We have a neighborhood block party tomorrow, and there will be a cocktail contest. I would love to have a fun drink that doesn't break the bank and can stand up to being out in the heat for a bit! Lots of the recipes I'm finding have so many different kinds of alcohol they will end up costing a fortune. Does anyone have a delicious, relatively inexpensive cocktail recipe? I'm not a big drinker so I'm having a hard time coming up with something.
Thanks!

Fine cooking magazine had a strawberry soda recipe that sounded yummy. Here's the recipe:

Simmer 2 cups of sugar, 1 cup of water and a dozen sliced strawberries until the strawberries break down (about 10 minutes). Strain syrup and cool.Add a tablespoon or two of the syrup to a glass and top with cold selzer water. For an adult kick add vodka.

I would put them in martini glasses. You could rim the glasses in coarse sugar and garnish with a strawberry

White wine sangria?
For every bottle of wine (you can use 2 buck chuck from trader joe's, I always use boxed franzia), add in 1/3 of white sugar and around a cup of peach schnapps. Add in frozen fruit to taste.

It's perfect weather for sangria.

Cheap cheap cheap red wine plus a bottle of cranberry grape or cran pomegranite cocktail plus tons of cut up fruit- citrus (lemon, orange, lime), apples, berries, and if you want sweet- stir in some 7-up just before serving- if you like less sweet- do club soda just before serving. You can freeze the fruit to keep it chilled or add ice- it'll dilute a bit as the ice melts though. You end up with about a gallon of the stuff for under $10.

I like white sangria too but it's more $$. You use peaches and raspberries as the fruit- combined w/ a cheap white wine (chardonnay or pinot grigio), add a quart of peach nectar and a bottle of either club soda or 7-up and add the fruit. Yummy!

Thank you all! I actually have several bottles of red wine (recently had a party where people brought it and I'm not a red wine drinker), so the sangria recipes will be perfect!

One of my favorites tht everyone seems to like is a Malibu Baybreeze. It is just cranberry juice, pineapple juice and Malibu (coconut) rum.

Have a great time!

My Favorite Sangria Recipe:

1 Bottle Mesta Tempranillo (inexpensive red wine that is perfect for sangria)
4 shots Grand Marnier
6 cherries, sliced
2 oranges, segmented
1 lemon, quartered
1 lime, quartered

But, if you aren't set on sangria, I would go with a berry mojito.

(for two mojitos -- I used to have it multiplied out for a pitcher, but lost it)

2 stalks of mint
1 shot glass of white sugar
1 shot glass of fresh lime juice
2 shots Bacardi Silver Rum
6 shots of Club Soda
Blueberries or Raspberries

Muddle mint and sugar well in a large shaker, add other ingredients besides berries. Add berries to bottom of serving glasses and muddle slightly. Add ice and then strain mojito into glasses.

Thanks for all the ideas - we'll be having many pool parties this summer so we'll have a chance to try a variety!

Soak the fruit tonight in the red wine for the Sangria. I find the longer I soak the fruit the better.

And for taste and budget I always use frozen berries. It can totally be done with out any extra liquor, but I find triple sec gives a nice unexpected twist.

We make ginger mojitos that are sweet and not too pricey (if you already have some peppermint extract around).

I don't like leaves in my drink, so its rum, a two liter bottle of ginger ale and just a drop or two of peppermint extract.
