Rinse beans. Add 4-6 cups water, 1 can tomatoes (large can diced), garlic cloves to taste, thyme, salt, pepper, oregano and basil. And ham bone :bitelip: . Simmer all day (6-7 hours) and add water as necessary. Awesome soup! More like a stew really, but it is soooo gooood!

Yes, I used pinto beans. I love the crock pot, but I prefer beans cooked on the stove, if you have the time. They have a creamier texture if you boil them rapidly for a couple of hours.

Ignorant cook question here: We had a Smithfield spiral sliced ham last night with honey glaze and after I cut off all of the slices, there was still quite a bit of ham and fat left on the bone so I threw it in the fridge. Can I use this bone and stuff in beans or do I need to trim it all off and use just the bone?

I leave all the stuff on the bone when I cook mine, the meat falls off into the beans, yummy!

YUP! ::yes:: I leave all the meat and scraps on mine too! Anything that doesn't slice off easily goes in the soup pot!
