Budget Hotels in NYC

We have never been to NYC and would love to go there this summer. I have no idea which part of the city is safest/best to stay. We plan on going to a Broadway show and also Statue of Liberty. Any ideas are appreciated.

I know a lot of people will stay on the NJ side (much cheaper) and take public transportation to NYC. I worked in Secaucus, NJ, and there are a few hotels there with bus service right outside their door to NYC. Saw many tourists waiting for these busses.

If you have a car, it's not too difficult to get there either. Lincoln Tunnel close by. These hotels are near the NJ Turnpike too, which I believe takes you to Statue of Liberty.

Traffic can be a nightmare.

Another great option is to park your car at the Weehawken Port Imperial Ferry terminal and take the ferry across the Hudson. You wouldn't have to fight the NYC traffic or pay an arm and leg for parking . We've done this before and it's nice to see the NYC skyline. I believe there may be some hotels near the ferry too.

You will have a great time. There's nothing like the hustle and bustle of NYC.

A heads up staying in NJ, take a look around what's nearby the hotel. We did this a couple years ago and stayed in East Rutherford (or Seacacus? Now can't remember) at a Sheraton. It was a super easy commute into the city- the hotel had a bus for like $3 that took you straight to Port Authority.

BUT- there was *nothing* nearby. When we came back to the hotel, there was only a smoky bar to eat in (I had 3 kids with me). We'd gone with DH (who had a job to do in NJ, eg had the car). There was NOTHING within walking distance at all- we were right off the highway in no mans land, lol. I ended up getting room service (ouch! not budget!)

We are also looking for a hotel in Manhattan- a friend recommended the Gershwin. It's nothing fancy (at all) but budget priced and (she says anyway!) decent.

We drove down and stayed at the Marriott Courtyard in Jersey City. The hotel was right next to the train station that took you in and dropped you off near Herald Square. There was also all types of facilities plus a mall right near the hotel because it was in the middle of a bunch of condos. A few blocks over there was a nice park right on the river where you would walk and enjoy the NYC skyline. If we go back in the summer I think we'll stay there again because the hotel prices in the summer aren't affordable in the city.

Try looking in Harmon Meadows near Secaucus - there are hotels, restaurants and buses for easy access to the city. Have fun!

We used to live in one of the apartment buildings between this hotel and the river. I would agree that it has convenient transportation to and from NYC and is an area you should feel safe coming back to at night.

As for driving--be sure to figure in your parking for wherever you stay. Hotels in Manhattan will charge a pretty hefty nightly rate for parking.

Not sure who is in your party and what you are comfortable with. I have heard the Pod hotel is really nice, "pod" is what you get http://www.thepodhotel.com/index.php

I've stayed at the Big Apple Hostel a number of times. $40 for a bed in a shared room with three other people. It is just 1/2 block from Times Square.

I have stayed at the Marriott in Lyndhurst , NJ. Nice hotel with bus out front to NYC. Large room able to accomodate 6 ppl around $120 with tax.

If you stay in Harmon Meadow you can also take the train out of Secaucus Junction into Penn Station. It's a quick 10 minute train ride!
