Budget hotel in NYC???

Why would you use a car service when you can hop on the subway?

Staying in Jersey City can save you a lot of money.

Lots of people wouldn't want to schlep to NJ via bus/subway/train (I think that's the order) with luggage. The hotels in that area of Jersey City are lovely (live 10 miles away, half of my family is from Jersey City, lots of my friends, attended graduate school in Jersey City, and I understand the close commute to NYC).

However, when I plug in the OP's dates, I don't get a low rate. Maybe you know of a site where they are much lower for those dates?

Personally, if the cost is the same, I'd rather stay at a small simple hotel in NYC than a nicer hotel in NJ. Maybe it's because I can be in the city within 20 minutes, so being able to step outside my hotel and be in the thick of things sounds great.

OP here, thanks for all of the additional info. It looks like, for out dates, I can find a much better deal in Queens/LIC than Jersey City. I have a cousin who lives in Midtown East, and he said that the hotel I booked is practically across the street from a station, and it is less than a 5 min ride to his apartment. So, I'm really good with that. I will continue to look for an extraordinary deal in Manhattan, but it doesn't sound like we will be missing too much if we aren't able to say in the city. I had convinced myself to increase the budget, but with the kids, we aren't going to be out late anyway, so it'll be ok. I will especially be checking that holiday inn link closer to the dates, but I can't do a non-refundable room right now. DH's work has been known to cancel people's vacations at the last minute! But, I will switch to manhattan if we can get something $200-225!
Thanks again, y'all have made me feel comfortable about being out of the city and given me lots of possibilities on how we can possibly get into it!

I've stayed at NYC Hilton properties, but neither of those. So, they may not be big enough for you, but they might be. A friend of mine just stayed at that Hampton and I'd be happy to ask her about room size if you would like. Those two codes are for the Hilton MVP program and require only that you have a Hilton Honors number.

They had 3 people, so I assumed they had a 2 Double room, but it turns out they just did a 1 King room and then brought an air mattress too! She said they had a full-size air mattress and it was really tight. So, if the rooms are the same size, I would say you'd be pushing it. But, if the 2-bed rooms are a little bigger than the 1-bed rooms, you may be in luck. I just checked the website and the square footage isn't listed like sometimes it is for hotel rooms. You might try calling the hotel to see if they can give you the size.

I will call and see, thanks. I'm fine with it being tight at night as long as it will actually fit. We can move it or deflate it during the day. Thanks so much for the extra info!
